Preparing your dog for colder temperatures during the winter months is essential and includes gradually acclimating them to the freezing weather, ensuring they have a warm and comfortable place to rest. Some dogs may also need clothing and accessories to keep them toasty warm 🥰

Various factors can affect your dog’s cold tolerance:

🐶 Dog breed

🐶 Size

🐶 Age

🐶 Coat thickness

Our temperature guide can be used as a useful tool to help decide whether it is safe to take your dog for a walk or to let them play outside during the remaining winter months. 🐾

Sometimes owners believe it is best to not groom their pet in the winter months so they "will be warmer". However, not grooming your pet in the winter can have the opposite effect.

Pets with coats that are groomed on a regular schedule, should be kept on schedule throughout the year. Every spring we see it in our salons. Dogs who are on a regular grooming schedule, but haven't been in for months simply because it's cold outside. The coat is matted and/or pelted and the poor pet gets shaved to the skin. Owners are upset because they don't understand that a blade must pass 'under' matting, it cannot go through it. Sometimes there are injuries or skin infections discovered underneath all that mess which leads to veterinary visits.

Keeping fur bearing breeds groomed means excessive undercoat does not build up allowing the coat to do it's job. The guard coat reflects wetness and cold, while the undercoat holds warm air near the skin.

For hair bearing breeds, it's okay to groom a bit longer for winter warmth, but dead undercoat still needs to be removed. However, 1/2 inch of extra coat keeps your pet no warmer. You will need extra inches if you are growing for warmth and that may mean more frequent grooming to prevent matting.

Is winter grooming really necessary? Absolutely it is!

Thousands of dogs served during the First World War; as scouts, as messengers with military orders pinned to their collars, and as searchers for wounded soldiers. Many were killed in service, and today we remember their sacrifice, as well as the sacrifice of the men and women they served alongside.

As our dogs get older, they need a little extra TLC—and dental care is a huge part of that! Just like us, they can face dental issues that lead to pain, infections, and even impact their overall health. Here’s why keeping on top of your senior dog’s teeth is so important:

✨ Dental problems like loose teeth and gum disease can make eating really painful, which might lead to weight loss and nutrition issues. Healthy teeth mean mealtimes are a joy, not a struggle!

✨ Did you know that bacteria from dental infections can spread to vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys? Regular dental care can help prevent these serious issues and keep your senior dog thriving.

✨ Let’s be honest—bad breath in older dogs is often a sign of dental disease that’s been ignored. A clean mouth means fresher breath and a happier, more comfortable dog!

✨ Keeping their teeth and gums in check means your dog can enjoy their golden years feeling comfortable and content. Every little step—like brushing and regular vet visits—helps them live their best life. ❤️

Senior dogs deserve all the love and care we can give them, one brush at a time. 🐶

SHOULD I HAVE MY DOG GROOMED IN WINTER?

A common misconception is that we should leave our dog’s coat longer in winter as they will feel the cold, when in actual fact, the opposite is often the case.

When a dog’s coat is left long, unless you groom it meticulously on a daily basis and dry it after walks, it will retain the cold and damp and actually make your dog colder.

A coat which is left long in the winter is likely to become matted as it will constantly be getting wet and a damp coat is difficult to maintain, unless you wash and dry the coat after every walk which is very high maintenance.

Keeping your dog’s coat shortish and manageable in the winter will be much easier to keep clean and dry and will be much more comfortable for your dog, allowing air to circulate through the coat and avoiding a long, matted, damp coat sitting against your dog’s skin.

Most dogs live in our homes with us which are centrally heated and warm. If it is extremely cold, you can put a coat on your dog on walks and remove it at home when they are in the warm.
