Hi All,

We have a very nice juvenile rescue Cockerel looking for a forever home. He was reported to us on Wednesday that he had been dumped in a closed cardboard box in Tendring so we brought him back and are looking after him.

He seems to be young (no spurs at all and his crow is a bit wobbly!) and is calm, friendly when we are in his run with him and on seeing our other chickens through the mesh.

He’s a stunning boy, no injuries at all and no apparent health issues - we just don’t have space for a fifth Cockerel ourselves sadly.

If you are interested please dm us and include a photo of your set up eg run and coop as we would like to find him his long term home.

Today our Harwich Collection Point is open and we have these lovely Warren Hens waiting to meet their new families and go to their forever homes to enjoy their retirements!

They have travelled today from Reading area so have had a busy day already!

New mandatory registration requirements are to be implemented for bird keepers in Great Britain.

Under these rules, all bird owners are required to register their birds annually 🦆
This will help manage potential disease outbreaks like and keep your flock healthy 💚

By registering, owners will receive crucial updates and guidance for bird care.

Keepers need to follow these new requirements by 1 October 2024 📆

At Chicken Rescue U.K. - Harwich we are celebrating our rescue girls with our Employees of the Month!

This month we have our main flock, in Cluckingham Palace, to thank for their hard work in digging 1ft deep holes for dust bathing, laying eggs in random places for us to hunt for and chatting to us while we clean them out each day!

Hard working hens indeed - and their cockerel Stan Lee will feature another time 🙂

For our lovely rehomers - if you are new to chicken keeping and see your ladies do this, it's quite normal for us to initially have a panic but they are dust bathing and enjoying the sun!

They will dig holes in soil, sand etc as it's cooler plus they throw it over themselves and sift through their feathers to help with insect control! Clever!

Then they lay on their side with wings outstretched to both sun bath and give us a heart attack at the same time!!

We'd love to see your ladies enjoying the sun!

Due to 'chicken maths' we have just received a number of hens tonight from this weekend's farm collection! 🐓🐓🐓

We now have 51 Lohmann Brown hens looking for new homes at Chicken Rescue UK Harwich location who are ready for new homes from today (pending usual checks via website etc)

Lohmann Brown hens are incredibly friendly, calm and inquisitive ladies who lay very regularly! These hens come from a Free Range Farm so have been used to roaming outside and are in wonderful condition; most are fully feathered, continuing to lay and enjoy us going in to see them - they are all very chatty!!

These hens will settle into your existing flock very easily and we are here to offer advise too 🐓

Evening all

After a very long but successful day Saturday with our rehoming event, we currently still have 22 Lohmann Brown hens looking for a new home.

These girls are already settling in fast - most are fully feathered, they are clean, chatty and inquisitive! They have gone from a farm where they could free range and are very interested in everything we are doing!

Lohmann Brown hens are known for being super friendly, making wonderful pets, plus are very good egg layers for some time after their commercial days.

This is Harwich collection point's last rehoming of this year, the next rehoming event locally will be Ipswich.

We are looking for loving forever homes for every one of these girls, as they are so very special and can make just as much of a difference to your lives after 18 months of hard work as you would be giving to them!

Lohmann Brown Hens are incredibly friendly, calm and accept handling very quickly even after rehoming from their working lives; they will appreciate a little time to settle in but compared to many ex commercial hens are curious and keen to come and see what you're doing much sooner.

They make wonderful pets due to their calm and inquisitive nature plus during their laying ages tend to lay readily throughout most of the year. Do of course bear in mind they won't lay forever and have already been ultra busy with egg production!

Plus in more news we have a new collection point in Ipswich!! This will be the first rescue for them on 9th September so let's welcome them to Chicken Rescue U.K.!

🦆🦆 We have some exciting news 🦆🦆

We have Ducks coming to us for our August rehoming event!

Edit: ALL Ducks have been reserved now!!

On Sunday 20th August 2023 Chicken Rescue UK will have around 550 Ducks looking for a new home across the UK and we will be providing our rehoming venue in the Harwich area.

Below is information on the breed of Duck for this date:

The French Star Duck (CT5 duck) is a heavy weighted bird with a large stature and a prolific layer with around 296 eggs per season (The eggs are very large and approximately 88g each with a strong white shell).

The French Star Duck has a strong constitution, very large in size (Bred from Large German Pekins), the duck is a dense build and requires a lot of area to walk and exercise, with access to a pond or pool which they can access and exit easily as they don’t climb or jump well due to a lot of muscle mass, with an average weight of 3.5 kg. The plumage of Star Bird duck is pure white. If you get ducklings, then their survival rate is 96% but high ratio male dominant.

Lohmann Brown hens:

🐓 Extremely friendly, making them a brilliant first time chicken owner breed type!

🐓 They settle into new places quickly compared to other types of hens

🐓 Enjoy being stroked and handled before very long - some chicken types never enjoy being handled!

🐓 They have a striking brown/red feather colouring

🐓 Can settle into an existing flock quite fast - especially when given some space to check things out!

Dog training for Essex & Suffolk is a company that we work closely with and help us with transportation for some Chicken Rescues.

We are hosting K9 Gait Massage for a 4 hour Massage Workshop, being delivered on two different days on 26th and 27th May

So yesterday saw a small rescue turn in to a big one with a lot more hens then planned. The ones that we were not able to take, are going to the farmers retirement flock.
This farmer is the best he also keeps the cockerels that hatch to keep his line of birds in house.
I know we have a waiting list for hens as soon as I get the list I will be contacting rehomers as I have over 40 hens waiting for homes.
The hens I have got are Leghorns White hens that lay white eggs 🥚

Thank you for all your help we have now found a loving home for all 10 so they can stay together.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had 10 hens come back to us from the last rescue event.

We would love to keep them together in their next home if we can to help them settle quicker.

We are happy to wait for the right home to come up for them and they are enjoying being in our ‘foster’ enclosure for the time being.

All hens from the farm on Saturday have been rescued, thanks to all of you and some very good team work by CRU Admin team and Farm team.

Saturday saw us with 60 hens arriving with only 35 booked for their forever homes. But you are the best : because you are so caring we found homes for 52 hens leaving 8 looking for their home. For now they will wait here with us,being looked after until we find them a home.
