First time chicken owners! ππ
If you spot your girls doing this while the sun is out donβt panic!
They are dust bathing!
Provide some loose soil, dry mud, sand etc and they will flap about cleaning their wings and backs with the cool grains!
How happy are these new ladies in with our main flock now π₯°π₯°
Hereβs some of our lovely rescue ladies at our home :
Holly eating from my hand is one of our newest rescues and came to us last year. She previously was picked on by other hens so we nervous, hid away and didnβt eat or drink but as you can see she enjoys our company, is clearly eating well lol and all her bare patches she came with have refeathered beautifully!
We have more Rhode Island Red girls in this video plus one of our rescue Leghorn girls too β₯οΈ
They really love the sun - laying in the sun spreading out their wings to really relax, getting under the soil for a lovely dust bath (which helps clear any bugs within the feathers as well)
They also love to check what we are doing and will flock round us to see whatβs what! They use their perches to get close to us and sing to us for attention which of course results in some fusses and cuddles!!
They all took whatever time they needed at first to settle in, decompress, learn where everything is here etc and some are more confident straight away while others need a little time but they are all so great to spend time with!
Thankyou Holly and girls for this clip!!
Chickens can enjoy perches, swings, shelves etc - a nice platform in the sun can make their day!!
Enrichment for rescue and rehome chickens can be as creative as you like!
