Dogs in the mist
Dogs in the mist
Apart from being absolutely frozen to the bone today, I love this sport.
Today four dogs started their Trail Hunt International journey. 3 had done some scent work before and one of them had not done anything using his nose.
All of the dogs did so well. Some picked it up faster than others, some went out with zoom speed and others were more methodical. But all of them managed to to follow a trail by the end of the session.
I’m looking forward to workshop 2 with you Caitlin Isaac and Saxon, @vicky Challice with Remus, Julie Rust with Chester and @lorraine with Berri
👃
I love the sleepy dogs at the end
Not much fun for me or Truman but Toffee seems happy 🐕
Toffee enjoyed a bit of Trail Hunt this morning. Such a beautiful day to be out in the countryside. #lovewhereyoulive
I feel very lucky to be able to rent this space and I’m really looking forward to lots more trail fun and introducing loads of dogs to Trail Hunt.
You don’t need a specific breed or a sport dog to do this. All dogs love it. 🥰
Puppies
With many sports puppies have to wait to be 1yr old due to the strain of their joints that are not yet fully formed. As trail hunt does not involve any impact of the joints and can be tailored to the dog, puppies can start at any age. 🐶
Old dogs
They are never too old to learn this sport. This can be a great way to provide enrichment for an older dog that may not be able to walk as far. 🐕
Domestic dogs
If your dog has never tried any sports before then this is a great one to start with. 🛋️
Large breeds/Small breeds
All dogs that have a nose can give this a go 😆
No previous scent work
This is a great way to try scent work as it is planned in stages so the dogs can learn quickly without frustration. 👃
Lots of different types of scent work
It’s fine if your dog has done other scent work. We use a different odour and different cues so that the dogs will know what task is being asked of them. 👓
Who says you can’t teach old dogs new tricks? Truman will be 12 in March and he’s loving Trail Hunt International
Koda has been an ‘interesting’ dog to teach Trail Hunt International
He is very visual and prefers to see where the pod is rather than use his nose. 👃
We have been hiding the pod so he can’t see it. This worked up to a point but as he worked through the stages gaining more distance he was just searching for the odour cloud around the pod rather than following the trail.
So today we thought we would make it so that he couldn’t find the cloud around the pod without following the trail. 🥳 he got it!!!!!!!
Look at this lovely video of him really concentrating and following the odour. Clever boy Koda 👏

Trail hunt international
Koda and Kay-Dash McCoy are being my case studies to help me get my Trail Hunt International qualification.
Koda is a very visual dog so we have had to take away all the visual markers of where the odour is and find long grass to hide it in. 👀
Koda really got it today. Just look at the turn where he realises what to do and where the odour is 👏 👃
New scent
Toffees first time with a new scent tonight. She didn’t take long to get the hang of it clever girl.
