Rescue, Rehabilitation, Assisting Lost and found, and Home-to-Home assistance of Stray, Surrendered and Abandoned Cats and Kittens, covering Tendring, Essex.

All of the Cats and Kittens on our Home page are in need of a new forever home! We also have many other cats in our care at any given time, not quite yet ready for adoption. Paws & Mittens is a small, self-funded rescue that helps to rehome and rescue Cats and Kittens. This happens either through foster care here with us in our "Kitty-Haven" and "Kitty-Nursery", with our volunteer Foster Mums, or

home to home adoptions. We rely solely on donations to help keep our rescue operating and to provide the food, litter and Vet care for all our cats. Donations of food, Wood-Based litter, toys, Kitchen Towel, Blankets, Cleaning Products and Pet Carriers are always welcomed

*** Shanti ***

Home to home adoption

Darling Shanti is approx 7.5 years old.

Shes a long haired fluffy Panther!

Shanti first came to the attention of Paws back in 2019 when found as a long term stray and was quickly adopted by her doting "feeder" who has loved and cherished her since.

Sadly, Shanti's Mum has now had to go into residential care and Shanti is home alone aside from twice daily visits from friends / neighbours 😞

Shanti is a funny girlie, shes not a cat who would tolerate young children, any children, any other cats or dogs and not being picked up to be smooched and cuddled.... BUT she loves company ❤

She will happily sit next to her Mum on the sofa and watch TV all day and then follow her to sleep on the bed.

She will tolerate a brush and likes the occassional play.

Shes super cat perfect for a company companion for an older person or couple who would like a cat about the house to talk to and snuggle up with on the sofa of an evening.

Shanti does like outside access and can use a catflap. She would need a home away from any busy main roads or train tracks, or an indoor home only if lots of attention and people home.

She can use her litter tray.

Shes is spayed, microchipped, vet checked, and up to date on flea and worm treatments.

Shanti is currently in her home in Harwich, Essex

*** " Sir Fluff" - Shave number 2! ***

Oh, our darling boy, who came into care well over a year ago, hes been in rehab ever since....

Initially, not neutered, chipped, he was blood tested positive for FIV, we knew he was going to stay...

A year ago, he was snipped, chipped, and had a full "lion" cut as his fur was so so matted, and being feral, he would not let me close.

A year on, the last few months, we have made HUGE progress, he will sit on my lap and accept a brush for a minute, two at the most! :)

But sadly, after well over a yea, trying gaining his trust and after his 2 x dentals, he couldnt look after his new coat and it got so sore for him again :(

So today, off he went to the vets to sedate and make him feel so much better..

And already, now hes home, hes a different cat, on my lap purring..

Sir Fluff, PLEASE be a brave boy now and let me brush you, we have to avoid shave number 3!

Heating in the house is on full blast, hes so many blankets to snuggle up to!

It will soon grow back, but going by his head bops and purrs this evening , he is feeling better.

*** Wishing all our supporters, foster Mums and Dads and adoptive Mum & Dads, a VERY Happy Christmas and all the best for a fun filled, love filled, and prosperous New year! ***

We have had a quiet year with so many long term kittys in care waiting for their new homes, including the adorable Buster and Gaston 😞

And many who will be ready early in the New year also looking for new homes.

Not forgetting the "Brady Bunch" of forever fosters of course!

We had the most saddest of news this month, I lost my darling Megan (originally a Paws rescue at weeks old) at the age of 11 a few weeks back, through a very aggressive and quick cancer diagnosis, and just 19 days later, we lost our beautiful forever foster Chigley in a Road Accident 😞 - My beautiful babies, lost too young and so soon together.

It highlights the importance to reflect how much each and everyone of our furr babies means to us. How special they are, and how special you are for loving them.

Thank you, so much, for your on-going support, in 12 years, we have helped well over 1000 cats ( along with a few Dogs, Hedgehogs, rabbits and the odd Tortoise!) I couldn't do it without you,

*** Gomez update ***

After seeing and helping with a dog running loose in the street today...

The owner was distressed, shouting, chasing.. it doesn't work!

So many loose dogs of late, be it your dog or someone else's, I shouted this advice "Stop! and sit down!"

The owner was too upset to listen, a beautiful stranger DID sit down and low and behold the dog went to her ans she grabbed the collar.

If you are trying to contain YOUR dog, or even a strangers dog, as long as you feel safe to do so..... STOP, DROP and WAIT.... they will come to you. Nosey buggers! ;) x - NEVER Chase, it becomes a game for the dog.

*** Rufus ***

Rufus is a darling, middle aged boy, now 7 years old, who first came into care at Paws at just 7 weeks old.. (yes, hes grown!)

Rufus was homed to a wonderful family, who adore him and have done so the last 7 years, but a sad and tragic event in the last few years meant that Rufus had to integrate into a new feline family, alongside his existing one.

In his previous "gang" he was always a bit of a "Billy Bully", but in the new family home, hes gotten worse with the resident cats, so very sadly.

His human family adore him, always have done, and adore the rest of the group to, and having spent a good few years trying every "trick" in the book, including vet check, medications, plug ins, herbal sprays, feline Psychologists in etc and beyond... Rufus is not a happy boy and neither are his Feline friends.

Rufus, with people he knows, is a HUGE snug bug! He loves adults, people and loves nothing more than a snuggle up from 6pm on the sofa for a chin tickle, a lap to sit on and someone to "talk to" (hes a people cat, not a cats cat)

Is he snuggly enough we would suggest he would be homed with young children?.. No. Hes a gorgeous boy and loving, but has his independence about him and certainly would not tolerate being popped in a push chair! 🙂

Rufus is a HUGE big boy, full of love.

Hes fully litter trained but does like to go outside and toilet outside (though he doesn't venture beyond the garden usually)

Rufus needs to be the only cat.

Rufus has not been dog tested and therefore we would suggest no dogs in the home (consideration may be given for a very old, cat friendly, placid dog)

No young children please, under the age of 10 ish.

Rufus is:

Neutered
Micro-chipped
Vaccinated
Fully up to date on Flea and Worm treatments
Litter trained

Medical needs:

Rufus is vet checked on a regular basis, his only medical need is that he is partially deaf. He can't hear low level noises but can hear loud noises.

If you have a home, that you feel may be suitable for Rufus, away from any busy main roads, or train tracks, please do MESSAGE us and tell us more about the home and family you could offer this gorgeous boy.

Home check applies and an minimum adoption donation of £60 would be kindly requested.

Rufus is currently in his home in Maningtree, Essex.

*** Gomez ***

An exciting update for dear Gomez, who came into care 5 months ago. A stray, not neutered, not chipped, full of mats and a bit shy, approx 6 years old 😞

We had him chipped, snipped, full shave to rid of his matts, vet checked and blood tested, which sadly showed he was FIV Positive (not uncommon in older not done cats, especially Males)

Not a death sentence, by no means, but usual re-homing procedure by a rescue for FIV+ is Indoor only and no other cats.... (to reduce the risk of spreading FIV+ if they fight - it can only be spread from deep bite wounds and mating)

Gomez had a bit of a dodgy hairdo at the vets lol bless him! And lots of it, is not growing back.... what with this and his need to be indoor only and the only cat, we had NO interest in him what so ever 😞

BUT, in those 5 months, in a pen next to our forever fosters, who are in at night, but out in the day, who all have been through the mill and stayed with us for one reason or another, he started to make friends, and REALLY Really try to get though to their pens to say hello, and was sniffing the fresh air he has been so used to for all his years on the streets.

Not a decision we took lightly, but for his well being and sanity, he joined the forever fosters, under very careful supervision and us looking on, very closely.

Hes loves them! and they love him! No fighting, no biting, just playing and none of them leave the garden at all.

He loves to be outside in the sun and long grass, he loves to be with his pals, he comes in every night to sleep and will not toilet outside, but comes into use his tray...

We couldn't now condemn Gomez to an indoor only life, with no furry friends, it would be cruel.

So, how hes settled, how he is, yes; hes joined the "forever foster" crew here at Paws ❤

We are delighted to welcome him and hes more than happy here, and his new furry friends love him very much too.

*** New Arrivals ***

Despite being full, and sadly turning away calls for help daily, over the weekend, one of our beautiful "had retired" Foster Mummy's answered a very urgent plea from a local vet.

Meet Mumma cat and her 5 x 2 week old babies.
They had been left in a carrier at the vets door just after closing on Saturday.

PLEASE NOTE This post is NOT to Judge those who left her and the babies, and we would appreciate no nasty comments.
We understand a lot of people are really struggling just now, and asking for help, and all the rescues are full. Thankfully they were not "just released" in a wood etc or left somewhere relatively more unsafe.

Mummy looks very young herself and looked after, babies are very young but all look well.

Of course, super early days as yet, but we will be working with the feline family over the coming months to ensure they are all fit and well, and when ready, Spayed and Neutered, Micro-chipped etc etc.

Of course, we are not at any point ready as yet to be looking for homes for Mum or Babies, so please no enquiries. They will be posted when ready with full details of their needs, characters, bonds with siblings etc.

Just the first 24 hours bill of flea, wormer, panacur, litter, good food for Mum etc is £200, and the spay , neuters, chips, food, litter, flea, worming, and ongoing vet checks etc we know, for 6 will exceed at least £2000 absolute minimum.

Some of the cats in our care take weeks, months and sometimes Years to be ready to re-home and, eventually, trust us.

Time is NEVER a factor for Paws and Mittens.

Each cat / kitten / senior, has their own demons to work on and our foster Mums are there for them, for as long as it takes.

Yes! At last! :)

Of course, ALL cats adopted Via Paws are Microchipped. If you have adopted from Paws, and have moved since adoption or would like reassurance of registration etc, do please message us!

If you have a cat, not from Paws and not chipped, please contact your local vets ASAP to arrange chipping.

Its a very very quick and painless procedure and could really help you, and your cat, if they ever got into a pickle and helps rescues and vets so much to quickly identify cats and their owners when needed.

Happy 6th Birthday to my beautiful forever fosters, Trumpton & Chigley 💕🐾💕

They came in to care just short of 6 years ago, as tiny spiky Ferals with their mumma. After years of rehab, they have been forever here since, as my beautiful boys and then playing “uncle “ and “friend” to so many rescues in care.

Beautiful Bray / Now Freddie, was adopted by his beautiful family nearly 3 years ago, but they always keep in touch! This video just sent, did make us chuckle and smile :) 🤣 Video sent with the simple caption "he ate it!" <3 Gorgeous Freddie!

To beautiful not to share... Has Covid meant you need to work from home? Has your adopted Pal not left your side? But disrupting your work? Bray, who came into care approx 18 months ago and adopted soon after, shows us here how working from home with his Daddy can work for both of them... ❤ If he's not a spoilt monkey, then I don't know who is! 😉 ❤ * Bray came into care after a midnight panic call from the member of the public who had seen a cat hit THREE times in front of them, lying in the road. Assumed Dead. As they picked him up, he looked at them. He was rushed to emergency vets. A sheer miracle saw Bray with NO wounds what so ever! No chip, not neutered and despite all attempts to find an owner, no one came forward. Matt and Samantha adopted Bray, Now Freddie, many weeks later (after chip, snip, FIV tests etc) and now over a year ago, and he could not be more cherished <3
