Do you know the story of Harvey Smith’s SECOND Derby v-sign? In 1981, the Yorkshireman picked up his fourth win in the class, this time courtesy of catch ride Sanyo Video. When the pair produced the only clear round, Harvey dropped his reins and gave a double v-sign, much to the delight of the crowd.

We were greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Tricia Mitchell, the lady responsible for making the famous Derby oak garland for 53 years! She is pictured receiving a special award from Lizzie Bunn on her retirement in 2015 alongside her daughter, Helen, who thankfully took up the reins. Tricia loved coming to Hickstead and being part of the history, and we are grateful that she passed on her special skills so that her legacy will continue with every new Derby winner!

All week we've been counting down some of the epic wins from the 2024 season, and we had to finish with this incredible round by William Funnell and Dublon, winners of the Al Shira'aa Derby. In the jump-off, William gave a masterclass of how to ride the Derby course, leaving every fence standing but going quick enough to put the pressure on the last rider to go. Their win back in June made William the first rider ever to win with Hickstead Derby five times.

Many congratulations to Darragh Kenny, a very worthy World Cup winner at The London International Horse Show!

Interestingly, three of the members of this year’s winning team at the Agria Nations Cup of Great Britain took the next three places in today’s World Cup leg, with Ben Maher, Robert Whitaker Equestrian and Tim Gredley taking second, third and fourth place respectively.

Congratulations to William Funnell, for winning the 'Moment of the Year' at the British Equestrian Media Association Awards. William received the award for his spectacular record fifth win in this summer's Al Shira'aa Derby, riding Dublon.
