๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ Choosing the Right Dog Breed: Itโ€™s About Lifestyle, Not Looksโ€ฆ

๐Ÿฉ A very common question on social media is โ€œAnyone selling any puppies?โ€ This means that these potential owners are buying any cute puppy breed on impulse and not researching throughly into a breed that fits their lifestyle!

๐Ÿฆฎ When choosing a dog, itโ€™s easy to be drawn in by their adorable faces, unique markings, or trendy status. But remember: a dog isnโ€™t an accessory. Theyโ€™re living beings with specific needs, instincts, and energy levels shaped by their breed.

๐Ÿ• Picking a dog based on appearance alone often leads to mismatched expectations. High-energy working breeds like Border Collies, Malinois or Cockapoos look stunning but require daily mental and physical stimulation. On the flip side, breeds like Bulldogs may seem low-maintenance but can come with health issues that demand attention and resources.

๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ As trainers and behaviourists, we see the fallout when people bring home dogs that donโ€™t fit their lifestyle. Dogs become bored, anxious, or destructive when their needs arenโ€™t met. Owners become overwhelmed, and relationships break down. Itโ€™s heartbreakingโ€”for everyone involved.

๐Ÿฉ Before choosing a breed, research their energy levels, grooming needs, temperament, and potential health concerns. Think about your daily routine, your space, and your ability to meet their needs. The best dog for you is one that aligns with your lifestyle, not just one that looks cute in photos.

๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ Choosing the right dog means fewer frustrations, happier pets, and a stronger bond. Letโ€™s set dogs up for successโ€”by putting their well-being first.

๐Ÿ“ข Why Are So Many Dogs Going Missing? ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿฉ Lately, thereโ€™s been a noticeable increase in missing dogs, and itโ€™s heartbreaking to see so many families searching for their beloved pets. Hereโ€™s why this might be happening and how we can help prevent it:

1๏ธโƒฃ Escaping from Unsecured Areas: Dogs are curious by nature and can slip out of open gates, damaged fences, or even dig their way out of back gardens.

2๏ธโƒฃ Loud Noises or Scary Events: Thunderstorms, fireworks, or unexpected loud sounds can spook dogs, causing them to run away in fear.

3๏ธโƒฃ Accidental Loss: Walks without a secure lead or a correctly fitted collar/harness that they canโ€™t slip. Quick escapes through open doors can happen in the blink of an eye.

4๏ธโƒฃ Flight Risk: Dogs being let off lead that have been newly rescued or are timid/nervous, who will take flight when worried or scared.

5๏ธโƒฃ Theft Risks: Sadly, some dogs are targeted due to their breed or appearance.

๐Ÿ†˜ How You Can Help Protect Your Dog:
๐Ÿ”– Collar and ID Tag: An ID tag with your contact information is the quickest way for someone to reunite you with your dog if they find them. Itโ€™s also the law for your dog to wear one.

๐Ÿ“› Microchip: Collars can fall off, but a microchip is a permanent way to identify your dog. Just make sure your contact info is up to date.

๐Ÿšช Secure Your Home and garden: Regularly check for weak spots in fences or gates.

๐Ÿ• Supervise Walks and Outdoor Time: Always keep your dog on a lead if they are potentially a flight risk and monitor them when outside.

๐Ÿ’ก A simple ID tag can make the difference between your dog finding their way home in hours versus weeksโ€”or never. Do your part to keep your dog safe and sound!

๐ŸŽ„ Are You and Your Dog Ready for Christmas? ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป The holiday season is filled with fun, family, and lots of excitement โ€“ but it can also be a little overwhelming for your new puppy or dog. Hereโ€™s how to ensure your dog feels safe and happy during all the festivities:

๐Ÿ›Œ Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy, quiet spot where your dog can retreat if the celebrations get too loud. Add their bed, favorite toys, and maybe a blanket with your scent to help them feel secure.

๐Ÿฆด Stock Up on Long-Lasting Chews: Keep your dog entertained and calm with long-lasting chews or puzzle toys. These can be lifesavers during busy moments like unwrapping presents or hosting guests.

๐ŸŽ Keep Hazards Out of Reach: Christmas decorations, chocolate, and certain festive foods can be dangerous for dogs. Make sure anything unsafe is placed well out of reach.

๐Ÿ• Plan for Walks and Playtime: With the hustle and bustle, itโ€™s easy to forget, but your dog still needs their daily exercise and attention. A good walk or play session before the festivities can help them relax.

๐Ÿ’กA little preparation goes a long way in making sure both you and your dog enjoy a stress free Christmas.

๐Ÿง Day 12โ€ฆ. The final day of challenges!

๐Ÿพ Can your dog do a โ€˜middleโ€™? This is where they come from behind you and sit in between your legsโ€ฆ this is a great little trick to teach your dogs and can also be a good position to put your dog into if they are worried about a situation out and about.

๐Ÿฅ“ Start by having a treat in both hands, lure your dog with treat in one hand, as they come around the back of you close that hand then have the other hand with treat in luring them between your legs. Donโ€™t worry about a sit at first as you just want to build confidence in them coming between your legs at first. Your goal eventually would be able to just say โ€˜middleโ€™ without luring.

๐Ÿ’ก Understanding Your Dogโ€™s Behaviour: Why They Repeat What Works!

๐Ÿฉ Dogs are incredible learners, and they quickly figure out what behaviours get them what they want. If your dog refuses to walk, and you try to bribe them by offering a treat to get them moving, youโ€™ve unknowingly taught them a lesson: refusing to walk = reward.

๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ In their mind, stopping on the walk isnโ€™t a problem, itโ€™s a strategy that works! Dogs will repeat behaviours that bring positive outcomes, so if they learn that refusing to walk leads to treats, theyโ€™re going to keep doing it.

๐Ÿฆฎ Instead of bribing, try reinforcing desired behaviours. For example:

โ€ข Praise and reward them when they start walking willingly.

โ€ข Ignore the stopping behaviour and wait it out. Once they move, praise & reward to reinforce the walking, not the stopping. Donโ€™t pull on the lead.

โ€ข Train alternative cues like โ€œletโ€™s goโ€ and reward them for following through.

โ€ข This is very common in puppies as theyโ€™re worried about the big wide worldโ€ฆ take it slow and introduce them gradually to anything new.

๐Ÿ’ก Remember, dogs thrive on consistency. By rewarding the behaviours you want and avoiding reinforcement of unwanted ones, youโ€™ll help them learn better habits. Patience and clear communication are key! ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿพ Why Puppy Training Shouldnโ€™t Stop at Basic Classes

๐ŸŽ“ Many puppy owners reach out to us for help when their dogs hit adolescence, a time when their sweet puppy suddenly seems to โ€œforgetโ€ everything theyโ€™ve learned. This stage, typically between 6-18 months, can be challenging as dogs test boundaries, develop more confidence and experience a surge of energy.

โ„น๏ธ So, why is continuing training beyond basic puppy classes so crucial?

1๏ธโƒฃ Reinforcement of Skills: Training isnโ€™t a โ€œone-and-doneโ€ task. Consistent practice helps solidify behaviours and ensure they stick as your puppy grows and faces new distractions.

2๏ธโƒฃ Navigating the Adolescent Phase: Just like teenagers, adolescent dogs go through significant developmental changes. Continued training provides structure and teaches them to focus, even when their instincts are pulling them in other directions.

3๏ธโƒฃ Building a Strong Bond: Ongoing training strengthens the relationship between you and your dog, establishing trust and clear communication.

4๏ธโƒฃ Addressing New Challenges: Adolescent dogs often develop behaviours that werenโ€™t apparent as puppies, like running off, pulling on the lead, or ignoring their once amazing recall cue. Advanced training can help address these issues before they become habits.

๐Ÿ’ก Think of training as an ongoing journey, not a one time destination. Investing time now will lead to a well-behaved, confident, and happy adult dog and a more enjoyable experience for you as an owner.

๐Ÿพ If youโ€™re struggling with your adolescent dog or want to prepare before that phase hits, weโ€™re here to help.

โœ… Contact us today to learn about continuing on from our foundation advanced classes and 1-1 training options.

๐ŸšซTOXIC CHRISTMAS FOODS FOR DOGS ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿซ CHOCOLATE ๐Ÿซ
The most common clinical signs of ingesting chocolate are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, and racing heart rate. In severe cases, symptoms can include muscle tremors, seizures, and heart failure.

๐Ÿฆด COOKED BONES ๐Ÿฆด
Be wary of feeding them cooked turkey, goose and chicken bones as they can easily splinter, causing an obstruction and possibly even piercing your dogโ€™s tummy

๐Ÿฅง CHRISTMAS CAKE, MINCE PIES & CHRISTMAS PUDDING ๐Ÿฅง
All contain dried fruits such as raisins, currants or sultanas which are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

๐ŸŒฐ MACADAMIA NUTS ๐ŸŒฐ
Even a small amount ingested can lead to vomiting, hyperthermia and muscle weakness

๐Ÿง€ BLUE CHEESE ๐Ÿง€ can cause vomiting, high temperatures, diarrhoea and even seizures.

๐Ÿง„๐Ÿง… ONIONS, LEEKS, GARLIC, CHIVES & SHALLOTS ๐Ÿง…๐Ÿง„
Can cause anaemia, look out for signs of lethargy, weakness, pale gums, fainting, reddish urine and decreased appetite.

๐Ÿพ ALCOHOL ๐Ÿพ
Can cause lethargy, respiratory depression, and dangerously low body temperature in dogs.

REMEMBER your Christmas dinner involves a large amount of dangerous foods for your dog, either through being toxic, too salty or too fatty, so please be safe when trying to include your dog on Christmas Day.

If you think your dog may have eaten something that they shouldnโ€™t or they have symptoms including sickness and diarrhoea, speak to your vet straight away.
