This is Annie 🐩
Annie came to Optivet Referrals for an assessment of a watery right eye and suspected distichiasis (where an extra row of eyelashes grow from the eyelid margin in towards the eye). Annie was diagnosed with distichiasis in all four of her eyelids as well as trichiasis (where the normal set of eyelashes grow the wrong way and touch the eye).
In Feburary, cryotherapy was performed to treat the distichiasis (hairs are frozen to destroy the hair follicles) under general anaesthesia. This targets the hair follicles with hairs in.
Later in July, entropion surgery was performed to treat the trichiasis (a procedure that permanently corrects inward turned eyelids).
Following these procedures Annie is doing much better!

The team at Optivet Referrals, Hampshire, recently attended a CPD held by John Mould on: "On Reflection- Retro-illumination in Veterinary Ophthalmic Photograph".
John is a British Veterinary Association (BVA) eye panellist - an expert veterinary ophthalmologist, who carries out 'clinical eye examinations to identify inherited and non-inherited conditions' to support positive breeding decisions.

Finishing up our week with the beautiful Maggie. 🐾🥰
In some cases, our patient's eye health cannot be saved.. Sadly, this was the case with Maggie.
Maggie was born with Dermoids. Dermoids are a misplaced area of tissue (often with hair) that can grow on the eyelid, conjunctiva or cornea. Dogs are born with the defect but sometimes it is not noticed until a few months of age. There is no known cause but there are different breeds in which it is more common including German Shepherds, French Bulldogs and Dachshunds to name a few.
These can cause irritation, corneal ulcers and if large enough, vision loss and for that reason we had to perform a bilateral enucleation, where both her eyes were surgically removed.
As you can see, this has not stopped Maggie living a normal, happy, healthy life. She now uses her wonderful sense of smell and hearing to navigate the world around her!

What to expect in an Ophthalmology consult with us!
👁 IT'S NATIONAL EYE HEALTH WEEK! 👁
Here is what you can expect from an Ophthalmology consultation here at Optivet Referrals:
• Discussion of your pet’s history – We will talk about your pet’s current and previous health concerns, medications and travel history before starting the examination.
• Observations will be made from afar – This is to assess comfort as well as symmetry of the eyes, face and how well your pet is navigating around the room.
• Perform a vision assessment and test reflexes/responses – As we can’t get our patients to read letters on the wall, we test the vision in various ways such as, how well they track objects and responses to bright lights.
• Schirmer tear test (only in dogs) – A strip is placed on the lower eye lids for one minute to assess the tear production.
• Check intraocular pressure – We use a tonometer.
• Close exam with a slit lamp – This is so we can see your pet’s eyes with magnification using a hand-held microscope.
• Administer dilation drops – To dilate the pupils so we can see the back of the eye fully – like when we go to the opticians!
• Indirect ophthalmoscopy – Using a headset and lens to assess the retina.
• Fluroscein test with a slit lamp using blue light – This allows us to check for any scratches or ulcers on the surface of the eye and to assess health of the tear film.

👁 He came to Optivet Referrals with a cataract in his right eye. Here is a short video of our team performing the surgery to remove the cataract and restore vision. We are happy to say that he is doing well post-op!

🩺 A cataract is an opacity within the lens. The lens is situated behind the pupil and helps focus images onto the retina. Early cataracts may not cause any visual problems but as they progress vision will eventually be lost. Cataracts may occur as a result of genetic disease, old age, inflammation, trauma and other problems.
🔬 Cataracts can only be removed by surgery. This is done using a process called phacoemulsification. This process breaks the lens into tiny fragments using ultrasonic energy. These fragments can then be removed from the eye. Once this has been done a synthetic lens is placed into the eye (in the majority of patients establish normal vision). Where this cannot be done the eye is still visual but long-sighted.

He was taken in recently by Phoenix Rehousing. He was rehomed due to a serious injury, which we diagnosed as a lateral condylar fracture. We repaired this fracture on Monday and we hope he makes a speedy recovery. Nugget we will all miss you.
