Meet Huxley 🐱
👁 He came to Optivet Referrals with a cataract in his right eye. Here is a short video of our team performing the surgery to remove the cataract and restore vision. We are happy to say that he is doing well post-op!

🩺 A cataract is an opacity within the lens. The lens is situated behind the pupil and helps focus images onto the retina. Early cataracts may not cause any visual problems but as they progress vision will eventually be lost. Cataracts may occur as a result of genetic disease, old age, inflammation, trauma and other problems.
🔬 Cataracts can only be removed by surgery. This is done using a process called phacoemulsification. This process breaks the lens into tiny fragments using ultrasonic energy. These fragments can then be removed from the eye. Once this has been done a synthetic lens is placed into the eye (in the majority of patients establish normal vision). Where this cannot be done the eye is still visual but long-sighted.

He was taken in recently by Phoenix Rehousing. He was rehomed due to a serious injury, which we diagnosed as a lateral condylar fracture. We repaired this fracture on Monday and we hope he makes a speedy recovery. Nugget we will all miss you.

For the month of pride, each week we hid three flags and their names around the Hospital in different places for the staff to find.
When employees found the flag they placed it on the board and then skittles would be released!

There are many reasons why your dog may need to wear a muzzle, but the most important thing is that they feel completely comfortable in doing so. There is no shame in muzzling for the right reasons, and we want to help remove the stigma. A muzzle doesn't have to be something scary, and at Optivet we can help!
Our behaviour counsellor Sam runs 'Muzzle Comfort' clinics, where she will help you and your dog become comfortable in attaching and wearing a muzzle. Sam works using positive reinforcement, allowing your dog complete control over their training. This reduces your dogs anxiety, and creates a positive association between the muzzle, the practice, and you!

"Tuppence hurt her leg on a wet soggy day in early December 2023. She just turned in a field and slipped. After an emergency vet visit (it was a Sunday), the vet told us that she had ruptured her cruciate in her leg. A visit to our vets Monday and then a referral to Optivet, who we saw two days later on the Wednesday. She had her op the same day and because she is quite anxious we picked her up that night. After four months in crate, 12 weekly hydro therapy sessions, short lead walks and physio sessions we have our Tuppy back, as you can see from the video. At her favourite place, the beach. It's a long journey but something we never hesitated about doing!
I can't thank Richard and his team enough. I had a lot of questions at the beginning to make sure we were doing the right thing. They were always helpful and nothing was too much trouble."

What if we told you the beautiful, happy black Labrador you see in this video has no eyes? It's true! Sadly, due to a birth defect we were left with no choice but to perform a bilateral enucleation (both eyes surgically removed).
This video is to raise awareness and show happy Maggie is - living a normal, healthy life. She was born without vision - so actually knows no different! We think she is amazing and we love to see her thriving.
