This morning we had Archie and co. starting out on their trail hunt journey! Very promising start, with some really hard work put in by all involved 💛 Super excited to see how far this team can go!

Our Trail Hunt International Foundations course is open for November! Spots are available!

Come join us in this new and FAST-growing scentwork sport! The Foundations course will take you through the first steps of your trail hunt journey.

This course comes with a starter kit which contains all you need to begin trail hunting both in class and at home!

The course fee is £90 and includes 4 weeks of sessions. Sessions start at 8am and go for 2 hours. At the end of the 4 weeks you will recieve your THI Foundations certificate!

Suitable for anxious, reactive, or nervous dogs. Don't be afraid to give it a try, as everything is taught at your dogs' own pace. Any questions? Ask below or shoot me a DM. See you on the trails!

If I got a new puppy tomorrow I would do everything so differently!
Experienced owners: put your best tip below.
New owners: read through and pick up some great advice from people who have been there, done that!

I'll start: make sure you get used to handling your puppy's feet, ears, and mouth; starting from the very first day they come home! You will save your dog so much stress and anxiety if they ever need medical treatment in those places in the future.

Riker turned his paw to Trail Hunt this afternoon! Conditions were perfect and he used his natural shepherd talent to absolutely smash the exercises. He will be one to watch for sure! 🧡

We had Olly in to begin his Trail Hunt journey this evening! His enthusiasm was off the CHARTS. This guy took to THI like it was second nature. I can’t wait to see him progress onto the longer trails!

In case you were wondering: Can muzzled dogs participate in Trail Hunt International?

Yes! Absolutely. It doesn’t slow them down one bit. Look forward to seeing you again Olly!

Skybound's resident trail dog Woodbine having fun with Trail Hunt yesterday evening!

Could Trail Hunt benefit your dog? Let's talk about it!

This is a dog's eye view of a 30 metre trail.
Woodbine starts out very confident. Once the initial zoomies are finished he now has to think about what he is doing. He begins to zigzag, methodically checking his environment for scent. The pod is actually off the path, so Woodbine has to stray into unfamiliar territory.
You can see him doubling back on himself as he catches a whiff of the pod! His sniffing gets more intense and more frantic as he closes in.

Success!

One of Woodbine's quirks is that he likes to crunch the scent pod in excitement, which you can hear him doing as he parades around in his glory. At the end of the video he is bouncing with happiness, because he knows I'm about to lay another trail for him!

Some of the benefits that I've noticed now that we've been trail hunting together a good while.

When it comes to rewarding our dogs in scentwork, both toys and treats have their perks and pitfalls. Let's break it down:

Toy Rewards!
⭐ Keeps dogs engaged for longer periods, and with no calorie intake.

⭐ Great for high-energy dogs who love to play and engage with the handler.

⛔ Can put a dog into a state of over-arousal leading to mistakes and disinterest in the task.

⛔ Reward delivery can be tricker. Creative thinking is required to use a toy as a primary reward.

Food Rewards!
⭐ Quick and easy to deliver during training.

⭐ Provides immediate gratification, reinforcing behavior instantly when used as a primary reward.

A method of proofing the freeze indication that’s worked pretty well for us! ⭐️ At first the sudden release in line tension should coincide with your marker word.
