Did you know?
The deadline for the legal requirement for cat owners to have their cats microchipped is fast approaching.
From the 10th June 2024 your cats will need to be microchipped or you may face a fine of £500.

“Microchipping is by far the most effective and quickest way of identifying lost pets. As we’ve seen with dog microchipping, those who are microchipped are more than twice as likely to be reunited with their owner." Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss

Its great to see Scarlet back to her usual bouncy self.
So hard to believe that she is now 13yrs old and more spritely than some of the younger dogs we walk, although she does need to be reminded to slow down.

A land mark study published in 2022 in the Journal of Neuroscience, showed that a dogs sense of smell is linked to their eyesight, adding evidence to the theory that dogs see the world through scent.

So next time your dog stops for a sniff give them time to take in the view.

Do you know the phrase " It takes a village to raise a child"?

Degus know this instinctively.
Degu are a small rodents related to Chinchillas who live in large social groups. They are intelligent social creatures, so if you have or are thinking of homeing a Degu, give them lots to do and a few mates to live with, a solitary Degu is a lonely Degu.

Did you know?

A tortoise's gender is determined by the weather!
When the mother lays her eggs the gender within is not set. If the weather is cold more males are hatched, if it is hot more females are hatched.
Similarly, the weather also influences the color of a tortoise’s shell. Typically, tortoises that live in hot, sunny climates tend to have lighter-colored shells. Meanwhile, tortoises that live in colder, darker climates usually have darker-coloured shells.

A picture from the 5th September 2022, welcoming Jess to the family.

Jessie is a beautiful soul inside and out, she can be shy and doesn't really want to interact with other dogs on her walks. She is amazingly intelligent and loves to stop and take in her surroundings, before putting her head down and sniffing out them rabbits.

Did you know?
Dogs are crepuscular, meaning they tend to be most active at dawn and twilight.
Human eyes have loads of cones that help us see different colours and work best in bright daylight, dogs' eyes however, contain more of the light-detecting cells known as rods. Rods distinguish between dark and light and therefore are at their best in low-light conditions, which is ideal for a spot of hunting.
You can accommodate their crepuscular habits in several ways;
You can adjust your walk times to early morning and nearer to sunset.
You could split their meal times to when they would naturally feel hungrier, half in the morning and half in the evening.
And you can allow them to patrol your garden at these times to accommodate their desire to establish their territory.

YAY! Scarlets back and fitting fit, and with out fail she produces a classic photo opportunity.
Thankfully this ear malfunction is perfectly normal, unlike the past couple of weeks. She has made a good recovery from a bad ear infection that upset her balance. You really wouldn't believe this trooper is 13 next month.
