Some of our followers will probably have heard about the wonderful Honey. Honey was the victim of a dog attack over the summer and was rushed into us by some kind passers by who stopped to help Honey's owner. On arrival both Honey and her owner were in shock so her owner was left with our reception team for some TLC while Honey was rushed through to vet Cat. It was obvious instantly that Honey's wounds were serious as one of her front legs had been torn off by the attacking dog. Honey had lost a lot of blood and was obviously in a lot of pain. Vet Cat managed to stabilise Honey and then performed emergency surgery to clean up the wound and perform a surgical amputation of what remained of her leg. Poor Honey spent the evening at CVETS and came back to us the following morning for continued care. We were all astonished to see how well she had adapted already, coping well with the wound and managing easily on 3 legs.
Unfortunately this wasn't the end of the story for Honey. Dog bite wounds can get horribly infected and despite antibiotics this was the case for her. Part of her wound broke down and one of the bacteria we grew from Honey's wound was something most of the vets hadn't even seen before! Vet Cat performed a second surgery to debride some infected tissue and clean in up, she had some new antibiotics and regular wound care at the surgery for a few weeks. The nurses used a combination of flushing the wound, special dressings and also Manuka honey to clean it and help control the infection. This was a lot to go through for both Honey and her owner and they both coped brilliantly with the trauma. Honey never stopped wagging her tail!
We'd like to give our Bravery Award of 2024 to Honey and her wonderful owner as it was so stressful for both of them. Honey has truly captured all our hearts here at Hayle Vets and we love seeing her in for her checkups. Well done Honey 🩷

Say hi to Sydney 👋🏼
Anyone who has ever owned a dog will know that they love to eat things they shouldn't, and all the vets here have great tales of silly things they have removed from dogs stomachs or intestines. However, cats are usually far more sensible. This wasn't the case for a young cat called Sidney who came in to see vet Steve recently. He had vomited up a bit of a Nerf bullet and was feeling a bit sorry for himself. Steve gave him some anti inflammatories to help him feel better but 24 hours later he was still being sick. Vet Cat took an X Ray and could see part of a Nerf bullet still stuck in his intestines. Sometimes things like this will pass through so he had supportive treatment for 24 hours but unfortunately this wasn't able to pass through on its own. Cat decided to operate to remove it. This is a fiddly operation as the intestines of a cat are so small and we have to be very careful re infection. Sidney spent another 24 hours in hospital following the surgery but he was eating and bright almost straight away. A few weeks on and he's showing no signs of an issue and has been much more sensible with what he eats. We hope not to have to remove anything else from Sidney as he grows up! 🐈

Taking the time to remove “just a few” ticks from a hedgehog that was brought in to us a few weeks ago.
If you’d like to know more about ticks and fleas and how to safely remove them from your pet the RSPCA offer plenty of information, we’ve attached the link to their site 🔗

Lincoln is one of our older patients and over the last year has had lots of the aliments that we start to experience as we age. Having had surgery on a lump and surgery on his eye, as well as beginning to get problems with his kidneys, it’s been challenging at times to decide on the right combination of medications for him. Lincoln has had arthritis in his front paws for a little while and has been on medication for this, but he developed a secondary problem called carpal hyperextension, where the ligaments are no longer supporting the wrist joint very well. This was making it really hard for Lincoln to get around and he still loved his walks so we had to find a solution. Vet Steve suggested a WIMBA brace, which is a custom made, 3D printed support for Lincoln’s weak joint. Lincoln came in to have his leg specially scanned and then the brace had to be made in Poland and shipped over here, so Lincoln has been waiting patiently for a few weeks until fitting day arrived. Steve fitted the brace which Lincoln is proudly modelling. His owners can change the fitting on the brace to allow different levels of mobility for hanging out at home and for going on walks. We’re all very pleased that Lincoln can get out and about properly again!
There’s always lots of different options to manage arthritis in older dogs so if you’re worried about your pet, pop in and see us at the surgery. 🐾
