Lincoln is one of our older patients and over the last year has had lots of the aliments that we start to experience as we age. Having had surgery on a lump and surgery on his eye, as well as beginning to get problems with his kidneys, it’s been challenging at times to decide on the right combination of medications for him. Lincoln has had arthritis in his front paws for a little while and has been on medication for this, but he developed a secondary problem called carpal hyperextension, where the ligaments are no longer supporting the wrist joint very well. This was making it really hard for Lincoln to get around and he still loved his walks so we had to find a solution. Vet Steve suggested a WIMBA brace, which is a custom made, 3D printed support for Lincoln’s weak joint. Lincoln came in to have his leg specially scanned and then the brace had to be made in Poland and shipped over here, so Lincoln has been waiting patiently for a few weeks until fitting day arrived. Steve fitted the brace which Lincoln is proudly modelling. His owners can change the fitting on the brace to allow different levels of mobility for hanging out at home and for going on walks. We’re all very pleased that Lincoln can get out and about properly again!
There’s always lots of different options to manage arthritis in older dogs so if you’re worried about your pet, pop in and see us at the surgery. 🐾

Braxton 💙
It is with great heartache and sadness that we inform you of the recent sudden passing of Steve’s beloved dog Braxton.
You will I am sure recognise him as the lovable face that often welcomed clients and patients through our reception doors - he was always waiting with a wagging tail, so happy to see everyone! You may well of been in an appointment only to find Braxton’s nose poke through the door on his everlasting quest for a roaming gravy bone!
Braxton was a huge part of Hayle Veterinary Surgery. Loved by all of the staff and many of our clients and patients - he was a one- of- a kind dog, and a loyal companion to his family & extended family of whome there are many (Braxton loved a sleepover with friends, enjoying the delights that come with being spoilt at someone else’s house!) He touched many hearts.
Braxton is so dearly missed, by his best friend Steve , his family, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. We are blessed with so many lovely memories of his fantastic life, and will always be thankful for the special times we had. 💙
Sleep tight Braxton, you made every day that little bit brighter. 🌈

Have you noticed your dog slowing up a little? Do they struggle jumping into the car, or are they stiff getting up after a nap? Are they lagging behind on walks or showing changes going up and down the stairs? Often the small changes go unnoticed until they can no longer do the things they used to do so easily.
Max’s owner noticed he was slowing up and struggling doing the normal things he used to do. He came in to see us and we gave him an injection of Librela. Within 2 weeks his owner noticed an improvement in his movement and said he now has his spring back in his step! Here he is enjoying his walks again, at 15 years old he is doing amazing!
So what is this amazing Librela injection we hear you asking?
Librela is a new injectable antibody therapy to alleviate osteoarthritis in dogs.
It works like your dog’s own immune system, targeting and neutralising a protein that stimulates pain in patients with arthritis.
Through this action, one Librela injection alleviates pain for a full month, with the added benefit of a positive safety profile.
Arthritis affects 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years old, and potentially up to 35% of dogs of all ages. Our pets can’t tell us they are in pain and rely on us noticing the changes and doing something about it. Yes they may be getting older, but if there is a way of making them more comfortable and able to enjoy their daily activities pain free surely it’s worth considering.
Are you ready for another sleepy Sunday?! 💤

It’s Friday!!!
Let’s celebrate by sharing a few of the gorgeous faces we’ve had the pleasure of seeing recently - we hope they make you smile 🐾💙
It’s the weekend again, and we all love Coastal walks with our dogs 🌅
The views we get in Cornwall are beautiful - especially near the cliff edge, but please, please ‘Keep your dog on a lead’🙏🏼
No matter how much you trust your pet, put their safety first ♥️ We have recently treated 2 dogs that have jumped straight out of the boot of their cars and run off the edge 😞 It only takes a second of distraction and the worst can happen.

A day in the life of a dog castration!
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes when you leave your pet with us for the day?
We thought we’d give you a few snippets of the day when Albert came in to be castrated.
When you bring your pet in they will be given a health check and the procedure will be explained to you. You will then be asked to sign a consent form.
Pre anaesthetic blood tests are a great way to give us a picture of your pets general health and tell us if there are any underlying issues that are not yet showing any symptoms, such as early liver or kidney problems, or any blood clotting disorders. Our in house lab gives us the result within minutes so there is no delay on any procedures while waiting for results!
If all the checks indicate there are no problems we will give your pet a pre-med injection which will relax them while they are in the kennel and prepare them for their anaesthetic. They are also given an injection of pain relief so they are comfortable and not in any pain when they wake up.
Next they will have a small catheter placed in their foreleg so we have access to their vein. An injectable anaesthetic is given through this catheter, and once asleep an intubation tube is placed into their trachea so we can keep them anaesthetised with an inhalation gas (isolflurane).
The surgical area is then clipped and cleaned with a surgical scrub ready for the operation. Meanwhile another nurse will be continually monitoring your pet throughout it’s operation, checking it’s heart and respiration rate, blood pressure, oxygen concentration, temperature, mucous membrane colour and refill time, pupil position, jaw tone, amongst other checks. This is to ensure they are at a safe depth of anaesthesia throughout the procedure. They will be connected to a multi-parameter machine which takes regular readings for the nurse, and manual and visual checks are also taken.
After prep is complete they are moved to our dedicated sterile th
