Did you know that rabbits and guinea pigs should not be housed together? Contrary to popular belief, these two small furries should be kept separately. After all - they are two different species.
Whilst rabbits and guinea pigs do have similar care requirements, there are some risks associated with housing these two fluff balls together:
🐰Rabbits and guinea pigs need different diets. Guinea pigs cannot create their own Vitamin C, therefore they require this from their diet.
🐰Rabbits may bully guinea pigs as they are a smaller species than them. It can be difficult for them to communicate with each other, as they have different methods of communication.
🐰Rabbits can carry a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica, which can be transmitted to guinea pigs. This can cause a respiratory infection and can even be fatal to guinea pigs.
Of course, if you already have a rabbit and a guinea pig that are living happily together, it may cause more problems by separating them. However, we recommend keeping these species separate, in the majority of cases.
