XX520 Battles Through History
Had a great weekend at the new event Battles Through History in Ardingly delivering STEM engagement to young people and promoting an interest in aviation.
The show has a range of re-enactors from Medieval Knights through to the modern day.
We were very pleased that ITV News popped by to say hi. 😁🛩

Another success this week. it was time to attend to the rudder trim. Seized solid for 20 years, we have been lubricating the teleflex (push pull) cable periodically over the last year but haven’t had the time to give it much attention.
Thursday it was the task for our 1343 team members and after a short period of manipulation using their newly found hand-skills with Mole grips and using the cockpit trim wheel they had success.
It’s great to have another feature of the Bulldog back in working order for our visitors and cadets to try out and learn from.

After a lot of scraping to remove sealant the old crazed windscreen in finally out. Many of the rivnuts in the frame were loose so required the screw heads to be ground off to remove the windscreen and the rivnuts will have to be replaced at a later date.
We have a second hand but serviceable replacement windscreen thanks to Ben at Aerofab Restorations, Thruxton.
Don't believe UV damages your skin? Just look at our Bulldog!
After 20 years outside in the sun everything on the topside is in a poor condition. We've had to replace the windscreen and canopy as they've been destroyed by sunlight, as has the paint work, particularly the white.
So time to remove the loose flakey paint ready for new primer, undercoat and top coat. Taking it in short shifts and wearing full PPE Cpl Burman has made good progress.
Fortunately the red and lower surfaces just need cutting and polishing.
Great team work today by Hillier and Cpl Burman. A couple of hours work and we completed both stabiliser tip modifications.

Tonight was riveting.
Both solid and blind fasteners. Now nearing completion of our biggest job, the reduction of size of the stabiliser. The cadets where learning how to use a pneumatic hammer gun and block, drilling and river squeezers.
A quick interview with Cadet Alex Hillier about why he joined the Bulldog project.

Work progressing on the right hand stabiliser today, removing the skins so that the spars can be cut down, 2 ribs removed and the tip refitted. This is all to allow the Bulldog to fit inside the transport trailer which is 730mm narrower than the stabiliser.
An advantage of the fact the airframes never going to fly, we can modify it for its new use.
