How many of you have had to call your farrier (generally on a Friday evening) about a pulled shoe?

So frustrating! A weekend of competing ruined because your horse decided to forget where its feet were! That split second decision to pirouette onto their shoe making your regret learning your test!

Biomechanically though, the process of removing a shoe can have major implications on the comfort of your horse and ability to perform well.

Try to step on the back of one of your shoes and pulling it off and you will know that its uncomfortable and painful!

Since setting up EB Equine, I have seen so many horses that have become uncomfortable and started to struggle with saddle slip and lateral movements after pulling a shoe.

Assessing what effect the shoe pull has had and making exercise amendments to help the muscles which have subsequently tightened up can make a huge difference, especially early on after the incident!

The last ten years in the equestrian world have seen lots of change, and one of the growing trends noted is that of barefoot horses. While not being shod is nothing new (after all that’s how horses are made!), the benefits of having an unshod horse are being recognised and utilised more in equestrian sport. A barefoot horse is classed as any horse not having shoes fixed (nailed or glued) to their feet, though they might wear hoof boots for exercise or turnout to provide support, protection and traction for their soles on some surfaces.

We all know the first step towards a sound shod horse is a good farrier but what about barefoot equines?

Well, quite simply put, the answer can well be the same! All farriers will agree that keeping any horse sound is more about the trim than the shoe, and a significant part of the 4 year training they receive is in the anatomy and function of the equine foot. This means that although we associate farriers with shoes, they are experts in trimming horses’ feet for the barefoot life too!

There are other practitioners able to trim horses’ feet such as equine podiatrists or barefoot trimmers, however it is always worth bearing in mind that unlike farriers, their title isn’t protected meaning they don’t need to have any qualifications or to have received formal training to call themselves this.

Trimming a horses feet requires expertise and there are some good bare foot practitioners out there. However regrettably there are a lot of poorly trained bare foot practitioners who can cause significant harm. We have had many cases within the practice where horses have come to harm due to being badly trimmed or where owners have received incorrect advice.

Whoever you call out to trim your horse’s toes, the important thing is to make sure they are fully qualified and insured to do so. If you need help finding a farrier, head over to https://www.farrier-reg.gov.uk/find-a-farrier and have a look!

Today I got to try something new and different!

It's a product I first came across about 3 years, I have been keen to try it ever since. I just needed a willing volunteer.
Colin was so sure about having the big white mould on his foot but once it was agreed it was best not to look at it and just keep it eating treats. He was perfect, stood really well putting up with me faffing with is feet.
In short, Formahoof forms a resin hoof around the horse hoof to protect the hoof. The different moulds allowed different size feet and various applications. Even a metal shoe to be fitted to the resin.

Great way to warm up on a chilly morning.18 hands but so gentle and friendly.

Trim 3 weeks ago by a 'barefoot trimmer'

Poor young pony is suffering with a very severe case of laminitis.

Clearly say from the x-rays and photos the feet have been left far too long in the toe. Only prolonged in the pony suffering.

Once again, please use a registered Farrier. We are trained to trim feet that suffering from laminitis.

'Trimmed' 5 weeks ago by a barefoot trimmer.

The Medial-lateral balance was out on all four and all four feet were miss shaped.

Sorry for the poor quality photos we were hiding from the rain. Don't worry I was working with a head torch.

Please make sure you use a qualified and registered Farrier for hoof care. Shod or un shod.

Laminitis.

I have had more clients lose horses this summer than any other.

Laminitis kills...

Reduce grazing
Monitor weight
Check feet for heat daily
And ride it...!

If you suspect an issue. Treat as an emergency, contact your vet without delay. If they are not available contact another vet. Tomorrow might be too late.

Remember Laminitis can not be cured. Only maintained. Therefore prevention is essential.
