Vet David at Head and Head Veterinary Practice Ltd came to visit the rescue today for our annual inspection.

He timed it just right as I was cleaning out the herbs and spices (Fennel, Saffron, Tumeric and Star Anise) for the third time today, so David transferred them back into the large ICU for me.

These visits are SO important...Being our registered veterinary practice they inspect the rescue as a whole, assess the patients, review paperwork from standard operating procedures, our medication agreement/stock list, admission forms, daily checks, release policies, and all the other policies and procedures associated with the running of a hedgehog rescue.

I'm delighted to announce that Vet David is very happy with the set up here, everything that is in place and no recommendations were given.

Yay! 🥳❤🦔💙

🐾 Ever wonder why your cat bumps their head against you?

This endearing behaviour, known as 'bunting,' is a display of affection and trust. Cats have scent glands on their heads, and by rubbing against you, they're marking you with their unique scent, a gesture reserved for their closest companions.

☀️ SUMMER TIME ☀️

As the sun starts to shine brighter, let's not forget some of our pale skinned furry friends' skin protection!

May 27th is Sunscreen Day, reminding us of the importance of safeguarding those pet such as white coated animals with pink skin from harmful UV rays. Just like us, some pets can suffer from sunburn and may occasionally lead to skin cancer.

Ensure your pet stays safe in the sun by limiting access to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. If tolerated and won’t be licked off, apply pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas. Also, provide shady spots outdoors.

Let's keep our pets happy, healthy, and sun-safe! ☀️🐾

🐾 Attention all cat owners in England! 🐱

Don't forget, the deadline for microchipping your feline friend is quickly approaching. Starting from June 10th, it's a legal requirement for ALL CATS in England to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they're 20 weeks old. Remember, failing to comply could result in a hefty fine of up to £500! But fear not, microchipping your cat doesn't have to break the bank - it's a small price to pay for peace of mind and compliance with the law 🏷️

Don't wait until it's too late! Contact our team today to schedule a microchipping appointment for your furry friend and ensure they're protected and legal.

💔 SAYING GOODBYE 💔

When we welcome pets into our lives, we anticipate that one day we'll bid them farewell, but the timing is often unexpected. Circumstances may arise, leading to an earlier goodbye than planned.

Various factors can contribute to this:
▪️ Sudden illness: Sometimes, a rapid onset of illness prompts a euthanasia decision.
▪️ Behavioural problems: behaviours that impact the quality of life of the pet and/or the owner
▪️ Accidents: Unforeseen accidents may lead to the need for euthanasia.
▪️ Euthanasia during anaesthesia: In exploratory operations, if untreatable issues are discovered, euthanasia might be recommended while your pet is anaesthetised to prevent further suffering. Your consent is always sought, and vets often prepare you for potential serious findings beforehand.

Capturing your thoughts on end-of-life preferences, regardless of your pet's age, can be beneficial. This proactive approach ensures that, in the unlikely event of a sudden goodbye, you have an idea of your wishes for your beloved pet. https://www.compassionunderstood.com/page/saying-goodbye-suddenly

🐈 DITCH THE ITCH 🐕

Over the next few months, we’re raising awareness of skin disease – a really common problem in cats and dogs!

Did you know... Skin problems are one of the most common reasons owners take their pet to the vet.

Abnormalities such as excessive scratching, redness, inflammation, hair loss and lumps and bumps could be a sign of a wide range of skin conditions, from allergies, fleas and ticks to infections. 🦟

If you notice any of these symptoms on your pet, you should contact your vet to ensure they get the treatment they need. Not only might the condition be causing them pain or discomfort, but mild skin problems can become more severe if left untreated.

Stay tuned for top tips and advice to help!

🚨 Important Update for XL Bully Owners 🚨

The government has announced an extension to the deadline for neutering young XL Bully dogs, following engagement with the veterinary industry.

🗓️ New Neutering Deadline: For XL Bully dogs under seven months on 31st January 2024, the new deadline is extended to 30th June 2025. This decision aims to ensure the safe management of the XL Bully dog population while balancing their welfare with public safety.

Neutering Reminders:
🔹Dogs aged under 7 months on the 31st January 2024 are now to be neutered by 30th June 2025
🔹Dogs aged 7 – 12 months on 31st January 2024, must be neutered by the end of 2024
🔹Older dogs (over 1 year on 31st January 2024) must be neutered by 30th June 2024

Owners of older dogs are reminded to book a neutering appointment with the vet well in advance of the deadline.

Failure to provide evidence of neutering by the deadline may result in legal repercussions, including potential seizure of the dog by the police.

🚫 Breeding and rehoming of XL Bully dogs remain prohibited, regardless of age.

For any questions or to schedule a neutering appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. 01326 572216

Your cooperation ensures the welfare of your pet and compliance with legal requirements.🩵
