🪰 FLY CONTROL - SMALL HOLDING 🪰

Parasitic flies are a cost-effective and sustainable way of reducing flies on your farm or smallholding. They are particularly suitable for organic holdings.

▪ Fly parasite species parasitise fly pupae in breeding grounds on farm, thus reducing flies at source.
▪ They are native UK species which live for between 10-30 days depending on weather and conditions
▪ Each bag contains c.25,000 parasitised fly pupae.
▪ The aim of the program is to spread these pupae around known or suspected fly breeding areas on farm such as dung heaps, unscraped areas along shed edges or on top of slats or slurry pits. Once hatched the parasites actively search out biting and nuisance fly pupa to breed and carry on their own life cycle.
▪ The number of bags required will depend on herd size, fly numbers and amount of fly breeding areas on farm, with fewer bags required long term as fly population decreases.

Speak to us about how you can control flies sustainably and organically!

🐑 SHEEP WORRYING 🐑

The improving Spring weather brings with it the challenge of the public walking their dogs across our fields. 🐑

Print your free dog control signs to put around your fields here bit.ly/NSAVP0422 – especially if they are traversed by a public right of way.

Visit the NSA website sheepworrying.org.uk to find out how you can prevent attacks and what you can or should do if they happen.

💩 TEST & WEIGH 💩

Are you carrying out a ‘test and weigh’ approach to worming? Give yourself a pat on the back if so – you’re helping to be sustainable and preventing resistance to wormers. 💩🌍💊

Top tips:
🔹 Carry out faecal egg counts in early summer to gauge level of pasture contamination
🔹 Weigh young livestock regularly to check that they’re growing and not suffering from parasites
🔹 Only treat animals that are not growing as expected
🔹 Remain vigilant for lungworm outbreaks in calves where it’s hard to avoid turning out onto contaminated grass, monitoring is key.

We can help you develop a parasite control plan for the coming year, so if you do want advice please get in touch – 01326 572215

🐄 ARE YOU VACCINATED AGAINST LUNGWORM??? 🐄

Lungworm has started to emerge and more animals are showing clinical signs.

Clinical signs of lungworm can include:
🫁Fever
🫁Coughing
🫁Shortness of breath

More severe cases can include:
🫁Open mouth breathing
🫁Pneumonia
🫁Stunted growth with relapses of illness

The spread of lungworm is helped by a fungus, known as Pilobolus, this orange fungus that can be seen on cow pats, explodes and carries potential lungworm across pastures.

🪱 HOW TO ASSESS YOUR PASTURE FOR PARASITES 🪱

Categorising your fields high to low risk will pay dividends for your livestock health this grazing season.

🟢 Low risk – fields that haven’t been grazed before (forage crop, new ley etc). This gives the pasture a break from parasite larvae.
🟠 Medium risk – fields grazed by adult cattle only the previous year. Adults excrete less larvae than young stock, though there will still be a risk.
🔴 High risk – fields that have had young stock or stores on the year before. Putting young stock on the same fields year after year will increase the likelihood of parasite burden and the requirement for treatment.

Get a farm map out and colour the fields, an easy and visual way for the whole team to see the risk and know what to be looking out for when checking livestock.

🐑 ABORTIONS 🐑

The two most common causes of abortion seen in sheep are enzootic abortion (EAE) and toxoplasmosis. 🐑

The signs of Enzootic Abortion in Ewes (EAE) are:
🔹 Aborted foetuses or weak lambs
🔹 Red and inflamed placenta
🔹 Rusty brown discharge
🔹 Otherwise healthy ewes

The signs of toxoplasmosis you see depend upon the stage of pregnancy:
➡️ Early Pregnancy - Barren ewes at scanning / return to the tup
➡️ Mid Pregnancy - Mummified and aborted foetuses
➡️ Late Pregnancy - Weak lambs or even normal lambs

It’s important to investigate abortions in order to help protect the rest of your flock, which can be done in the form of vaccination.

Please get in touch as soon as you’re aware of an abortion and we can do the diagnostics. 01326 572215

💉 VACCINATIONS 💉

Do you know which are the highest priority vaccinations in your flocks and herds?

Check out the table below 👇

It should be considered that flocks or herds are vaccinated as a default for the below, unless appropriate justifications have been identified by your vet and farmer working together.

This should be regularly reviewed in your Herd/Flock Health Plans.

If you would like to discuss this further or book your vaccines, please call the practice 01326 572215

🪰 FLY PARASITES & CONTROL 🪰

Biting and nuisance flies cause all sorts of problems during the summer, especially on dairy farms and more intensive systems. 🪰

Our Parasitic Flies enable you, as livestock farmers, to take a proactive, cost-effective approach to issues caused by biting and nuisance flies. In turn, you can reduce insecticidal and antibiotic use, whilst improving potential herd performance during the spring and summer months. 💊☀️

It is a long-term approach to reducing your overall fly population. Therefore, we do encourage that you utilise in conjunction with other traditional methods of fly control for the first few years.

Our Veterinary Livestock Technician Annice will come out every 2 weeks and disperse the parasitic wasps starting at the end of March all the way through to October. 👍🏻

If this is something you are interested in, please call the practice on 01326 572215

🐮 OUT WINTERING CATTLE 🐮

Out-wintering can be a successful system for adult beef cattle but it’s not a low management one. It needs proper planning and preparation with animal welfare being the key priority. Some areas to consider:

Shelter – artificial or natural, there should be adequate shelter for adverse weather conditions and a dry place to lie down.

Feeding site – this should be on high ground with good drainage, and accessible to farm vehicles.

Fluke – extended grazing will increase the risk of liver fluke. Liaise and monitor with your vet for any clinical signs or necessary treatment.

BCS – monitor body condition closely as beef cattle coats can make it harder to notice a loss in condition.

If you are concerned about your cattle over the winter period, please speak to your vet or call the practice.

🐑 LAMBING 🐑

Overall antibiotic use is relatively low within the sheep sector, but there is a very high usage around lambing time. 💊

Six years ago, SRUC Veterinary Services reviewed the antibiotic sensitivity results for E.Coli from lambs less than four weeks of age. Over half of these cases showed resistance to a common antibiotic used at lambing! 😱

If we are more selective with our antibiotics, we are not only saving financially but reducing resistance. Also due to the Red Tractor updates, prophylactic use of antibiotics is now restricted, increasing the importance of preventative protocols.🐑

Please speak with your vet for advice and tips on how best to manage antibiotic use at lambing.🩺

🪱 PARASITE CONTROL - TOP TIPS 🪱

💊Use the appropriate product for the parasites expected or already known to be present.

💊Be sure to read the label to make sure you’re using as prescribed.

💊Ensure you’ve checked the expiry date before use as well as how long the product can be stored after opening.

💊Be sure to calibrate equipment to ensure the dose intended is the dose dispensed.

💊Double check the dosing equipment you’re using is compatible with the product

💊Do not treat unnecessarily, ensure you’re treating a burden correctly (or at all) by discussing the most appropriate diagnostics with your vet.

💊Weigh animals if possible, if not – dose to the heaviest in the cohort.

🏷 TAGGING TOP TIPS 🏷

🐮The ideal location for a tag is in the middle one-third of the ear, between the rises in auricular cartilage.

🐮Tags placed too close to the head will fit too tightly due to the thicker cartilage and may cause tissue necrosis.

🐮Tags placed too far towards the top or bottom of the ear are easily torn out.

🐮Bacteria and viruses can be spread by shared ear taggers, ensure you keep the tagger disinfected.
