A bit of a different morning for us at Amethi today. After receiving a call this morning regarding a heifer that had fallen off the cliff a rescue mission went in full swing to get her back up safely!

She was a bit spooked after her fall and no one was able to get close to her. So, we recruited the help of Chris Gardener and his dart gun to heavily sedate the cow, allowing Mullion and Tolvaddon fire crews to hoist her back up the cliff to safety!

Once back to safe ground, there was chance to give her a full check over and remarkably she only has a few scuffs and bruises!

It was a slow recovery but she is now, very wobbly, but back on her feet! Great efforts from all for saving the now named “Chloe the cliff cow!”

Also special thank you to Kynance Cove Cafe for the generous cake! It definately kept us going on the trek down the cliff!

🪱The wet weather this year has meant that we’ve been seeing more cases of parasites than usual.🪱

In particular Haemonchus Contortus, The Barber’s Pole Worm, seems to be prevalent. This worm sucks blood from the sheep, with one worm removing up to 0.05ml/day. Female worms also produce very high quantities of eggs 5000-15000 per day, meaning numbers can build up and cause disease very quickly.

Signs of Haemonchus are pale gums and eyelids, weakness and collapse. Diarrhoea is usually only seen if there is also infection with other worm types. In more chronic infections you may see a “bottle-jaw” type swelling along with failure to thrive and weight loss.

Regular worm egg counts can help to pick up Haemonchus before it starts to cause disease, along with weighing lambs and monitoring their condition.

Haemonchus is very prone to developing resistance against wormers so it is important to check that your wormer is working properly with post-drench worm egg counts.

☎️ Give us a call to discuss anything about worming and we’ll help come up with the best plan for your farm.

Further cases of BTV3 has been confirmed in Norfolk and Suffolk in both cattle and sheep.

Due to evidence of local transmission, the existing TCZ has been revoked and a Restricted Zone has been put in place around the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. Keepers of cattle, sheep, camelids and other ruminants must remain vigilant and follow the restrictions on animal and germinal product movements that apply.

Last night Team Amethi said both thank you and fairwell to Saffron as she is now getting ready to head back to her final year at University.

She has been an invaluable member of the team over the last 6 months, and we will miss her dearly!

We wish you the best of luck, and make sure you remember to pop by to visit us with some of your lovely cake 👍.

Many of you may remember Bert, the cheeky goat who was rather poorly earlier this year….

Unfortunately Bert couldn’t stay out of trouble, a silly climbing decision left him with a broken leg.

After 6 weeks in a cast and on bed rest, several complications and set backs, it was wonderful to receive this video of Bert getting his groove back on four legs. Picture of avert showing off his fancy pink wrapped cast added in the comments!

I think that’s now enough mischief for one goat Bert!

🎉 Happy Birthday Anthony 🎉

We would like to take the opportunity to wish Anthony Penrose a happy birthday. We hope you have a lovely day with Trishie and the family.

It also marks 6 months since Anthony started working with Amethi so it seemed appropriate to do a first day and recently taken photo comparison from a very cold, wet TB testing day. As you can see, he is still very much enjoying being part of the team 😜😂.

💩 Are your calves scouring? 💩

Calf Scours has the potential to be a rapidly fatal condition due to the significant fluid loss and resultant dehydration.

It has a variety of causal factors, from simply over feeding, to more sinister reasons including Viral (rotavirus, coronavirus), Bacterial (E. Coli), or parasitic (Cryptosporidium or coccidiosis), to name a few. Each cause has a different treatment, so ensuring you know exactly what to treat is essential.

Not only do we offer prompt, in house, faecal worm egg counts, we can also perform an on farm rapid faecal analysis to rule out E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Rotavirus and Coronavirus.

If your struggling with calf scours do not hesitate to give us a call and let’s work together to get to the bottom of it!

🐐Smaller doesn’t always mean easier 🐐

On a recent routine visit to these girls, they gave us the run around leaving us all sweating whilst they remained looking calm and collected.

After being caught by their brother it was our job to ensure that any potential pregnancy was avoided! A simple job…. made trickier by their Houdini antics.

📣 Exciting Announcement 📣

As many of you already know, our team is growing with the addition of Alex in a few months. With the extra pair of hands, we will be able to substantially increase our workload, but more importantly start working on some exciting projects to increase the services we provide to you. So, watch this space. Here are a few words from Alex to introduce herself to you all;

Hi I'm Alex, I am counting down the days until I join the Amethi team at the end of September!

I've been a farm vet in Shropshire for 7 years working with a variety of beef, dairy and sheep farmers as well as smallholders. I am excited to now have this opportunity to return to the South West. I grew up in Somerset where I gained my initial passion for all things sheep on a local farm.

Outside of work, I love being outdoors with my Labrador, Blake. He's particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of beach walks every morning!
Really looking forward to meeting and working with you all soon.

🎊Happy Friday! 🎊

We are always delighted to receive updates on how our cases are doing! Legolas, the handsome 21 year old alpaca, has been visited by us on a couple occasions but we were delighted to receive the update of him doing well, along with this wonderful photo!

🐄 Have you ever considered having a vasectomised bull? 🐄

A vasectomy is a skilled but fairly quick procedure where a portion of the “vas deferens” (the tube that transports the semen from the testicles to the p***s) is removed. This vasectomised bull is then the best form of heat detection! He will even pick up on those silent bullers that you would otherwise miss. The procedure leaves the bull infertile, so although he will be interested and show you which cows you need to serve, he will not get them pregnant.

Last month we had the pleasure of performing this procedure on a stunning Devon, yearling. With each missed heat estimated to cost a beef farmer £90-£120, this boy is definitely going to earn his keep.

🐄 Being the first person to see a calf and it’s heartbeat will always be one of my favourite things to do. 🐄

Our scanner can link up to a mobile phone enabling us to show our clients what we are seeing when conducting fertility visits. From good news, like in this cow, with a positive PD, to explaining problems if they arise the ability to show what we are seeing is proving invaluable.

Happy Sunday!
Delighted to assist this wonderful heifer calve a rather large bull calf this afternoon! It’s fair to say it was a tight squeeze, but this girl took it all in her stride and has shown already to be a brilliant mum!
