Beano's Ballpark: Useful Information

All information is available on our website: www.beanosballpark.co.uk, together with maps & pictures. What it’s all about

Have trouble finding a safe place to train, walk or play with your dog? Do you ever wish that you had your own field for off-lead, hassle-free exercise? Well, Beano’s Ballpark might be just what you’re looking for. Not only are there tw

o beautifully mowed, fenced fields to choose from, but also, a separate fenced training area

The Fields: The Ballpark, (2.5 acres) & The Bolthole, (1.5 acres) are at opposite ends of our 21 acre farm, with separate access & can be hired by individuals with their dogs, for one hour sessions. During that time, you could practice
skills, work on training, or just throw a ball around, enjoy the view & have a good time, without someone else’s dog ruining your fun! Both fields are fully fenced & gated with approximately 4' lamb fencing & higher Cornish hedges behind. There are stunning moorland views from each field & benches & tables for your use, so that you can bring a picnic. You may drive straight into both the fields, (weather permitting!) We have toilets on site for your use. Cost:

Initial & ‘Pay As You Go’ sessions: £10 per hour

Beano's 'Mates Rates': £9 hour.
4 sessions paid in advance for £36
These sessions must be booked & used within one calendar month of purchase date

All prices include exclusive use of the field, for up to 3 dogs. Additional dogs £1 extra, per dog, to a maximum of 6 dogs at any time, (unless by prior arrangement). Shared bookings, (ie: extra car or dogs from a different household): £3 extra
Payments can be made in cash, or in advance, by bank transfer

How do I book? The fields are available for hire, most days, from 8am to dusk. To book a field, please contact us by telephone: (01326 340627 or 07813 984662), email, or via Facebook, to arrange. Wherever possible, we advise that you book at least 24 hours in advance for a session. Alternatively, you can phone between 8.30 & 9.30 am, to see if there are any slots available for that day. For those who do not wish to come in bad weather, we would prefer you to ring on the day, rather than to book in advance & then fail to arrive. The booking is by the hour, with 50 minutes use of the field & 5 minutes each end for arrival & departure. Please ensure that you do not arrive early, or leave late, in order not to compromise other field users. Our farm is a good half-mile from the road, with our fields surrounding the house. No other dogs will be allowed in the field during your hire, but please be aware that a footpath runs within sight of the field boundaries, so please ensure that your dogs remain either in the fenced field, or on lead in other areas, at all times. We allow enough time between bookings, that you will not encounter other field users, or their dogs, but please ensure that you don’t arrive early or leave late, to avoid this happening. Whilst the field is completely fenced, we cannot ensure complete security for every dog. We are happy for you to come & visit in advance to have a look at the facility & assess its suitability for your needs. We do not use shared water or toys, for hygiene reasons, so please bring your own with you. If you’ve forgotten anything though, please do feel free to ask! We request that field users pick up dog waste, cigarette butts, bits of broken or chewed toys, litter etc & take it with you off-site. Most people are very good about this & our fields are very clean, with no hazards. We check the fields several times a day with our two terriers, who make excellent dog poo monitors, but if you come across a poo that someone might have missed, you’ll get extra points if you bag that too! First Visit? For initial sessions, please download the Beano's Ballpark Registration Form attached here, complete it & bring it with you. We will meet you on arrival & show you around. Please bring water, treats, favourite toys &, of course, poo bags! When you arrive, please leave your dogs in your vehicle while you book in. Terms & Conditions

All bookings are subject to the terms & conditions on the Registration Form. Having been informed of these conditions, it is assumed that you, (& all members of your party), accept them if you make a booking. Directions

Beano’s Ballpark is situated down a quiet farm track, (with passing places!), in the hamlet of Halwin: between Porkellis & Carnkie. Sat Nav: We would strongly advise against using Sat Nav, as you might to end up in some very peculiar places! Instead, any of the following are more likely to get you here. Google Maps: Just type in Beano’s Ballpark, TR13 0PD for map & directions. Prefer it the old-fashioned way? For written instructions & maps, please see our printed directions below or on www.beanosballpark.co.uk

On the right track? Find Halwin School. Immediately opposite the school is a track through fields, with double gates. This is our neighbours’ private track, so please don’t go down it! Beside the school is the School House & immediately opposite this, is a farm track with a sign saying Higher Dacum Farm

Go down that track, past the first farm, (which is not us) & keep going until you see a postbox with our logo on it. If you go down the drive a little way & park in the first field you find on the right, we will come & find you & show you around

Please feel free to give us a ring if there's anything else you'd like to know. Looking forward to seeing you,

Dee & Cath

We've turned to clutter clearing, as a means of keeping busy!..... but before we turn Beano's page into a selling site, we thought we'd ask you if anyone fancied a couple of soft crates!
They've had very little use, but unfortunately have some mould owing to the very damp house we live in!
These were pretty expensive new.
One measures 82x58x52 £50
Smaller one 71x50x50 £40
Also listed on marketplace if you'd like further details.
If you happen to use Beano's you're also welcome to view, whilst you're here. :)

We sadly said goodbye to Beano today.
It was fast and took us by surprise; we knew he had arthritis and we were working with JR Veterinary Physiotherapy Jodie, to improve his mobility.
He was clearly in a lot of pain and having to take three different painkillers at eight hour intervals, which still couldn't contain the pain.
On Wednesday, he had X-rays and and ultrasound, as he'd stopped eating, and we were now very concerned.
The X-rays revealed not only the worst arthritis our vet had ever seen, but also malignancies and possibly cancer rampaging through his entire body. Being a terrier and not one to complain, no one could have known how bad it was.
Yesterday nothing would convince him to eat. He was offered venison mince with bone broth, tuna, sardines, sweet potato, Orijen, fishy chews..... One of our lovely clients gave us all the packets of treats she had in her van.... he ate the lot, and a handful of cheese too! So at least he went with a full belly!
The relief for both him and us is enormous.
The team at City Road Veterinary Centre have been amazing throughout. Caring, compassionate and clearly very upset, having known Beano and us for many years.... He stole a lot of people's hearts.

We're out and about today, so will be unavailable to answer calls and messages, as we're leaving the phones and the diary at home. Beano's taking some time off, so will not be taking any bookings for new clients this coming week. Sorry for any disappointment. Some lovely comments coming in, but unfortunately it's not going to be a fun trip out. 🐾
We hope to see you at some other time.
Beano, Cath and Dee xx

We’ve been a little quiet recently on social media, as Beano hasn’t been too good lately ☹️.... Random one but does anyone have one of these things lying around that he could borrow until he gets his own one? He and we would be ever so grateful! Xx

Being a regular client though, we have given them a replacement time to enjoy the field.
We so enjoyed our slot. :)

Good info.... from a reliable source

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

It's a little hot today. Fortunately, all of our clients had booked early slots. These dogs were enjoying a shady spot and the cool breeze under the fir trees, in the Ballpark.
Nobody in now till later this evening. We're always happy to rearrange sessions when the weather is too hot... cold ... wet... we're very flexible.

Ooh that’s left us in tears..

With more individuals having to get to grips with muzzles due to the XL Bully legislation, we think it's an important reminder that we should NOT be using closed mouth muzzles to walk dogs. They MUST be able to pant or they risk heat stroke, especially as the weather gets warmer.

If you need a bite proof muzzle, that also allows dogs to pants, look at communities such as The Muzzle Movement, The Muzzle Up Project and The Bully Boardroom - Public Page for help and support.

Does Muzzle Mean Trouble?

❌No!

➡️Muzzles are an essential piece of equipment in in the dog behaviour world.

➡️A properly fitted muzzle can allow people to safely exercise and socialise their dogs in a safer environment.

➡️Sadly dogs wearing muzzles are subject to judgment.

➡️There are a number of reasons dogs need to wear a muzzle, and none of them mean you have a bad dog! What we do have is a dog that is experiencing the world and an owner who has safe control of their pet.

✅Muzzle training should always be a very positive experience so the muzzle becomes associated with enjoyable experiences like walks, socialising, activities off lead exercise for example. Training may be a slow process but is worthwhile to allow your pet to safely navigate their environment.

➡️There are a number of reasons why a dog may be wearing a muzzle. If you see a dog wearing one:

✅ Recall your dog in case the dog is fear reactive or dog reactive

✅ Communicate with the owner.

🗨️"Hello, how are you? Is your dog okay with my dog or would you like me to move further away?"

In many instances you may help reduce the anxiety of a fear reactive dogs owner who can then safely pass without worrying about unexpected confrontation.
You may also learn that their dog is perfectly fine with dogs and would love to play, and they are wearing the muzzle for other reasons.

These reasons can be:

✅Behaviour
Some dogs need a muzzle to safely exercise in public because they may be reactive of aggressive in certain circumstances. An owner walking a muzzled dog is taking excellent care to provide for their welfare needs to enjoy natural behaviour while still considering the safety of others.

✅ Dogs that scavenge on walks.
This could result in the dangerous ingestion of mouldy foods, or other dangerous objects like stones, large pieces of wood or rubbish and litter left around (P.s please bin your litter!!)

✅ Dogs that are on a medical elimination diet and are not allowed to eat anything else to check for food allergies

✅ Dogs with medical issues like pancreatitis meaning scavenging high fat treats could cause a nasty flare up. Or dogs with diabetes that need to stop grabbing sneaky treats on walks to help control their blood glucose levels.

✅ Dogs who have a high prey drive and may try to catch little animals or even nip other smaller dogs on walks

✅ Dogs that's are perfectly lovely but have been put under restrictions by Breed Specific Legislation like a Pit Bull Terrier or XL Bully.

Our Story

Beano's Ballpark: Useful Information All the information below is also available on our website: https://www.beanosballpark.co.uk/ together with maps & pictures. What it’s all about

Beano’s was actually the first fenced dog walking & exercise field in Cornwall; which opened its gates on 5th October 2014. Have trouble finding a safe place to train, walk or play with your dog? Do you ever wish that you had your own field for off-lead, hassle-free exercise? Well, Beano’s Ballpark might be just what you’re looking for. Not only are there two beautifully mowed, fenced fields to choose from, but also, a separate fenced training area, used for Hoopers in summer months. The fields: The Ballpark, (2.5 acres) & The Bolthole, (1.5 acres) are at opposite ends of our 21 acre farm, with separate access & can be hired by individuals with their dogs, for one hour sessions. During that time, you could do various acitivities, work on training, allow your dogs to sniff & explore, or just throw a ball around, enjoy the view & have a good time, without someone else’s dog ruining your fun! Both fields are fully fenced & gated with approximately 4' lamb fencing & higher Cornish hedges behind. There are stunning moorland views from each field & benches & tables for your use, so that you can bring a picnic. You may drive straight into both the fields, (weather permitting!)
