Tonight is stpetershenfield annual firework display. The fireworks are due to be let off at 7.30pm. Whilst this is a lovely community event, naturally some pets can find fireworks very distressing.
Please ensure that your pet is safely inside, your curtains are closed and your pets have distractions such as treats or lickimats available. Playing classical music can help, not only to calm your pet, but will also drown out some of the noise. Please do not leave your pet unattended.
If you are thinking of having your own firework display this year, please instead consider attending one of the local community events such as St Peters. This allows pet owners to be able to prepare their pets, safe in the knowledge that the fireworks are only let off at the scheduled, pre-advertised time.

💚🐾Luna has been in to us to be spayed in the last few weeks. Luna's owners sent her in with her favourite toy just to keep her company which she was with is and to make it as stress free as possible.

If your pet does feel anxious coming into the vets please do send them in with something that smells like and reminds them of home!

*Stewie did give some of the nursing team quite the fright when they went into Luna's kennel! 🤣

Did you know that a recent study found that approximately 23% of cats over the age of 9 have hypertension (high blood pressure).
The early symptoms can be vague, such as changes in demeanour and behaviour, lethargy and reduced appetite. Unfortunately, left untreated, high blood pressure can have very serious consequences such as blindness.

‼️In October we are offering blood pressure checks in cats for only £20, or free of charge if your pet is a member of the health plan. ‼️

💚 Did you know we have restarted our ever popular FREE arthritis clinics again?

The clinics are held on a Thursday at our Partridge Green surgery with our registered veterinary nurse Faye.

Faye has been a qualified veterinary nurse for over 20 years and has completed the British Small Animal Veterinary Association merit award in rehabilitation and physiotherapy. Alongside assessing mobility and signs of arthritis, Faye can also tailor a physiotherapy plan for your pet.

Our free arthritis clinics begin with a thorough history and assessment of your pet. We'll discuss everything from bedding to bathing and assess weight, size and mobility.

We can then recommend the appropriate management for your pet and can advise on many options such as

💚Joint supplements
💚Acupuncture
💚Hydrotherapy
💚Physiotherapy
💚Pain relief
💚Massage

In addition to this we can assess your pet's pain score, mobility and progression so that we can review how well they are responding.

If you would like to book you pet in for a clinic with Faye please give our team a call.

Kevin is a Greek mixed-breed dog who was rescued from the Greek streets by his owners in 2016 when he was about a year old. After enjoying his new life in England for a few years, Kevin's owner noticed some mild skin lesions and an intermittent lameness, both of which seemed to respond to symptomatic treatment for the next 6 years. However, unbeknown to everyone at the time, was that Kevin sadly had a much more serious disease process already taking hold.

Leishmania are a group of single-celled parasites which are transmitted via the bite of a sandfly in warmer climates. The infection causes dogs to develop skin problems, painful joints, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhoea and ultimately kidney failure. The treatment involves a gruelling 28 day course of strong medication which also made Kevin feel extremely unwell, so much so that we took regular breaks and even fitted a stomach tube so that the medication could be placed directly into his stomach.

Kevin was at the practice almost daily, for supportive care, medication, kidney checks and intra-venous fluid therapy. Through sheer determination from all involved, we are please to say that Kevin made a fantastic recovery and is now back to his chipper, energetic self, without the skin issues and painful joints!

Kevin will be monitored closely to make sure the parasite stays in remission but we have high hopes he will continue to enjoy his life disease-free!
