We aim to provide all of our clients with the very best care that the equine veterinary profession has to offer. We provide a full range of services from routine vaccinations and tooth rasping, up to the very highest level of specialist equine care. We have a team of world renowned specialist equine surgeons that will visit our clinic on a weekly basis to attend to the cases that we feel require r
eferral. Bridget Gatehouse graduated from Liverpool University in 1995 and Jack Wallace graduated from Edinburgh University in 2008. Bridget has worked in solely equine practice for 19 years while Jack has worked solely in equine practice since graduating 8 years ago. Whilst Bridget Gatehouse and Jack Wallace have over 20 years of combined equine veterinary experience, they also have considerable experience in the competition sphere. Bridget has ridden 6 winners as an amateur flat jockey. Jack rides as a point to point jockey, has ridden 3 winners and trains point to pointers at his father's farm. Jack's Grandfather Richard L.Wallace BVM&S MRCVS, was also a Veterinary surgeon, graduating from Edinburgh University in 1945 and worked as a large animal veterinary Surgeon in Henley in Arden. The name 'Walnut Hill' derived from the farm that Jack grew up on. His grandfather on retiring as a Veterinary Practitioner assisted Jack's father on the farm. If you seek the best care for your horse, be it your life-long friend and pet, or your Event horse that is looking to take the next step up the ladder, then we are here to attend to your horse's needs.

This week we celebrate our 10 year anniversary, and what a 10 years it has been!
We want to thank every one of our clients and team members, past and present, for supporting Walnut Hill and making it into the independent equine practice that it is today.
On 14th March 2014, Bridget and Jack founded Walnut Hill, which has since grown into a team of 9 equine vets with a busy clinic, supported by a large nursing and office team. We are very proud of our team and thankful to all of our clients.
We have some exciting plans for the next 10 years and look forward to sharing these with you

Equine Flu Vaccination rules have now changed following new advice from British Equestrian.
From the 1st January 2024 changes have been applied to initial courses and those restarting after this date.
See our handy table with updated interval dates, however we ask if you are wishing to compete with a particular governing body to check their requirements as it’s been seen the rules vary from each governing body to another.

🐎 Walnut Hill Equine Gastroscope Clinic 🐎

£125 including VAT, overnight care, trot up and sedation
A comprehensive gastroscope clinic is being run by our team of vets and clinical staff. A full treatment plan will be discussed for each case and an optional trot up prior to the gastroscope is included.
We are also happy to offer this at yards for the month of November for 4 or more horses - please call the office if you wish to discuss this in more detail

A cautionary tale – thorns are very common this time of year.
Early last year, ‘Jimmy’ went hunting and unfortunately came back with a left forelimb lameness and some swelling to the outside of the fetlock region.
Ultrasonography was used to further assess this area and a large thorn was found that had lodged into the lateral suspensory ligament branch. This can be seen as a hyperechoic (bright white) line on the ultrasound images.
‘Jimmy’ was referred into our clinic for standing surgery under local anaesthetic and sedation to extract the thorn as carefully as possible.
The surgery was very successful (the picture shows the size of the thorn, after removal). ‘Jimmy’ was maintained on intravenous antibiotics and pain relief.
Follow up scans showed complete removal of the thorn with the lameness progressively improving and the swelling subsiding.
Careful rehabilitation, to allow the suspensory branch to heal, and ultrasonographic monitoring ensured a great outcome with Jimmy now back out hunting this season!

One event that has remained certain this spring is the birth of many future sport horses and racehorses at our studs.
We are doing our best to maintain a degree of normality whilst adhering to the government’s guidelines on social distances and disinfecting ourselves thoroughly between each visit.
Fortunately most of our work is able to continue and we are able to keep caring for our equine community.
We will keep you updated on any changes to our service and like all of you, we look forward to the other-side of this curve!

Case study part 3: (Foal with contracted deep flexor tendon) We should be successful in the next 14 days with the application of the cast, if not then surgery will be required to cut the check ligament which will allow the lower limb to extend more easily. Following either of these procedures the prognosis is good - and all being well this little chap will achieve a normal level of athletic function and hopefully follow in his full sisters foot steps!
Case study part 1: We have been treating this lovely well bred showjumping foal from the owners of Weston Lawns Equitation, Georgia Reynolds & Mark Wells. He is full brother to the prolific 1m45 showjumping mare ‘Heartstrings’ (ridden by Jamie Wingrove), but was born with a contractural deformity of the left fore fetlock as result of a contracted deep flexor tendon. ... further post with additional pictures to follow!
