We had a great time meeting everyone at not one but two shows last weekend - Henley Show and the Canine Capers Fun Dog Show at Caversham Court Gardens.

We have lots of fab pics to share, so we'll post about the shows separately πŸ’š.

First up, Henley Farm & Country Show

At Henley Show, our fab vet Clare judged the Dog Show, while other members of our team manned our stall. Our lovely boss Fiona popped in too, and thoroughly enjoyed catching up with patients and clients.

This year, our stall's focus was canine osteoarthritis, so we brought along some of our 'behind the scenes' equipment for people to see and find out more about.

Staff dog Lucy was in charge of letting all passing dogs know that we had free treats available (and bagging several for herself, of course!). Good job Lucy!

'The Rock' a 107yr old Spur Thigh Tortoise was our special guest, and it's fair to say that he had a fantastic day, lapping up chin rubs from everyone he could, before being extended a special invitation from volunteers at the giant Aldabra tortoise enclosure to go and meet his big cousins!

Thank you so much to everyone who came to see us, we really did have a great day, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing you all πŸ’š.

If you and your dog(s) are looking for something to do this Saturday, why not pop along to the Canine Capers Greenshoots Annual Charity Dog Show?

The Show is raising funds for The Ways and Means Trust. A registered charity formed 50 years ago, the trust provides rehabilitation and training for adults with recurring mental ill health or with a learning disability.

This gorgeous cat was found in a member of the public's van late evening 3rd September 2024.

The van had not been used since Friday 30th August, so the cat could have been trapped in it since then. We are currently investigating other potential locations for where the cat may have stowed itself into the van, and will provide more information as we get it, but we're starting with spreading the word locally.

If this is your cat, please contact us:

The cat is safe with us.

Further descriptive details withheld for reunification purposes.

This lovely little cat was first found in the Gainsborough Crescent area of Henley around 4 months ago. She had a kitten in a resident's garden shed, which very sadly didn't survive. The cat disappeared for a week or so, but other than that, she appears to be spending all of her time in and around this resident's garden/shed. She has been brought to us as the resident was concerned that she was pregnant again - which we have confirmed.

If this is your cat, or you think you might know who her owner is, please give us a call:

πŸ“±01491 574490

She is safe and settling in well with us ❀️.

Our gorgeous stray cat and kittens are now in the safe hands of Thames Valley Animal Welfare (TVAW) Foster care ❀

It has been an absolute pleasure to be involved in this rescue - how lucky they are to have been spotted and rescued by our local cat hero, Brown and to have TVAW to make sure they find fantastic forever homes.

Before they left, we had to have one last photo shoot - so please enjoy these snaps 😻, and we will add a video of Mango (mum cat) in the comments - she has totally transformed from scared and spitty to purry and smoochy 😻

We have to admit that we're missing this little family, but are so happy to have helped them find a safe and happy future.

If you missed their story, you can find it here:

Some really useful information regarding dogs and heatstroke 🌑🌑🌑

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/URU7cFk5rjZHyGeD/

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

πŸ’§Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
πŸ’§Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
πŸ’§NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
πŸ’§Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
πŸ’§Move to a cool, shaded area
πŸ’§Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

πŸŒ…International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
πŸŒ…Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
πŸŒ…Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
πŸŒ…No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
πŸŒ…Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
πŸŒ…Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.
