It's finally upon us!! The partridge season is here. Are you and your dogs ready?
I'm looking forward to this first week. I will see how some of the younger dogs perform and if the spring and summers worth of training have paid off.

My little assistant helping me out on my last Gundog Training evening of the summer.
I would just like to say a big thank you to all of you who have trained with me this year. I'm forever grateful for your continued support. ๐
I will be running an occasional Sunday group session and 1:2:1's from home in Herefordshire throughout the autumn and winter.
Wishing you all the best shooting season. I can't believe it's here already. ๐

A belated post (this won't be a surprise to the people that know me)...
Both boys placed 2nd in the Usk Valley Working Gundog Club Noivce and Open last weekend.
Arcklebear First Blood (Rambo) 2nd in the Novice. FTCh Arcklebear Caribou 2nd in the Open.
I would like to say a huge thank you to the for putting on a lovely day. A big thank you to the landowners, judges, helpers and committee.
Gundog Working Tests take a huge amount of effort to organise. The work that goes in behind the scenes to allow us to run our s9gs is massive. The days and hours preparing running orders, setting tests and getting helpers is often overlooked by many. It is so important to give back to our sport so that we can all continue to enjoy competing.
If you attend a working test please be kind and courteous.
Expect to wait around at some point and refrain from moaning about it. If you don't like waiting, perhaps this isn't the sport for you.
At the end of the day, regardless of whether you feature in the awards, you should thank the judges and as many of the helpers and committee as possible - perhaps off to help them set down and pack. If you have to leave early, ask someone to pass your thanks on.
If things don't go your way, please do not start complaining about it on social media.
We are all here to enjoy this sport and our dogs. Please be kind people!!

Happy 5th Birthday Pudding!
Pudding (Arcklebear Arundel) was from my first litter out of Picnic (Arcklebear's Crested Ten) to Lee Haymans Paddy (Copperbirch Ross). The kindest temprament you could ask for in a dog.

This week, the dogs and I are off on a little training holiday. We set off on Saturday for Yorkshire.
Yesterday, I got to enjoy a lovely (albeit wet) day out competing with the dogs at the Vale of York Working Retriever Club Novice and Open test. The 2 boys did me proud and came away with an award each. Rambo (Arcklebear First Blood) came away with 2nd place in the Novice. Ted (FTCh Arcklebear Caribou) came away with a COM in the Open. Thank you to the judges and all involved in the running and organisation of the day. It was a fantastic day on some lovely ground with well thougout tests. Congratulations to the winners Rachel Pugh-Lewis and David Houghton. Well done to all other award winners.
Now, we're continuing our little holiday to Northumberland. ๐

Training now available! After a very delayed start to the year due to being busy with other things, I am pleased to announce that I am now taking bookings for 1:1 and group training.
As many of you already know, I'm not always the fastest to reply๐. If you have contacted me previously and have not heard from me, drop me another message and I'll get in touch.
A small part of me naively thought she was invincible. But our wonderful journey together sadly came to an end on Wednesday.
The dog that provided me with so many first experiences - the first dog I owned, the first field trial win, the first Field Trial Champion. She really was a super star!
She was always such a happy little dog. Dependable little Whiskers was by my side or there to greet me with a wagging tail everyday. Those crinkle cut ears would wipe away my tears and her little soft pink nose would provide a reassuring nudge if ever I needed it.
I am so grateful for all of the fantastic opportunities she brought and have so many happy memories to treasure. She was much more than just a dog!!!
Sleep tight Little Whisks. Love you always

โIf you set your goals ridiculously high and itโs a failure, you will fail above everyone elseโs success.โ
James Cameron
2023 season marked 10 years actively competing in Field Trials. The journey started in 2013 with Whiskey - FTCh Windoogpack Coral - entering her first season in Novice Field Trials and winning the third one we entered in December that year.
This year, I have celebrated several successes -
In January, I made up my third Retriever Field Trial Champion โ FTCh Arcklebear Caribou (who was also my first homebred FTCh).
In April, I was appointed as an A Panel Retriever Judge (currently the youngest Retriever A Panel Judge in England).
In November, I won an Open Cocker Spaniel Stake with Craiwarn Tinkers Tidy of Arcklebear, qualifying for the Kennel Club 2024 Cocker Spaniel Championship.
Also, in November, I was invited to judge my first AV Novice Spaniel Field Trial.
Amongst all of these successes were many goals that I did not achieve. The failures and disappointments never get any easier, but once the initial frustrations subside, it leaves me more determined with more focus.
A big thank you to all of those who help and support me along the way โ your patience in waiting for my reply or the gentle nudge when I havenโt, is always greatly appreciated. Iโm just a one woman band trying to navigate, juggle, and enjoy life the best way I can.
Happy New year all. Hereโs to a great 2024, set those goals high!!!

Trying to get a nice photograph of the Arcklebear team in a fabulous setting. Unfortunately, Feather was having far too much fun bombing around the place. The others don't look too impressed!!

Arcklebear Gundogs is a small kennel of black, yellow and fox red Labradors established by Clare Baker, a B panel retriever judge, currently based in Gloucestershire. A range of services are offered, including gundog training, basic obedience and stud services.
Group and one-to-one training sessions available, utilising some fantastic natural shooting ground in the heart of the Cotswolds between Cheltenham and Bourton-on-the-Water. The group sessions will be aimed towards Retriever breeds with Field Trials, Gundog Working Tests and picking up/ shooting in mind. Other gundog breeds welcome on this understanding.
I also offer one-to-one training for all gundog breeds (if not a retriever breed, the focus will be on obedience and retrieving skills). These sessions can be beneficial to you and your dogโs training, allowing you to work on specific problems and areas. Please contact me for availability and further details.
Dogs have always been a large part of my life and in April 2016 I gave up my career as a Therapy Radiographer to dedicate more time to dogs. I was fortunate to be introduced into the sport by my Grandfather, who was a game keeper. At the age of 10 I started handling and working his dogs, it was not long before he would enter me in Junior Handler competitions and we would go off around the country competing on the weekends.
The love and passion for the sport grew and a few years later I was able to own and compete with my own dogs, enjoying consistent success over the years - some of the greatest achievements, being a part of the Home Nations England Retriever team in 2016 and FTCh Windoogpack Coral qualifying for the International Gundog League Championship in 2016 and 2017.
My dogs are pets as well as a working companions and can be found in front of the fire after a day out picking up, beating or competing.
