Saxon is really obedient, especially when he thinks treats may be involved! He likes to try every command he knows in hope of a reward…

Ok here's Saxon's full profile - read on to find out more about His Gorgeousness :) We've been totally upfront and honest about his issues as well as highlighting his adorableness, because we believe the more information the better when it comes to finding the perfect match!

Saxon is a loving, loyal dog who adores his family, but is scared of the outside world and protective around visitors. He is likely to need a quiet, rural home with few visitors, no other pets and no young kids.

With his family, Saxon is an absolute sweetie: he’s a big cuddlebug and loves to snuggle up on a sofa (he thinks he’s a lap dog!), roll onto his back for tummy tickles, and get as many strokes as you’re prepared to give. And stroking him is a pleasure; he has the silkiest fur you’ll ever find, and is very handsome with his big puppyish ears, dark ginger fur and wrinkled face! He sits, lies and gives a paw on command, and is getting good at his wait command too.

Because of his anxieties, Saxon is hand shy and scared at first and it will take multiple visits (and some play sessions!) for him to build a bond and feel comfortable with you. But once you’re one of “his people”, you won’t meet a soppier dog!

Saxon loves time outside in the garden; he’ll chase a tennis ball (and even sometimes bring it back!) and his absolute favourites are his tug toy for tug-of-war and his big heavy football (actually a horse ball) to kick around with his family. He also has a funny habit of rubbing his back against nice scratchy scrubs which always makes us laugh! He thinks that it’s good fun to chase cats and squirrels in the garden, so probably shouldn’t live with other pets. And watch out: he’ll roll in fox poo if he can find any – though he's happy being washed or hosed down when needed.

In the home, Saxon is a really chilled boy who is very happy to settle and sleep all day; he’s no trouble! He has an adorable and very relaxing snore, and one of his cutest habits is to sleep with his tongue sticking out! He doesn’t need much exercise - a half hour walk and/or some football is plenty for him daily, though he can absolutely do more if you want – he’d play football all day! He occasionally has puppyish playful moments where he’ll toss a chew or toy in the air and chase it around! He especially loves chewing his kongs and bouncing them around; he also is fed in a kong wobbler or treat-dispensing ball and loves this too. He loves to sleep on his beanbag, rug or on a duvet in his crate; he’s a real snuggler.

Saxon is now happy to settle and sleep alone; he’s learnt to sleep downstairs on his own at night and to be left for up to four hours during the day. He is given a Lickimat at night and a kong if left during the day; these are also signs to tell him what’s going on and to keep him relaxed. Alone time in the day and at night should be built up slowly though as he’ll need to feel comfortable in his surroundings and not scared of them to be happy being left. He has never been destructive when left – at most he has whined and paced when a bit worried.

Saxon is scared of the outside world and this can manifest in a few scenarios. Firstly, walks are initially scary for him; he’s made really good progress with this with the aid of his favourite treats (chicken and liver) but initially he found it quite overwhelming to be outside of the house, so this will need to be built up slowly. He now walks nicely past people, ignores most vehicles and is learning to walk calmly past dogs – again with the aid of lots of treats to distract him.

Secondly, Saxon is quite sensitive to noise, so a very busy household might be tough for him. He has got used to hearing traffic and people when in the garden and ignores a very yappy neighbouring dog, but sudden or loud noises can make him bark (and he has a good bark on him).

He tolerates but doesn’t like car travel; he’ll get into the car if lured by treats, but he doesn’t much like being shut in and is restless during the journey (but quiet; he doesn’t whine or bark). He will tolerate it and doesn’t seem to be carsick, he just doesn’t settle much. He is better with a duvet to lie on and he would probably be better without a view out of windows as it seems to be the sight of things going by that makes him restless.

Most importantly, Saxon is very unhappy with visitors in his home; likely he feels protective of his space and family. He will usually bark when people come to the door and is hand shy, but he can also start barking and growling unpredictably at visitors – usually men – when they are standing up or moving, or sometimes with no obvious trigger. He has never bitten anyone but he does get right up close to them and is clearly very uncomfortable, so is best being contained behind a stairgate or in a crate and given plenty of space from visitors. He is fine with crates and stairgates when with his family (though his usual preference is to be in the same room as his family) and he tolerates them if visitors are present although if he can see them moving he isn’t relaxed and may bark. This behaviour may improve with desensitization training, as he has made good progress in other areas, but he is likely to need a home without many (male) visitors and where his family are happy to contain him if people do come round. It would likely be safest not to have him around young kids, though he has lived with kids old enough to respect his space.

Saxon and his needs in brief:
Saxon: 3 yr-old Dogue-de-Bordeaux/Rottie cross, labrador-sized
-Needs a home with very few visitors (not happy with non-family in his space; would need to be crated/shut away from visitors)
-Very affectionate - in fact, completely soppy! - with his family
-Settled and very easy in the home, sleeps most of the day with bursts of playfulness, can be left once settled, beautifully house-trained
-LOVES footballs and playing in the garden
-Scared boy out and about but learning that walks can be fun
-Rural home might suit him best, or at least somewhere where he doesn't see passers-by
-Has lived with older kids who respected his space
-Apparently lived with a cat but tries to chase cats in his garden so likely no cats
-Learning to ignore passing dogs on walks but no dogs in his home
