Our team are out on the roads come rain, shine or in today's case SNOW! ⛄️❄️

To all our farmers heading down to London today, and all our farmers having to stay behind to milk, to feed calves, to tend to their flocks and pigs - to do what they do every single day.

To those who own their farms, and to those that rent their farms. To those who have enjoyed a lifetime working their land and building a resilient business that the next generation are excited to take on. To those that are just starting out and battling to make ends meet. To those who have invested heavily in getting their farms future proofed. To those who probably should be slowing down a bit, but can't. To those who love their way of life, and those that are questioning their way of life. To those who are struggling to know what to do next. To those who are terrified of what might come next.

To those who work so hard to feed our nation, take care of our beautiful countryside and pass on your knowledge, work ethic and lifestyle to the next generation.

Know that we stand right behind you. The whole bloody country does.

As part of understanding the various roles our team members carry out within BFE, Sarah-Jane normally a familiar voice in our Ledbury office has spent the day with vet Ellie.

A particular highlight has been getting to know Rhys 7 month old c**t at Weston’s Cider. You may remember Rhys feature on our page earlier this year as a newborn foal, hasn't he grown!!🐴

October equine patient of the month🐴

Meet Mr Pickles!

Sadly Mr Pickles got himself in a bit of a pickle last month with a bad injury to his right eye. Unfortunately the eye was damaged beyond repair and required removal (enucleation). Fortunately with some combined team effort, we were able to do this in the comfort of Mr Pickles’ stable under sedation and nerve blocks. The surgery went very smoothly and Mr Pickles has been a star patient with lots of dedication from his owners.
Horses cope remarkably well following the loss of one eye and Mr Pickles is certainly thriving.😊👁

🦠Many of our clients will be aware that there has recently been a neurological case of Equine Herpes Virus reported in Gloucestershire.
Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) can cause a wide range of disease but most commonly it causes abortion in pregnant mares or respiratory disease. Less commonly it can cause neurological disease resulting in weakness, ataxia (wobbly gait), reduced tail tone, dog sitting or recumbency (lying down) and is often fatal in these cases.

🙏🏻Hopefully this outbreak will remain confined but there are steps that can be taken to minimise risk to your own horses.

💉Vaccination against EHV will reduce the severity of symptoms should a horse become infected. It will also reduce virus shedding and therefore spread. A primary vaccination course includes two vaccines given 4-6 weeks apart, followed by 6 monthly boosters. Vaccination is strongly recommended in pregnant mares and should be administered in the 5th, 7th and 9th month of pregnancy.

⚠Good biosecurity, isolation and quarantine policies are paramount to keeping any infectious disease away from your yard. Horses mixing at shows, clinics, fun rides, passing through market can all pick up infection. Minimise your risk by following these guidelines and if you have any questions please get in touch to speak to one of our vets.
