~ WAKING HEDGEHOGS ADVICE ~
Around now fat reserves are running very low and our little prickly friends start coming out of hibernation. A hedgehog generally will have lost around one third of its body weight during this time! With such a drastic weight loss they initially wake very disorientated and weak, they can appear drunk being very wobbly on their feet. Their first priority is water not foo

d so it is very important to ensure that there is ice free water in your garden all year round. Extreme low temperatures can cause a hedgehog to wake in the middle of winter. This is the time when we start to get ready for emergencies where hedgehogs have had their nests destroyed from people tidying up their gardens as the sun has decided to shine. March and April are such months for Dotties. We will admit many hedgehogs with soft tissue injuries from strimmers and garden forks along with fractured bones from spades and forks. The injuries are often horrific with operations needed and long periods of rehabilitation, some live with us as they are unable to be released. A number of our casualties will be put to sleep straight away due to the extent of the injuries. It is so sad when you think that they manage to survive winter lowering their metabolism to near death in order to survive only to be seriously injured by us. Always check before trimming or cutting down shrubs or bushes. Always check your compost heap before digging over with a fork. If you are removing a shed/ summer house please check underneath them. They love to nest under under garden sheds and patio decking. Long grass? Check before trimming or mowing. If spraying your fence please buy brands that are non toxic
Slug pellets…… invite hedgehogs in to help instead :)
Use non toxic alternatives to w**d killer

Please make the time to make your garden more hedgehog and wildlife friendly. We are happy to offer advice and google is amazing for ideas. Your garden could be a home for lots of prickly friends that will eat your slugs to help your garden and they are a pleasure to watch! Hedgehogs are in serious decline in the UK anyway but putting further obstacles in their way when they wake from the dangers of hibernation is easily avoided with a little knowledge and caring.

Victoria & Michael McLaughlin came to visit and this happened….. so when she’s ready she will be released under their amazing care and see how much of a wild life she accepts and is happy with.

Please keep sharing. We would really love to have the works complete by the spring ready for our busy season. Last year we had in excess of 150 hedgehogs at one time and would like to be able to continue with more room and equipment with complete use of our outside space 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

She was found approaching a main road today. On examination she has a bit of an issue with one of her eyes but other than that all test are clear. She’s an older girl and will receive a little TLC and attention to that eye before release

Hello Little Bobo!
One of our new arrivals today from Broadway Veterinary Group. She had some nasty capillaria in her p**p that we have treated and she’s now all snuggled on her heat mat with her supper 🌺

Please share…… 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

We have launched this fundraiser as we have decided that we really could do with a little (lot) more room! Anyone that has visited us can see that we struggle with so many residents in our care. This fundraiser is to add a second cabin to enable us to care for more hedgehogs and use the additional space for our cages, ICU area & supplies etc.
We also have a lot of outside space that we can now utilise and create pre-release areas for our hedgehogs that need to build up strength / muscle or just cannot cope with the stress of being caged for their duration with us.
A donation no matter how small all helps alonf with sharing this post 🙏🏼

This write up is worth sharing everywhere! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
It happens all of the time to each and every rescue. We have so many come in that ‘seemed fine for a day or two’. We can’t stress enough that any hedgehog that needs rescue, needs rescue immediately.

Rescue groups are urging people not to attempt to nurse sick and injured hedgehogs back to health.

This is Elsa, she came in tonight with lovely Jenny Attwood. As you can see Elsa is shy! But we're showing you this picture because she looks deliberately marked with blue on her bottom. It's only visible when she's picked up so she may have someone out there who will be worried when they don't see her in their garden. If you recognise her markings we're sorry if we've got her name wrong but please know that when's she's bigger and healthy, and the weather is warmer she'll be back on her patch to live her best life. We sometimes mark hedgehogs in rescue but we definitely didn't make this blue patch and haven't seen Elsa before.

Sorry for being so quiet on here over Christmas. The dreaded sickness bug got me (Jo) and I’ve been on the sofa for a week! Everyone at Dotties has been absolutely amazing and every shift has been covered. With the addition of Rosie Fisher heading in EVERY DAY over Christmas as well as regular cover I’m a little speechless!

We have now got a little low on dry and wet food. If anyone is abpe to help us we would be really grateful. We are also low on newspapers if anyone has any please? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Herne Bay Pet Shop also take orders over the phone and deliver.

Poor little Olive. She has a nasty wound around her eye that’s going to take a while to heal. Her eye is in there luckily! One of her rear legs is questionable but we are on it 🥰

About Us.... and how you can help....

We started Dottie’s in July 2019 following Spikes Hedgehog Sanctuary announcing that they were retiring. We already looked after two blind hedgehogs for Mary and stepped forward for training to continue with her amazing work.

We are now running our hospital that is generally full to bursting nursing these little creatures back to health to be released where they belong. We are getting busier and busier as we get known more widely with local people and veterinary practices.

Dottie’s Little Hog Hospital along with Retreat into Wonderland CIC are run by us, Jo & Jen, along with the kindness of donations and fund raisers.

If you would like to help us we have a wish list that runs alongside our animal sanctuary ‘Retreat into Wonderland’ that lists everyday items that we need...
