😼Something all cat owners should know about is feline tooth resorption (FORLs)!
FORLs (Feline Otodontoclastic Resorptive Lesions) are lesions which can develop on a cat’s 🦷tooth, causing the tooth to be re-absorbed from the inside out, which is a painful process. It is not fully understood why cats develop these lesions, but we know that it tends to happen in cats over the age of 5, and can affect up to 40% of cats. Once a cat has had an FORL they are likely to get another.

As cats are prey animals, as well as predators, they innately hide signs of pain.😿 So unfortunately the most common sign of a FORL is no sign at all, so it is imperative that your vet examines your cat’s teeth at their yearly booster, to look for lesions on your cat’s teeth.

However, listed below are some the signs they might show at home if they have a FORL:
🐾Dropping dry biscuits out of their mouth when eating
🐾Preferring to eat on one side of their mouth
🐾A change in food preference from dry to wet
🐾Excess salivation or blood in saliva
🐾Pawing at their mouth
🐾Change in behaviour, i.e. more withdrawn than normal, change in habits
If your cat will tolerate examination of their mouth at home, have a look for any pink gum inflammation which has extended to the tooth, check whether there seems to be more tartar on one side of their mouth, and whether any teeth are newly missing.
❗️If you notice any of these signs, do not delay in seeking treatment as your cat could well be suffering in silence.
👩‍⚕️The treatment for FORLs is removal of the tooth under general anaesthesia. This procedure should be covered under most insurance policies as it is unpreventable (but it is always best to check when taking out a policy!).

🐱Bruno is a very clever boy weighing himself for us!🤩
As many of you are aware, we are unfortunately unable to see pets for their normal monthly puppy and kitten checks. We don’t want them to miss out on their important parasite treatment, so we ask that you please weigh your pet at home and let us know so that we can dispense the correct medication.💊✅
Now, we don’t expect everyone’s pet to sit on the scales like Bruno!😄 Often the easiest way to weigh small animals is to get on the scales yourself (sorry!) holding them in your arms, then weigh yourself separately and calculate the difference.
👩‍⚕️We will always ensure that we are available to provide advice and any medication needed throughout lockdown. Please call us on ☎️01932 220768☎️ to discuss what might be required for your pet.

Covid 19 update: We’re still open despite the 3rd National Lockdown but this is a very serious public health crisis. The new variant is reported to be highly transmissible and the UK is at alert level 5, which means there is a material risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed. Therefore, the veterinary profession is being urged, with each practice being part of its community, to be leading by example - it is imperative to be doing everything we can to stop the spread of the virus.

This means we must only undertake work that is essential for animal health & welfare. Our governing bodies, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the British Veterinary Association have produced new guidance to help us determine what care we should be providing in the context of the very strong ‘stay at home’ message to reduce the risk of and spread of COVID-19 and its new variant. This means that we cannot continue to maintain business as usual and unfortunately we must reassess our caseload whilst ensuring all safety measures in light of the new variant.

We will always continue to see urgent and emergency cases as quickly as possible but will assess every case on an individual basis, regarding your pet’s healthcare needs. It does mean that we may need to delay some healthcare services - such as vaccinations and neuterings — unless deemed appropriate by the team. Non-essential veterinary care will need to be delayed until after the Lockdown.

In the first instance, we will - to the best of our ability - provide healthcare and veterinary advice (including repeat prescriptions of some ongoing medications) by telephone and where possible, by video call. If we deem it necessary for you to visit us in practice, so we can examine and treat your pet in person, we kindly ask that you stick to the national guidelines when travelling and please wear a face covering at all times at the practice.

We continue to practise a ‘closed door’ policy, asking you to ensure strict social distancing and please stay in your cars and call us to say you have arrived. Please let us know your car make, colour and registration number - and where you are parked - so we can easily find you. The team wear personal protective equipment and you will be advised of any changes to our protocols before your visit.

Many thanks for your understanding!

Missing cat - Please share this post far and wide for one of our clients who is desperately missing their beloved cat, Guinness, the Maine Coon😿

💥Top tips for keeping your pets safe and calm this evening:
🐶Dogs - walk them well before sunset and feed them before it gets dark, as they may refuse food if they are frightened.
🐱Cats - ideally shut them in once it gets dark, if this is something your cat is used to. Allow cats and dogs to hide if they want to, without being disturbed.
🐰Rabbits & guinea pigs - if you are able to bring them inside safely, please do. Otherwise cover their hutch with thick blankets to muffle sounds, allowing for proper ventilation.

💥Remember that it is ok to comfort your pets if they are frightened and seeking your attention.
💥Have yummy treats on hand as a distraction.
💥Turn up the tv or radio turned up to disguise the bangs & keeps windows closed.
💥It is best to ignore the fireworks yourself. Try to appear calm and positive so that your pets are reassured.

02/11/2020

Veterinary practices are deemed essential businesses and therefore during the 2nd National Lockdown, we are going to try our best to remain open, subject to our team not being affected. As a result, we hope we can maintain our availability to our clients Monday to Friday 9am until 6pm at our Hersham, Cobham and Shepperton branches, and at Hersham 9am to 1pm each Saturday. We will continue to balance the need to work in COVID-safe ways (to protect our clients and our team), with our responsibility to look after all our pets’ health & welfare, whilst adhering to the advice of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (https://animalowners.rcvs.org.uk/help-and-advice/) and the British Veterinary Association (https://www.bva.co.uk/coronavirus/coronavirus-advice-for-animal-owners/) in providing essential veterinary services and that of the overall message of the National Lockdown to stay at home. Therefore, we will always see urgent and emergency cases as quickly as possible and currently we will assess every case on an individual basis, regarding your pet’s healthcare needs and are able to see:
Most Vaccinations - but some delays may be unavoidable until after the Lockdown
Most Neuterings (castrations & spays) - particularly if there is a behavioural benefit

We continue to practise a ‘closed door’ policy at each branch, asking you to ensure strict social distancing and please stay in your cars and call us to say you have arrived. Please let us know your car make, colour and registration number so we can easily find you. We request that you always wear a face covering so we can collect your pets in a safe, socially distanced manner. We will continue to use remote consultations (telephone/video call) for other cases, including repeat prescriptions of some ongoing medications. We have safeguarding measures in place to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19 and wear personal protective equipment. We will advise you of any changes to our protocols before any visit.

Our Story

Beech House Vets is a proudly independent, family-owned practice, with its history dating back to the 1870's- owned by only two families during this time, with four branches - Hersham, Cobham, Thames Ditton and Shepperton.

We believe passionately that veterinary care should not just be there for health problems and emergencies but more positively by centring on ongoing health. We want all of our pets to lead happy and healthy lives and we know that this is best achieved through building a long-term relationship with our clients - getting to know their pets - focussing on wellbeing, good nutrition and everyday preventative care. If this is what you're looking for, do please pop in or give us a call, we'd love to hear from you!
