Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare We are a registered independent charity based in Hersham, Surrey devoted to the caring for and homing

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare is devoted to caring for retired racing greyhounds and finding them homes. We are self-funding and rely on the kindness and generosity of our supporters and the general public. We care for approximately 50-60 greyhounds at our kennels in Hersham, with the majority of these gifted onto us by their owners or trainers once their racing days are over. However, when necessary

we do step in and help those less fortunate greyhounds who are at risk, as and when we are able. We take in all colours and personalities regardless of their homing chances. We operate a β€˜no destruction’ policy, which means that no greyhound will be put to sleep except on health grounds when there is no other option. For those greyhounds with long term medical or behavioural issues we have The Sanctuary – their home for as long as they need it. We actively promote the fact that greyhounds make wonderful pets and adapt to life after racing very well.

😍 Affectionate, Gentle Manny 😍

Sophi has created some great videos of some of the greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes. Sophi writes:

β€œYoung, 2 year old Manny seems such a delightful boy. He was only new into kennels, yet seemed comfortable meeting new people and as you'll see, very loving and content, with a gentle energy. Boys can often wait longer for homes, yet are just as loving and deserving of a home, so do keep an open mind. Greyhounds make wonderful pets and only need about 2 x 30 minutes walking a day. Down at the kennels we are running short of some everyday essential supplies.

πŸ₯« Hill's Prescription Diet Canine I/D Low Fat Dog Digestive Health Food
β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή K-Soft Bandage Wadding
πŸ—‘οΈ Black bin bags

We know in particular that the I/D Low Fat food is expensive but this is much needed for some of the hounds who may from time to time suffer from sensitive or upset tummies.

If anyone is able to donate some for delivery it would be much appreciated. ❀️

You can buy this stuff easily from our Amazon wish list (linked below), or have things delivered to us at:

😍 Cuddly, Inquisitive Magic 😍

Sophi has created some great videos of some of the greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes. She writes:

β€œYoung, 2 year old Magic seems a wonderfully affectionate, inquisitive and confident boy. He was happy coming up to people and having a fuss, loved cuddles from his walker, who he’d met for the first time. And enjoyed looking around here and there, which is always a great sign of being a happy, inquisitive lad. Boys often wait longer for homes, as people mostly ask for girls – maybe a perception of size, but greyhounds have lived all their lives in a small kennel, so a bigger hound doesn’t necessarily need more space and as you see here, is just as loving and deserving. Keep an open mind and look more for temperament and match 2 way with your lifestyle.” Magic’s profile: https://www.hershamhounds.org.uk/homeless-hounds/magic-born-november-2022/

Why stopping shouldn't be a showstopper

This video was put together with tips from various greyhound parents.

Freezing/stopping is not uncommon in dogs as a fear reaction or need to pause to take stock. Hounds with gorgeous temperaments can be overlooked at kennels as a result, yet it can often massively reduce after they've built trust with you - or go altogether. This video shows why it wasn't a showstopper for parents whose greys used to stop and gives tips they used, whether you're homing or walking at kennels. Greyhounds are lovely, gentle beings and all deserve and thrive in loving, supportive homes.

Kennel hound Leo's holiday in Scotland

Volunteers Jan and Graham took 8 year old kennel hound Leo, who is looking for a home - on holiday to Scotland for Christmas. This video shows how he got on, where he went, walked and stayed. Leo was in a home for some years but been in kennels for a while now and overlooked πŸ™ and it would be lovely to share him to find his home.

😍 Lovely, sweet Fleur 😍

Sophi has created some great videos of some of the greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes. Sophi writes:

"Fleur is a beautiful, sweet girl, who was lovely with my boy and very affectionate. Like many greyhounds, she has a gentle nature and they make great pets, adapting well after racing. Thousands need homes each year, and you can see more videos and profiles on the hershamhounds website. You'll see how lovely they are and can go to kennels to walk and meet them."

😍 Sweet, affectionate Milly 😍

Sophi has created some great videos of some of the greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes. Sophi writes:

"Milly seems such a sweet, gentle girl. She was new in to kennels and getting used to things. She was so lovely and happy to have a gentle fuss. She also has the most gorgeous ears. Greyhounds are a generally gentle, unassuming breed that are not in your face dogs. They only need 2 x 30 mins a day walks and thousands need homes each year in the UK."

😍 Calm, diddy Kimmie 😍

Sophi has created some great videos of some of the greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes. Sophi writes:

"Kimmie is a sweet, small girl. She was all round lovely. Came up for a fuss, comfortable with people, my boy, even horses and more - as you'll see in this video which shows how good natured greyhounds are. They make the most wonderful pets and don't need lots of walks - just 2 x30 minutes a day."

😍 Sweet, gentle Gabriel 😍

Sophi has created some great videos of some of the greyhounds that are looking for their forever homes. Sophi writes:

"Gabriel seems such a sweet natured, gentle boy. He enjoyed a fuss from his walkers and walked really easily. Keep an open mind about gender, as it's about temperament and fit with your lifestyle that matters. These videos give a glimpse of each greyhound at the kennels, but their true personalities shine over time once relaxed in a loving home."

25TH DECEMBER 2024
In the run up to Christmas, we decided to have our own Advent Calendar to showcase our wonderful homeless hounds. As it is Christmas Day, we planned to give our long time kennel hound, Ronald, the most important day, in the Advent Calendar in the hope this may help his homing opportunitoes as he has been overlooked for homing for more than 2 years now. Ronald has always been a fun, loving hound who just adores people. Sadly, he was a nightmare to walk for a good year and a half and was apparently difficult to parade at the track for the same reason too. This meant socialising him was difficuit as he was too far ahead of the walker trying to manage him. We engaged dog behaviourist, Roger Mugford, to see if we could improve his walks for him so that he couid enjoy getting out and about and be more likely to be improved for people looking to potentially home him. He pulled.so hard for so long, walkers got worried they had harmed him as he was exhausted and almost choking. The use of a head halti was a gamechanger for Ronald and he is so much better on walks and acrually enjoying them for the first tine, instead of getting overwhelmed an worried about meeting other breeds more manageable on walks and less hyper & reactive with other dogs. The best news is, just as his Calendar day was approaching a couple of days ago, an experienced greyhound couple asked to meet Ronald and are now taking him on a hometrial in a few days. Finger's crossed 2024 turns into Ronald's lucky year.

πŸ—πŸŽ„πŸ½οΈ Special Christmas Lunches for the Hounds! πŸ½οΈπŸŽ„πŸ—

Thank you so much to all of our lovely volunteers who have been cooking and dropping off Christmas treats for the kennel hounds since the weekend. β™₯

The equivalent of over 50 whole roast chickens and plenty of sausages and veg have been cooked and donated - even some sprouts and carrots in there! They all had a lovely walk (or two) this morning and have now all enjoyed their festive dinner of chicken, sausages, Yorkshire puds, carrots, sprouts, broccoli and peas (their dinner's better than ours!😍)

All the bowls came back licked clean and they will all go to sleep tonight with full tummies, knowing they are all blessed and lovedπŸ’– xx (ps. There's enough left over for the same again tomorrow!πŸ€—).

Thanks also to all the volunteer walkers today who made sure the hounds got out, and Sharon Lucy Wells running the caff to keep everyone supplied with bacron rolls and hot beverages.

Special thanks to Stella Murphy for coordinating all of this to make sure the hounds in kennels all get a nice treat for their Christmas day lunch, and Linda Simmons and Alan Tiller for helping dish up their meals today. We were bowled over by the response to Stella's request.

You are all so kind and thoughtful - especially at such a busy time.

What a Fabulous Christmas dinner the homeless hounds have had. Truly much appreciated ❀️

A CHRISTMAS WISH
On behalf of Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare, we wish all our supporters and hounds everywhere a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
A huge thank you for all you do to help us help the hounds, including making up such amazing Christmas dinners for our homeless hounds. Thank you all for the donationfs, donated wishlist goods, all your lovely cards and the treats for the hounds and kennel staff.
We could not do what we do without your help and support and without the hardworking staff at the
1))]kennels who always go ⁡above and beyond to help the hounds. Kennel assistant, Josh Darvill, has made Christmas stockings filled with special treats for every hound and Holly Staples has bought brand new fleecy Christmas blankets for every homeless hound to feel cosy and special.
We have an amazingly kind and generous community who are always looking to help us in whatever way you can. Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart. Carol xx

24TH DECEMBER 2024
In the run up to Christmas, we decided to have our own Advent Calendar to showcase our wonderful homeless hounds. As it is Christmas Eve, we decided to feature 2 gorrgeous hounds, Reggie & Sweetie. 3 year old black hound, Reggie and 4 year old Sweetie are our 24th December hounds in our WGW Advent Calendar. Reggie, like his Kray litter brother , Ronnie, did not race and was in a kennel that was closing down and so, was not handled much. He is therefore rather skittish and lacking in confidence, though he does so want to please. He needs a quiet home, or with older teenagers and experienced hound folk and other dog company to learn from. Sweetie is a petite black girl who has a cheeky nature and loves her walks at kennels. She needs a bit of confidence building but seems fine with other dogs and certainly lives up to her name! Let's hope Reggie and Sweetie find their forever homes in 2025.
