It’s official, it’s our first rehoming of 2024 is coming up on Saturday 9th March at Hertford Collection Point, and the girls will be coming from one of our lovely farms who free range them.

If you’ve not already booked to rehome some girls, then go to: www.freshstartforhens.co.uk and complete the form.

Even if you can’t rehome next month (or even if you aren't near Hertford), please share our post as the more shares, the more potential re-homers we reach.

Looking forward to seeing all of you who have already reserved their girls in just over a month to go ... not long now!!

In the meantime, here's a picture at our last rehoming of 2023, when we had the lovely Rocky looking incredibly proud to be taking care of the girls during the rehoming 😁

08/06/2023

After a fabulous rehoming in May, with the special treat of this lovely little cockerel joining the girls and finding a great new home, our next rehoming will be on 19th August.

That’s more than enough time to register for some lovely new girls to join your flock or to decide to start keeping hens and get set up in time.

If that’s too late in the year for you, then we have many other rehomes going on across the country across the summer. Just head over to www.freshstartforhens.co.uk to check out our rehoming dates and locations near you.

Many thanks to all our re-homers from last month and also to our fantastic farm crews, drivers and admin team helping to make it all happen! 😊

Also, please keep sending through your update pictures of how your lovely girls (and boys) are settling in at their new forever homes going forward – we love seeing how they are all enjoying their new found freedom.

Our next rehoming of 2023 is just under a month away ... on 20th May at Hertford Collection Point!!

Now that the Avian Flu restrictions have been lifted, there’s even more reason to book some girls to rehome.

If you’ve not already booked to rehome some girls, then go to: www.freshstartforhens.co.uk and complete the form. Even if you can’t rehome next month, please share our post as the more shares, the more potential re-homers we reach 😊.

Don’t worry if you’re not near to Hertford, but want to rehome some hens, as there are loads of other collection points all over the country – so pop over to the website and you should find one near to you.

Another beautiful sunny day of re-homing here in Hertford matched only by some beautiful girls from The Macs Farm – an organic farm in Cornwall who we've re-homed from before. These girls are Hy-line brown hens and some lovely girls indeed.

Lovely to meet all our new re-homers and also some familiar faces coming back to re-home again 😊 … enjoy your new girls this weekend and for many weekends to come ... and please let us know how they are getting on in their forever homes.

Special thanks to Kim & Holly for all their help unloading, catching and chatting to our re-homers and of course to Mark E for driving the girls all that way to us from Cornwall 😊

A picture of one of the cheeky / inquisitive girls – shortly after which she decided toes in sandals were fair game!

Even if you can’t rehome on either of our two next dates, please share our post as the more shares, the more potential re-homers we reach 😊.

We’ve just added another re-homing date on 2nd July (which is also apparently World UFO Day!!). So instead of, or as well as, looking for some little aliens why not rescue some lovely little hens? Go on, you know you want to !!😊

Reservations are open for the 2nd July, and our earlier re-homing on 18th June, via the website www.freshstartforhens.co.uk

If neither of these dates work, or if you are located elsewhere in the UK, we have numerous other re-homing dates and collection points across the country.

Just pop over to our website to see if there’s one near you at: https://freshstartforhens.co.uk/collection-points/

If you're not ready to re-home some lovely hens just yet, please share our post so we can reach as many potential re-homers as possible.

Another lovely weekend re-homing for Fresh Start For Hens – especially as we had the pleasure of some “overnighters” due to logistical reasons.

Half of our overnighters got the hang of taking themselves to bed (in photo), the other half (in a separate coop & run) decided they liked the fresh air soooo much, they decided they wanted to stay out - laying under the stars!! :-)

Most of the girls decided their first full day of freedom warranted some serious sunbathing - that is apart from one noisy miss who decided an urgent egg was needed instead (hence the racket in the video!).

We hope they’re all settling into their forever homes, and many thanks to our re-homers and also the fantastic Zena Edser for her help on re-homing day!

Next re-homing is mid-June … so if you’re looking to re-home some hens, please register early on the Fresh Start For Hens website https://freshstartforhens.co.uk/01-registration-form/

If you're not local to Hertford, we have many more collection points across the UK - so have a look to see if there's one near you.

If you are not looking to re-home just now, please share with your contacts, as sharing really helps us find homes for all the girls :-)

The girls have arrived for re-homing today - somewhat heavier than usual which is great news for their future owners. They are all having a good drink, rest, scratch and the occasional sun bathe in between showers prior to their re-homers coming to pick them up.

Looking forward to meeting all our re-homers today!😁

Pretty soon girls you’ll be off on your last little journey to your forever homes!!

For any of you in doubt about the rule changes effective as of Monday, here's a useful link to the Animal and Plant Health Agency article (with a useful interactive map to check you don't fall within one of the 3 km Protection Zones)

Roll on Monday!!

Poultry and other captive birds can be let outside from 2nd May 2022 unless you are within a 3 km Protection Zone. But there are some vital preparations you must make before you let your birds out. See our press notice for full details https://www.gov.uk/government/news/bird-flu-latest-situation-avian-influenza-prevention-zone-declared-across-great-britain

You can check if you fall within a 3 km Protection Zone by visiting our interactive map and entering your postcode. https://defra.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8cb1883eda5547c6b91b5d5e6aeba90d

If you fall within a 3 km Protection Zone birds must remain housed.

Although the requirement to house your birds is ending for most keepers, the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone remains in place. This means you must continue to practise strong biosecurity, as there is still a risk your birds could catch . See our biosecurity guidehttps://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1064069/biosecurity-poultry-guide.pdf

29/04/2022

Our 7th May rehoming date is live on the Fresh Start For Hens website https://freshstartforhens.co.uk/01-registration-form/ and we are accepting reservations. Hertford collection point will be open! 😊🐓
.. and if that wasn’t enough good news, APHA announced earlier this week the end of chicken ‘flockdown’ – so all of our girls will be allowed back out to free range again from 2nd May (unless you are in a 3km protection zone).

So there really is no better time to give a lovely retirement to some well deserving hens.

If you have room in your coop, or are a first timer looking to keep hens for pets (with the added benefit of their lovely eggs!!), please visit the website www.freshstartforhens.co.uk and head to the reserve hens page to reserve your girls today!

Go on you know you want to!!! 🐓😊🐓

If you’re not ready to re-home any hens at this point in time, please share our post - sharing really does help with our rehoming efforts (so thank you in advance! 😊).

Hertford Fresh Start For Hens will be rehoming Ducks (yes, you read that correctly DUCKS) on Sunday 27th March!

If you would like to reserve some ducks to add to your flock, or start a new flock, you can visit the website https://freshstartforhens.co.uk/27-registration-form/ and add a note requesting ducks.

Details:

We have just agreed to take on a HUGE flock (1,000+) of egg laying ducks … just in time for Mothers Day (Sunday 27th March in case you’ve forgotten!!😊). The ducks will be around two years old and at the end of their commercial lay, but with many more years of life to live and egg laying to do.

We have yet to confirm all of the collection points that they will be available from, but you can reserve through the website, just as you do for hens. Please just add a note at the end that you are interested in ducks, and we will do our best to find something relatively local to you.

??? Not had ducks before and have questions about re-homing ducks? … If so, please e-mail [email protected] and we’ll do our best to answer them.
