11/11/2024

We still do our own out-of-hours on site, which is pretty unusual in the current world.

This does of course cost more, and this video explains some of the reasons why.

Despite the extra challenges this brings our teams we believe in our 24-7 service we continue to keep our costs as low as possible without compromising standards.

Sanderson Vet is committed to embracing traditional family values with excellent clinical care from a whole team committed to 24 hour care.

We love a good feel good weekend story! Thanks Dogs Go - Training Academy & Dog Daycare for the kind words!

As many of you will know from our Facebook Group Louie aka my love aka the sweetest Doberman ever (my niece has said are the females not called Dober-ladies šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤£) nearly died. šŸ˜¢

However, despite the odds- he survived. That is entirely down to Sanderson Vet - this is his story.

It all started months ago, when Louie did what no dog of mine has ever done before, which was swallow a huge chunk of rubber - what we think was a tennis ball. šŸŽ¾
Cue an operation on his intestines to remove it and subsequent healing. Slight complications with healing due to how his body reacted the to initial op meant he needed another operation. It was just awful. Obviously this happened outside of normal working hours - but this Vet doesnā€™t open ā€˜normalā€™ opening hours and has a 24h animal hospital, so it didnā€™t matter. Thank God.

Roll on a few months later and Louie showed the same symptoms. šŸ˜– Sadly, there was another foreign body, again in his digestive tract and cue another operation. This was with everyone keeping him away from rubber things and balls! We were devastated.

Another operation, this time more complicated and the recovery slower. šŸ˜¢ Louie is a quick dog - there are no second chances with him - if you drop something, it is in his mouth. Cue a life of muzzles, lead walks and the tidiest house you ever saw. (We canā€™t leave anything, anywhere.)

Long story short, despite our best efforts Louie months later, showed signs of sickness. The operations had taken their toll on his little body. He was suffering from intestinal adhesions, scar tissue, inflammation, his bowl had stopped functioning properly. The weight was falling off him. He lost his Louie spirit. šŸ˜Ÿ

Over two stays, Louie must have spent maybe 13 days in Sandersonā€™s hospital. We missed him like crazy and it was a total roller coaster of emotion. The poor Vetā€™s dealt with tears, lots of questions (which letā€™s face it, we couldnā€™t understand their answers to properly as we arenā€™t medical) and we barely slept. At one point, his odds were so bad, we discussed PTS. (I am crying as I type this.) One of the Vet team felt more like a therapist to me.šŸ˜¢ The odds where NOT in his favour.

HOWEVER. The incredible Vets tried something. I wonā€™t attempt to describe as I will absolutely get something wrong but there where risks involved - they weighed them up and took swift action.
They saved his life.

I just want to thank Sanderson Vet for their incredible vet treatment, support, commitment to excellence, facilities, team and for putting up with me crying down the phone. I recommend you to everyone, always have and always will. Special mention to: Rui šŸ’š (in the pic) Rosie and Richard. The whole team honestly were loving, kind and so patient with me and Louie.

You saved my boy and I am forever grateful. šŸ™šŸ»

PS - Did Louie enjoy his time at the hospital? Probably not BUT everytime we walk past Sandersonā€™s door, he pulls me in and is so happy to see everyone. As am I. šŸ„¹

Richard is currently on the final day of a 3 day educational trip at the Southern European Veterinary Conference ensuring our ā€˜thrombosisā€™ guidelines are as up to date as possible.

If Carlsberg did vetsā€¦

Have you met our excellent GP team? We donā€™t think there is a better, more dedicated team with this much experience and such a passion for client care!

Lucia

Lucia graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2016. She is a vetGDP Supervisor for mentoring new graduates. Prior to joining us she spent her whole career in North Wales and prides herself on providing compassionate veterinary care and building relationships with clients. Outside of work she enjoys hiking and camping and is an avid traveller having visited every continent on Earth!

Rui

Rui graduated from Lisbon University, Portugal in 2017, having completed an externship at Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. He spent much of his childhood in the UK, and after 5 years working in Wales he joined the team, excited to be part of an independent practice. He recently passed his certificate in diagnostic imaging (X-Rays, ultrasound, endoscopy and CT). He enjoys imaging as it allows a non-invasive approach to reaching a diagnosis. Rui is an OV (Official Veterinarian) for issuing of travel documents.

Alex

Alex graduated from the University of Bristol in 2021. After working in a large first opinion and referral hospital in Bristol after graduating she decided to return home to the Wirral. She has a particular interest in small animal medicine cases, enjoying investigating and setting plans in place for management of chronic issues such as vomiting. Alex is an OV (Official Veterinarian) for issuing of travel documents. She is a music lover with a collection of vinyl records and is an avid Evertonian but we donā€™t hold that against her too much!

Richard

Richard graduated in 2009 from The University of Liverpool. He is an RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner which is an official recognition of a vets particular knowledge and skills in their designated field. He is a VetGDP Supervisor for mentoring new graduates in the profession. He is the practice Rabbit Advocate.

A recognised Official Veterinarian (OV) he is able to issue travel documentation. He holds the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (certAVP) in Small Animal Practice, and also holds a Graduate Diploma in Law.

He is due to submit his caselogs after completing his Certificate in Small Animal Surgery and his Advanced Certificate in Soft Tissue Surgery training.

Such a team is worth its weight in gold, with reassuring levels of experience keeping your pets safe. Building a team of experience has been a key aim for us based on your feedback.

Stay tuned to meet our consultant vets, emergency vets and Locumā€™s, plus our nurses and the rest of the team soon!

Whilst we have been refurbishing we thought we would take the opportunity to get the team together for a staff event looking at Pet Wellness and how we can work together to improve Preventative Care.

Thanks to IDEXX for coming and giving some information this morning and also thanks to Kri Kri Greek Taverna for providing an incredible lunch to keep the staff fed!

Regular CPD progression and investment in our team is really important to keep us at the forefront of excellent community based clinical care!
