Myth: Cats Love Milk

Of course, all cats love a saucer of milk, right? Well, the truth is that they don’t need it. In fact, cow’s milk can often cause an upset stomach as many cats become lactose intolerant after weaning; they don’t produce the right enzymes required to digest it.

If they’ve always had cow’s milk then they may have kept the ability to digest it, but in general, it’s always better to give them lactose-free milk. They don’t need milk to survive though, past kittenhood, and just plain water is fine and better for their weight.

Jesse came into the surgery lately with a very sore paw. X-rays revealed that Jesse had broken her metacarpal bones in her left paw!

Jack decided a splint and plenty of rest will be what the doctor orders, and Jesse is well on her way to making a good recovery!

Kelsey picked the perfect bandage for the adorable Jesse, as all border terrier owners know the breed often think they are the size of tigers and just as brave! (Or is that just my border terrier? 😂.. )

Send some love Jesse's way to help her recover!

With Halloween behind us, we were looking into the history of black cats. Sadly, black cats are the most common colour of cat found in shelters and often the "bad luck" tag that has followed them through history is a big reason why!

How many of these black cat historic facts do you know?

Ancient Egypt: Black cats were honored because of their resemblance to the cat goddess Bastet.

Scotland: Black cats can represent prosperity, and some believe that a strange black cat visiting your home is a sign of good fortune.

Japan: Black cats are considered lucky, and some people keep black cat keyrings or other trinkets as good luck charms. Japan also has a café dedicated to black cats.

United States: Some people in the U.S. are superstitious about black cats and believe they bring bad luck. However, National Black Cat Day is celebrated on October 27, four days before Halloween, to help dispel these myths

Our Monday myth busting this week is Halloween themed! 🎃

🔍Black cats are unlucky 🔍

Not only is this completely untrue, it actually leads to quite a sad statistic.

Black cats are the most commonly found cats in animal charities around the world. History has portrayed black cats as being unlucky, or a witches choice of pet, or a bringer of misfortune.

We much prefer the Welsh folklore take on black cats. Welsh folklore depicts black cats would bring luck to a home and could even be a reliable weather predictor!

All we know is that black cats are as wonderful as any other cat and this is myth that needs well and truly busted! 🐈‍⬛

Vaccinations are important. 💉

Not only do they prevent serious illnesses but they can help avoid costly treatment. You will often hear a vet say "prevention is better than cure". A booster vaccination is a yearly injection and your pet will also receive a health check.

Our Well Pet Club has nearly 1,800 members and the booster vaccination is part of the health plan!

GARLIC IS AN EXCELLENT REMEDY FOR FLEAS AND TICKS

Garlic is one of the best ways – allegedly – to stop a vampire but it is certainly NOT an effective flea and tick treatment for dogs. Unfortunately, this is a myth that is widely circulated on the internet.

Not only will garlic have zero effect in ridding fleas and ticks from your dog, but garlic has also been known to cause hemolytic anemia. Although relatively rare, this condition occurs when the body attacks and destroys its red blood cells. This is bad.

Treatment for this condition is VERY expensive and generally requires several days of hospitalization with frequent blood transfusions. Not all dogs who eat garlic will suffer from this condition, but if you feed your pet garlic, you’re unnecessarily risking your dog’s health.

Meet 10 week old Howl

We recently welcomed Howl to the surgery and the eagle eyed among you may notice he looks very similar to another dog we recently saw.

Well done if so - he is the brother of Quintin who we saw a few weeks back! They look so alike, and are both lovely dogs!
