💡 Quick Tip Thursday 💡

REWARD THE GOOD STUFF! ⭐️

Are you rewarding the good stuff when you aren’t formally “training”?

The more reward history that a behaviour has behind it, the more likely it is that your dog will offer that behaviour more often. 🐶

Start rewarding your dog all of the time, whenever they offer you a behaviour that you want! 👀

This will build up their reward history much more quickly than just rewarding your dog during training sessions. That behaviour you want to see more often will then be offered much more often! 👀

This applies to any behaviours;

▫️Default sits while you’re eating 👏🏻

▪️Not jumping up on the end of a recall ⭐️

▫️Sitting when you enter the house instead of charging at you 👍🏼

▪️Offering a check in when off lead on walks 👏🏻

▫️Waiting for you to let them up onto the sofa ⭐️

▪️Looking at another dog but deciding not to run over to play 👍🏼

🐾 Think of some good behaviours that your dog offers you voluntarily and let me know what you’re going to start rewarding 🐾

🎾 Recommended Equipment 🎾

The world of dog training is a minefield so here’s one way of making it slightly easier for you, here’s the equipment we recommend along with some helpful info on where to buy! 🦮

▫️Reinforcer - I love to use a ball or tuggy as a reinforcer as it needs to be something worth while, something SUPER AMAZING & something your dog enjoys. My favourite tugs are from or but there are loads on the market (I’d always go real over faux fur as well). 🎾

▪️Double ended lead - stock some of the fabulous Halti leads that you can make longer or shorter because of that double ended clip! 🦮

▫️Longline - This is an absolute essential in recall training! 10m is more than enough but you can get shorter ones. do great biothane ones or Amazon is a good place to find them as well! 🐾

▪️Flat collar - I strongly advise against choke, nightingale or shock collars! Would you want to be made to do something just to avoid pain? 🐶

▫️Y shaped harness - Fabulous for teaching your dog to walk nicely on a lead and is much nicely for your dog than a collar if they’re a keen puller! 🐕‍🦺

▪️Yummy treats - High value food rewards are a must for training outdoors, the more distracting the environment the higher value the food rewards will need to be to be “worth it”. do some great flavoured dog pate that can be chopped up into bite size rewards! 🍗

💡Quick Tip Thursday 💡

Dog training is not a straight forward journey - there’s up, there’s downs, there’s even backflips!

Every Thursday I’ll share with you a cheeky tip to help you along that rollercoaster ride of dog ownership and training 🎢

Getting annoyed or frustrated because your dog isn’t doing what you’ve asked isn’t going to get them to do it any quicker, all it’ll do is damage your relationship ❤️‍🩹

Instead, think about why they don’t understand…

▫️Do they know the cue?

▪️Were they paying attention when you asked?

▫️Is your body language clear?

▪️Have you increased your criteria too quickly?

There’s many reasons that your training might not be going to plan. Next time you’re getting frustrated step back for a minute and ask yourself “why is this not going well” - your dog will thank you for it!

🐾 ⭐️ Top Tips For Success ⭐️ 🐾

▫️Training the dog in front of you - easily said but not so easily done! Especially if the others surrounding you seem to be doing ‘better’. All that happens if you put too much pressure on your dog is that they don’t succeed, communication & cues become unclear and they get confused & frustrated leading to no success.

▫️Don’t dwell on the ‘bad bits’ - if training consisted of win after win after win we wouldn’t be able to see how hard work pays off and how working as a team with your dog to succeed can pay off. ‘Bad bits’ make your training journey spicy, as would say.

▫️Have fun - training is a time for you and your dog to be together, build your bond and make memories.

▫️Set your dog up for success - if your dog doesn’t understand or you rush your progressions they’ll get confused and frustrated. Work with the dog in front of you, even if that means reducing your criteria to make it ‘easier’ for them to get it and then build it up from there. Slow success is betting than no success.

▫️Ask questions - be that person, for your dog’s sake! The more you understand the more you’ll be able to help your dog to do well. No question is a silly question!

Something that I take for granted but is so important - mooching!

What is mooching?…
▪️Can your dog voluntarily check in without being asked?
▪️Does your dog stick close to you without being asked?
▪️Can your dog ignore distractions without being asked?
▪️Does your dog choose you over other dogs, people or the environment?

If the answer to any of the above questions is no, hell no or absolutely not then chances are you don’t have full trust in your dog when they’re off lead!

The ability to mooch in silence with your dog builds your bond, trust & engagement. It’s not just a skill, it’s a way of life.

Do you have a high drive dog?💥

Do you struggle to harness their strong instincts, drives and bred behaviours?

I might be biased but high drive dogs such as; Gundogs, Guard dogs & Sheepdogs make excellent companions and pets if you know how to help them to make the right choices 📚

I give my two Gundogs multiple outlets every single day for the behaviours that they have been bred to love and this helps to make them stress free, happy & trustworthy 🐶

I believe that in order to succeed with your obedience training you must also include lots of outlets for that natural predatory sequence that all dogs have as well as games that channel the behaviours your dog was bred for.

SOCIALISATION WALKS 🐾

Socialisation is such an important part of a dogs life, especially for young pups, but a lot of owners have no idea where to begin 🤯

It’s not all about letting your dog meet EVERY dog and EVERY person that they meet when out on a walk 🥾

Socialisation is much more about the environment and exposing your dog to different sights, sounds and smells. It’s about teaching calmness, manners and neutral or positive responses to external stimuli 🦆🐑🐶

Can you understand your dogs subtle ways of communicating that they’re uncomfortable with a situation? 🚫

Not many people can!

There are so many subtle body language cues that our dogs give us EVERY day. . . It’s just about knowing how to look for them so that you can avoid putting your dogs in a situation that they don’t want to be in 🐶

To understand how a dog feels we need to look at their whole body. When we misread our dogs subtle signs of stress we can create greater stress and anxiety, our dogs then have to resort to more obvious signs of stress such as lunging, barking or even biting.

Engagement is something that I see a lot of my clients struggling with, especially around distractions and in more exciting environments 🌳
