Ever heard of black dog bias? 🤔

Dogs communicate to each other (and us) using minute facial expressions, posture, tail movements and hair erections - those in the dog world are super vigilant and notice these small changes 🔍

However other dogs have a limited range of vision, being colour blind to red and green, making it difficult to recognise and read these minute changes in a black dog’s facial expression 🐕‍🦺

As subtle signals are then sometimes missed another dog may perceive what is actually a friendly black dog inviting them to play as a confrontation and that’s where the trouble begins‼️

How can we prevent black dog bias? Early socialisation is key and exposing young dogs, in a control and positive way, to different breeds to teach them how these dogs communicate 🐶

🦮 Assistance dog in training 🦮

This is Phil 🐶

Phil is an assistance dog and is currently training for his public access assessment on buses 🚌

We’re working on maintaining a comfortable settle for the duration of a journey by slowly increasing the journey length in our sessions.

There’s lots of uncontrollable factors to consider when training on public transport that can interrupt the flow of a session and the progress made 🐶

Phil is fabulous at his job and I’m looking forward to getting this next skill under his belt while working along side

🐶 Your dog is not a robot! 🤖

Have you ever woken up in a foul mood for no reason? Or woken up and just don’t feel like doing much? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well maybe your dog has woken up in that same mood, possibly because they bounce off how you feel. This could be why your training is all going pear shaped one day or why you think your dog is “not listening” 🙄

👩🏼‍⚖️ Dogs are sentient beings , by law since The Animal Welfare (sentience) Bill was passed, and can feel emotions. They can’t be on top form 24/7 365 days a year just like we can’t as their owners!

Think about this next time you think your dog is just trying to wind you up and maybe it’ll strengthen your bond as well as positively impact your training 📚

🐾 Let’s talk enrichment 🐾

Dogs need enrichment & mental stimulation in order to keep their minds busy which helps to improve their quality of life. Enrichment helps to prevent boredom and destructive behaviours as well as building your bond with your dog if it’s something that you can do together! 🐶

Enrichment comes in all shapes and sizes, it’s not one size fits all when it comes to different breeds.

🧠 Mental enrichment games such as puzzles that involve problem solving are fabulous for those intelligent breeds that love to have a busy brain!

🎾 Physical enrichment that involves playing, running or searching are great for those active breeds that need to be doing!

👅 There’s also stress relief enrichment where the dog will get to lick, sniff or chew to help relieve any anxiety or built up stress!

Dogs should be provided with a variety of different enrichments daily, these don’t have to be HUGE tasks they can be simple things to help keep them busy like a stuffed, frozen kong for example or hunting for their breakfast in the garden!

Why teach a ‘touch’ cue? 👋🏻

There’s actually lots of different reasons why this behaviour can be worth teaching…

🐶 It builds a positive association with hands, which could save you a tonne of stress when visiting the vets!

🐾 It can be a way to test if your dog is listening, ready to engage and can cope in the environment that you’re in. If they know the behaviour but can’t perform it have a think why not!

🐶 When working on retrieving I want my dogs to bring the item back to my hand, this cue can be added into the retrieve pattern to help promote that hand delivery!

🐾 It’s fun and enriching!

Tailored sessions based around your dog, progressing at their pace in order to help them succeed 🐶

In a class environment a lot of dogs struggle to cope with the close proximity of all of the distractions. If those classes are done indoors a lot of dogs will then also struggle to contextualise the behaviours learnt to everyday life when out and about 📚

A 1-2-1 session takes away the pressure, from you as well as your dog, of having to keep up and perform around others.

The location of a 1-2-1 with us varies, we want you dogs to do well so we will work somewhere that they can cope before progressing to a more challenging location 🌳

Something that I get asked a lot so let’s clear it up 💭

🐾 A whistle is a cue to ask for a behaviour. For example you might have a recall whistle to tell your dog that you want them to recall or a stop whistle to tell your dog that you want them to stop!

🐾 A clicker is a ‘marker’ or ‘secondary reinforcer’ used to mark the exact moment a desired behaviour is done and to signal that the primary reinforcer (reward) is coming!

🐶 Positive Reinforcement 🐶

This method of teaching/learning associates a behaviour with a positive consequence (rewards) 🥳

The more reinforcement history (rewards) a behaviour has behind it, the more likely that behaviour will be repeated.

You’ve got to be constant with rewarding the behaviours that you like! If the behaviour only sometimes earns the dog a reward it won’t be as ‘worth it’ for the dog to repeat that behaviour 🤔

Rewards don’t always have to be food! Use whatever your dog finds reinforcing;
Food 🧀
Toys 🎾
Physical/verbal praise 🥰

With this method of training your dogs enjoy the learning, they make the good choices on their own and it strengthens your bond because there’s no fear or force involved!

🐾 One of the scariest things as a new puppy owner is unclipping their lead out in public… 🐾

Will they listen? Will they come back? Will they be scared and run away?
