We had a lovely event at the Good & Fair Café this evening. Jo from Applause for Paws Dog Training & Behaviour came along to raise awareness about the connection between pain and behaviour in dogs. Everyone learnt lots and went away with lots to think about.

A big thank you to Beccy Farmer and Snoopy for sending in these photos. Our first LickiMat giveaway winners!

These Yoggie pots are great to fill with wet/raw meats, soaked kibble, bone broth, bits of fruit, etc. You could even put some natural yoghurt or goats milk in and use a gourmet sausage stick as a lolly pop handle to help your dog carry it (once frozen) to a shady spot in the garden. A lovely bit of enrichment and such a great thing to give your dogs in this hot weather.

My review:

We rinsed the bandana under the cold tap and put it on our Labrador, he doesn't generally like things around his neck but after his initial shake he quickly jumped onto the sofa and settled. I only left it on him for 15 minutes and when I took off his neck was cool to the touch. I offered it back to him and he placed his neck back on it so I did it up and he went back to laying on the sofa.

The cooling mat was laid on the floor and he sniffed it, put his paw on it and walked away. We left it there in the lounge for the evening, he ignored it.

The next evening I sat on the floor next to it, he came over and was curious about the mat, he sniffed it and put his paw on it and I gently and calmly praised him. He laid down near to it and slowly made his way onto it, I gave him verbal praises each time he put more of his body onto it. Once he had his whole body on it I cued him to 'settle' (Learnt in puppy training classes, 'Place' can also be used). I sat on the floor with him and gently stroked him to make sure that the mat had time to activate.

He now knows that it cools him down and he actively seeks it out. We keep it in a shady part of the house out of direct sunlight. I would not recommend these for a known chewer and would always suggest that you supervise your dog or puppy initially until you are happy that it won't be chewed in your absence.

We are really looking forward to hosting this event to raise awareness to anyone with a love for dogs. Pain is often overlooked as a cause of behaviours that might not sit well with us. Owners and pet professionals will find this educational and enlightening.

For those of you that might not be aware, I am a fully accredited dog trainer with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers, something that I am very proud of as there was so much to learn.

I have also completed the Puppy Instructor course which covers choosing the right breed for your circumstances, finding a reputable breeder, what questions to ask before going to see a litter, what to look for when you go for a visit, preparations before your puppy comes home, the early days (and nights 🐾), mouthing, teething, etc

It includes the pros of well run puppy classes and the cons of the not-so-well run ones. When and how to socialise your puppy...

The list goes on...

I often see the question come up on social media, or I am asked, "Can you recommend a dog trainer?" I have volunteered at a few and been a paying customer at others and this is my advice...

Choose the one that suits you, your dog and your budget! There are plenty of excellent ones around, we are very lucky. Ask about certification, accreditation, whether they are canine first-aid trained, with valid insurance for your breed type and that they spend some time on continuous professional development every year as things change! Never be afraid to ask questions, lots of them! No question is stupid and is unlikely to be something that your trainer hasn't come across before.

Most importantly, ask what methods they use to train, there is no need to use any equipment that might cause pain or fear to your dog. Good luck and well done for wanting to train your dog 🐕 🐾🧡
