Small Breeds do not get to skip training ⚠️

Being smaller and more manageable does not mean they do not deserve to thrive, be confident and have consistency.

I do believe small breeds are seen more as an accessory label than a dog in today’s age. If it fits in a bag it’s perfect. The sad reality is that these dogs often turn out to be incredibly anxious, under-fulfilled and reactive.

Can we change the image for small breeds?
Absolutely - great trainer is currently doing this go give her a follow 🤌🏼

The weather this week is a very soggy one ☔️

Please remember to have coats for your dogs - this helps keep our vehicles cleaners, the dogs are easier to dry and more comfortable being out in the rain.

Of course - towels at the ready ✅

We hope you all have a great week ✨

🤫

The past year these have all surfaced across my books, social media or local area.

Did you know doing something unethical to your dog then sticking food in their mouth doesn’t make it ok?

Did you know a walk a day and a round of fetch is not enough for your working dog?

Did you know all behaviours do not need aversive punishment to be changed?

Did you know putting a dog into a sport without taking care of their body increases their risk of injury by 40%?

Did you know my business is banned from almost every local Facebook for being balanced trainers?

Did you know I’ve had individuals message clients not to us because we are balanced trainers?

Did you know giving credit to content creators is the decent thing to do?

Did you know it’s incredibly hard being a trainer creating a career in today’s age? ✅

Putting your dog into drive can be a great alternative to deal with stress but not as a long term solution. Outside of this you’ll need to work on your dogs emotional instability outside of drive 👇

Why? To prevent mistakes happening.

During the workshops this year I’ve seen this in almost all working dogs particularly Malinois. These dogs are built and thrive in drive - outside of drive they were often anxious and unstable. This is what we need to address from a behavioural stance.

Building the picture from the foundations and not skipping steps 🤌🏼

There’s is a lack of education with bloat in dogs - a emergency that sadly can kill your dog 🕊️

Bloat or also known as GDV (gastrodilation volvulus) is life threatening. Your dog’s stomach fills with gas, food or fluid. Once it expands it can flip and twist which stops blood supply to your dog’s stomach and other organs. Sadly preventing blood from returning to your dog’s heart.

Signs 👇

Enlarged, swollen and distended abdomen
Hunched back - usually a sign of abdominal pain
Retching or wanting to vomit and nothing coming up
Restlessness, panting and even collapse

Ways your dog can become bloated 🚨

Consuming too much food at once
Exercising while stomach is filled with water or food including play
Consuming water while excessively panting
Consuming air and eating food too quickly
High stress, anxiety and heat
Breed - deep chested are at a higher risk
Parasites - worms (especially in puppies)

How can it be prevented? ✅

Feed 2 hours before and 2 hours after exercise - google recommends 30-60 minutes IGNORE THIS
Do not give dogs water while panting let them regulate first
Select your choice of rewards for training - avoid using food where your dog will need to play, run, jump etc.
Limit exposure time to water sources especially if they excessively drink
Good quality diet that is gentle on digestion
Using a slow feeder to slow your dogs down - eating too fast can cause excessive air in the stomach
Smaller more frequent meals - 2-3 meals a day or more if needed
Protected meal times - eat, digest and relax (crate)
Gastropexy is a surgical option but even with the surgery your dog can still develop bloat

My own dog Nyx has had minor bloat three times. Once due to training her with food. The second was due to her being too hot and panting excessively after meal. The third after her neutering surgery.

We visited the vets both times and she was xrayed to make sure her stomach hadn’t twisted. What did we do after?

This is my personal choice👇

Increased small meals the next day (4) / half of normal daily intake - no kibble
No exercise the next day
Crated or on place after every meal for a minimum of 1 hour
Water added to meals in a slow feeder
