Cooperative Care
Had a great 1:1 with Arthur today. When doing health checks, grooming and vet checks on your dog it doesn’t need to be stressful. Your dog does not have to get scared and make it impossible!
You can work them through it. Today we used Arthur’s food and toy drive to focus him away from stress. Every interaction ended in food or play with his owner.
We’ve still got lots of work to do but already it’s lovely to see he’s no longer panicking ✨🙏🏼

Today we had 8 amazing owners and their pups join us on a social walk. They done absolutely fantastic.
What is the purpose of social walks?
1. Helps your dog learn to coexist with dogs whether they are on or offlead (neutrality)
2. Correct socialisation - owners get to learn acceptable dog behaviours and poor social manners
3. Social learning - we cover lots of obedience while on the walk and the dogs get tonnes of exposure. They can face everything within the safety of the pack!
4. Builds owner confidence - many owners come to us after bad experiences with the publics out of control dogs - our environment is safe and friendly

The simple answer to this question comes in 3 parts;
1. yes, but the appearance will change
2. yes, but it will be expensive (it usually results in high stitch counts)
3. yes, but you are likely to lose some of the finer details.. but this doesn't necessarily mean it can't be done.

We had a 1:1 session with this gorgeous boy last week to work on his resource guarding inside and outside the home.
Within the first session we built great foundations with him introducing him to a strong “leave it” command and introducing play as a reward. We have lots of work to do with Sully.

Did you know that larger dogs are often better trained than smaller dogs?
It is not anything to do with the dog itself but the owners. Small dog owners tend to put less effort into smaller dogs. There is the assumption they can do less harm and simply do not need it.
Smaller dog pulls? It’s fine they can manage it
Smaller dog lunges and barks? It’s fine they can pick it up (which often happens)
Smaller dog bites? It’s fine (it’s not) it’s only a nip
Larger dogs ^^ these problems cannot be micromanaged.
This means larger dogs tend to be better trained. The majority of dogs that have rushed or reacted to my dogs have all been smaller dogs - particularly daschunds or terriers.
If you ever want to work on your dogs training or behaviour please message us - even the smallest dog can become the most reliable. Your dog doesn’t need to be super sized to be trained. Your dogs breed also doesn’t give it an excuse to have behavioural issues ✅

What is Balanced Training?
It’s not the scary stories you hear. Balanced training is in the name it’s balanced.
Our first priority is building a strong relationship with your dog. This is through rewards, play, trust and boundary setting. We use rewards just like everyone else - toys, food, freedom, verbal and physical praise.
There only difference is we sometimes give clarity through negative reinforcement and positive punishment. These can be as simple as a verbal no or leash pressure added.
As balanced trainers we do not jump straight to using prong collars or Ecollars - these are often the last tools we will use. They are gentle, effective and have saved countless of dogs lives - including the four dogs you see in this picture below.
The horror stories you hear about these tools and physical reinforcement are those used by compulsive trainers - these trainers are the ones I will avoid. I’ve had my own experience with very poor trainers with my own dogs and I never went back!

Buddy making great decisions! We’ve been working on behaviour modification with Buddy for a while now. He’s been building his confidence with me and today was a breakthrough! We had one of our lovely trainers stooge dogs enter the cafe at different times and not a single reaction from this small pup. Previously he would lunge and scream. Now he’s not ready for dogs that are not known by us or we know will not react to him but this is amazing! Amazing decisions!
Ways to cool your dog down in the hot weather ☀️ 1. Of course frozen treats - you can buy doggy ice cream or make it at home. Our house favourite is frozen carrots. 2. Lots of fresh cool water - change every few hours 3. Cool Bandanas, Vests and Mats 4. Walking your dogs earlier or later to miss the midday sun - stick to the shade 5. Grooming - keeping coats short and for double coated dogs making sure they are brushed regularly 6. Water fun - get the hose out or the paddling pool and let your dog have fun in the water! How often do you train your dog in new environments? When training your dogs in new environments this doesn’t only generalise their behaviour but also builds their confidence. Want your dog to start listening to you everywhere? Start training every try where ✅
How often do you take your dog out for exposure training? We recommend exposing your dog to new environments at least twice a week. Exposure builds your dogs confidence and ability to handle stressors in new environments. What do we do in these environments? We keep it easy for the dogs so we do not overwhelm them. We often focus on Heelwalking and downstays exercises. When is your next exposure outing? 📍

How does your dog cope with being at the vets? The vets can be a stressful environment for some dogs - lots of noise and smells. We first started with intense exposure with Nyx at the vets. This exposure included lots of fun with the nurses and training inside and outside of the vets. This helped to completely remove negative association. However / the big game changer for my dog and others I’ve trained is cooperative care. What is this? These are exercises that allow your dog to be more comfortable with handling but be willing to be evolved in handling. In the video Nyxs command is “lay” she holds duration in this command while being touched and is rewarded afterwards. She is instructed to do this and can remove herself if over-threshold but chooses to remain. We use this at every vet appointment to make it less invasive. Do you need help with this? We put our training clients to the test today. They joined our pack environment to proof their obedience. All of these pups were taught individually before coming into this setting - hard work pays off ✅

We were practising a poo stay - and a dog with no owner appeared out of nowhere - the perfect test for my clients 🌟 In this video we have two reactive and two over friendly dogs that have all been asked for a sit or a down. We do not teach “stay” as the expectation is - they remain in the behaviour until released. All of these dogs have been training with me for 3 weeks or more. The main goal of their training is reliability, consistency and neutrality. Do you think they’ve reached it? 😍
Eddie - Offlead Training ✅ Over the past few days we have been proofing Eddies obedience and offlead reliability in multiple places. Eddie was a very over social and over friendly dog that would run up to almost everyone to say hi. He’s learnt the perfect amount of ignorance to dogs and people. His recall is 100% and we’ve now started to proof his “stops” and “offlead Heelwork”. All things that will make offlead time more manageable for his owner. Training Weekend ✅ Nyx - 10 months old Part of Nyxs routine she has 2 x training sessions a day. These are to work on general obedience but also towards her protection work. ✨ Walk & Train ✨ Exposure and Training all in one. Today we covered exposure to trains, people and the dogs themselves. Each dog had 1:1 training with lead work and engagement. While the other dogs learned to watch and settle. Giving affection to the dogs is something we like to do also - as this is often where you’ll find dogs get “jealous” so we practised calm while each dog had affection. A huge mixture of dogs here - reactive, overfriendly and nervous. They all done amazingly well today 🚊 #walkandtrain #dogtrainer #exposuretraining
