Canine behaviour is fascinating! 😮
Have you ever wondered why, in the middle of a rambunctious play session, two dogs will start displaying completely unrelated behaviours? Only for play to start again as if nothing happened!
Ethologists theorise that animal behaviour is ritualised to ensure that disputes can be 'won' without need for in-species fighting, reducing damage to the species population. Dogs playing will often freeze, shake off, start grooming or sniffing in order to momentarily pause play and draw attention away from themselves. This helps calm their nervous system in arousing situations and introduces non-aggressive gestures in order to regulate play!
Throughout this video the dogs display lots of polite pauses and head turning behaviours to regulate play! At 0:45 and 2:09, the smaller dog pauses play, shaking off and looking around, which is respected by the larger dog before play is initiated again - A beautiful play session!
