A Tribute to Beryl - delivered by Sue Thornton on behalf of HDDTC at Beryl's funeral service today.
__________________________

In writing this tribute, I turned to the sentiments expressed by members of the Haslemere and District Dog Training Club when we learned the very sad and sudden news of Beryl’s death. There were many recurring themes: kindness; patience; knowledge; inspiration; enthusiasm; expertise, determination, courage.

Beryl was Haslemere and District Dog Training Club and the club is not the same without her calm and reassuring presence.

Our dog club was founded back in 1967 and Beryl was one of the earliest members, training with her dog, Max, in obedience and agility and going on to enjoy taking part in companion dog shows. In time, Stuart, her husband, became the club’s treasurer and Beryl started her dog training career - becoming one of the club’s longest serving instructors. I can’t begin to think how many dogs have passed through her classes.

Her expertise made her a very versatile trainer. Beryl could teach the whole spectrum of dogs that came through the doors at Grayshott Village Hall - from novice handlers through to our most advanced dogs in the Diamond Class. She loved taking the puppy class – who wouldn’t? But she was so flexible and accommodating, she would teach whatever class she was asked and she would often work with handlers and dogs that needed some extra 1:1 tuition.

Many of our members have spoken of her knowledge and unstinting kindness in the training hall. The process of training a dog can sometimes be two steps forward, one step back and we have all had moments when the training partnership between handler and dog is not as perfect as we might like. Beryl was always ready with the right intervention at the right time to help us make progress and never made us feel stupid or inadequate – we, and our dogs, have so much to thank her for. We have all learned so much from her.

Although in the later years she did not own a dog herself, she had plenty of love to go around all the dogs in the club. Some would seek her out for a cuddle. All of them simply loved her – and dogs are phenomenal judges of character! If only there were only more Beryls in the world, it would be a much better place - full of light and loving kindness.

Beryl was committed to the club and courageously carried on teaching despite the loss of her beloved Stuart in March last year. Even after being poorly at the end of last year, she was quite formidable in her determination to keep going - we couldn’t keep her away from the club on a Thursday night. She would appear at 8pm with her bag of training bits to challenge the diamond dogs and their handlers.
As well as training, Beryl was very involved with the running of the club with several stints on the committee. She was a much-valued committee member always volunteering to help organise one thing or another – her dog-based quizzes always contained some wickedly tricky questions to make us scratch our heads. With a twinkly glint in her eye – she’d tell us that it wouldn’t be fun if she made it too easy!

She is remembered as being a “right hand woman” to club Chairs past and present. I know that without her unfailing support during some difficult personal times, I could not have carried on with my role as chair of the club.

I’d like to finish by sharing a particular reminiscence of a member:
“I personally remember Beryl as a friend and club colleague. Together with Stuart we ran many successful agility shows at Secretts, and companion dog shows at the BOSC club. Where after spending hours putting up rings, tents, gazebos and tannoy systems, Stuart would announce “Time for a pint in club house”.
I’d like to think that somewhere the two of them are enjoying a well-deserved tipple together.

Cheers Beryl and thank you for everything.

There are now just 290 votes in between 4th & 3rd place (and a difference of £250), so please take a moment to vote for us. Voting closes for this round at 8pm tonight.

Here's a link to the Kennel Club's latest newsletter - it includes some good advice for helping your dog(s) through the firework season.

It's important to remember that these treats should only be given occasionally as part of a well-balanced diet. Some of these recipes may not be suitable for dogs with nut allergies or other special dietary needs.

Don't forget it's the club's AGM on Thursday night (20th) at Grayshott Village Hall at 7:30pm.

All members are very welome to hear what the club's been up to, to contribute to what we do next, and to share members' successes during the awards!

After business is concluded there'll be time to chat and socialise. Drinks are on the club but, if you can, bring a plate of food to share.

See you there 🐾

As we are a Kennel Club affiliated club, I thought our members may wish to read this from Mark Beazley, Chief Executive of The Kennel Club.
___________________________________________

It was with a great sadness that we learnt of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and we join the nation in mourning her loss.

Her Majesty The Queen was an avid dog lover, most famously known for her love of Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and she truly epitomised the love and affection this nation holds for its dog companions.

We are honoured to have had Her Majesty The Queen’s patronage for 70 years and that she enjoyed and had attended our flagship event, Crufts.

As a sign of our deep respect, the flag at our London office has been lowered to half-mast. On the day of Her Majesty’s funeral, The Kennel Club will be closed.

In the meantime, our deepest condolences go out to the Royal Family and all whose lives she touched.

On behalf of all of us at The Kennel Club.

02/03/2022

One of our marvellous trainers, Ruth Gray, is organising a Have-A-Go-Day for members who would like to try out the activity of Hoopers with their dog(s).

If you haven't heard of Hoopers, it is a fun, low-impact activity suitable for most dogs over 6 months old and all handlers. The dogs are trained to run a course of hoops, around barrels, through short tunnels and run over a mat - no jumping or tight turns are involved . The dogs are trained to work independently of their handler therefore no running is needed by the handler, unless they want to but that’s not the aim!!

If you are interested, all the details are below:

HOOPERS HAVE A GO/TASTER SESSION
When? The afternoon of Saturday 7th May 2022 - exact timings will be confirmed once we know the number of participants.

Where? Touch and Go Agility, Broadway Lane, Lovedean, PO8 0SG (just through Clanfield off the A3 - about 25minutes from Grayshott)

What? 1 hour session - a short demo followed by a training session for 6/8 dogs with their handlers

How much? £10 per dog and handler (includes £1 donation to the club's 2022 charity - Spaniel Aid). £3 spectators.

What Next? If you are interested, please email RuthGray at [email protected]. Once Ruth knows who is interested she will arrange the classes accordingly.

Run by Sue Grisham (your trainer on the day), Touch and Go Agility is fully insured and first aid qualified for dogs. Training takes place outside in dog-safe safe fields.
