Swimming is not just for the younger dogs who love to jump in and make a big splash. It is a great exercise for the elder dogs.
Here is the lovely Miss Tilly at 15 years young showing how to swim gracefully.

The 4 S's are essential in our homes especially when it comes to the Summer Holidays!!

With the Summer Holidays in full swing there are a few things we need to consider for our dogs:

🐾 Change of Routine
🐾 Children home a lot more than normal
🐾 Lots of visitors from friends/family to other children coming and going that our dogs may not know very well
🐾 Days out
🐾 Holidays booked
🐾 Our dogs being looked after by different people
🐾 Hot Weather
🐾 Visiting new places and surroundings
🐾 Visiting Family/Friends
🐾 Busy/Stressful Environments

The list is endless but we need to consider the Summer Holidays are an extra busy time for us all especially when you have children but we have to remember it is just as busy for our Dogs and we need to be Pro Active in ensuring we do not put our children/dogs in situations they are uncomfortable with.

Here at Barking Mad Dog Training School & Behavioural Centre we encourage everyone to follow the 4 easy steps to help ensure everyone is able to enjoy themselves.

🐾 Stay Close - When dogs and children are together we need to ensure we are able to Stay Close, Watch, Listen and be present at all times.

🐾 Supervise - It is our responsibility as both parents to our children and dogs to Supervise interaction with dogs and children at all times and be there if either one is behaving inappropriately or look uncomfortable.

🐾 Step-In - Stepping in and intervening is key to ensuring children and dogs both understand that if one is not happy, the situation does not need to escalate it can easily be resolved by Mum or Dad stepping in educating and helping to resolve it.

🐾 Seperate - Seperating dogs and children if it is all getting a bit too much for one another is a great way to allow some downtime. Separation can also help if you are busy and likely to be distracted I.e the morning rush, making dinner, bath time. For example popping your dog in their bed or a rest area so they can have some down time to relax and not be disturbed.

We are strong believers in children should be involved in dog training but we have to remember we are the responsible parents and both dogs and children need us to guide them through it.

Educating our children about dogs and us as owners being able to read our own dogs body language are paramount to ensuring our dogs and children live in harmony together.

When a dog is nervous, searching is a great way to build confidence. Percy has done amazing with his confidence, his eye would almost pop out of his head if you even glanced at him. With the help and patience of the staff and instructors when he comes to class and day training, he is a more relaxed dog, not totally laid back but a lot happier and more independent.

A big well done to Sheenagh and Missie who recently won up out of Grade 4. Today they competed in their first Grade 5 show and only went and won the grade 5-7 agility! So pleased for this pair who have shown that dedication and hard work do pay off 🥳🏆🍾

⚠️On days like today, it doesn’t matter if your dog misses its walk. It’s much better to keep them safe and cool.
Give them other things to do like frozen Kong, snuffle mats, and Puzzles whether they are brought or homemade.
Make sure they have access to drinking water and try not to let them Sun bath because some will try🙈.
If your dog shows any sign of heat stroke, then please contact your vet.

Early signs of heatstroke in pets:
Panting, this can progress to distressed or noisy breathing as the heatstroke worsens.
Restlessness or agitation, pacing, seeking shade or water.
Drooling.
Red gums or tongue.
Increased heart rate.
Vomiting or diarrhoea.🔴

Daycare with Training🐾
Loose lead walking is commonly misunderstood. When we go for a walk we shouldn’t expect our dog to be glued to our side the entire time like a robot, this wouldn’t be an enjoyable and stimulating walk for our dogs. Yes there are times where we need their full attention right by our side, but a lot of the time this is what your lead walks should look like. A nice loose lead and plenty of checking in but also lots of sniffing and exploring. Lovely work Lexi and co🐾💙 ~S
