⚠Don't do a Darcy!⚠
Darcy, a playful terrier with a knack for finding food dropped by toddlers, managed to get a Soreen bar!🍞❌ Luckily for Darcy she is owned by our very own James, he brought her straight in and the team gave her a special medication to make her sick 🤢
Soreen bars contain raisins which are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure in high quantities. With Christmas coming up it is important to be mindful of what’s within your dog’s reach and check for potentially toxic ingredients in foods.
If your dog accidentally eats something harmful you can get advice by calling the Animal Poison Line on: 01202 509000 , you can also visit their website: animalpoisonline.co.uk

Tips for how to keep your dog safe while walking in low light 🐕🌃

🐶 Keep your dog on a lead - Keeping your dog on a lead means you know where they are at all times and you will have more control if your dog becomes scared.
🐶 Reflective accessories - If your dog wears a coat these can be bought with reflective patches or if you prefer your could get them a reflective collar or harness to wear.
🐶 Light up collars of LED lights - Light up collars and/or clip on LED lights should be used in addition to your dogs usual collar or harness but are a great way to make your dog more easily seen in low light.

As an owner it's important to try to remember to take your mobile phone or carry a torch with you if walking your dog at night or in low light areas, Where possible we would also recommend walking with a family member or friend as the darker nights draw in.

👁Eric's Eye👁
Recently we had the please of treating Eric, one of James' cats, as he had injured his eye! You may be able to see in the picture a bright orange staining around Eric's eye, this is from a product we use to 'stain' the eyeball and look for any ulcers or injuries. Luckily for Eric there were no injuries to his eyeball and he was able to go home with James later the same day!

Did you know that we can offer Animal Health Certificates (AHC's) and Export Certificates (EHC's) if your furry family member needs to travel?

Requirements do vary depending on the country you are visiting but if you are looking to travel book an appointment to see one of our OV's.

This handsome chap is Kano. Kano came to see us as he needed an EHC for travelling. His owner sent us this photo of him 'travelling in style' on his way to Canada. Suited & booted on a private jet! 🐾🛩

Meet the beautiful Peanut; a 2 1/2 year old Dogue de Bordeaux 🩷
Peanut recently had Pyometra surgery. Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that occurs when pus and bacteria build up in the uterine cavity but thankfully in Peanut's case the surgery was carried out in a timely manner.

📣 Pet diabetes month 📣

Here is Charlie's story told by his owner Grant....

This handsome boy is Charlie, who was found as rescue cat living on the streets in 2012, It was estimated that he was about 2 so that would make him 14 now, 14 and half to be more precise.
He’s a bit older now compared to this picture, and he runs around a lot less. Sleeps a lot though.
In September 2020, Charlie become extremely unwell; he was battling severe case of pancreatitis and it was whilst he was being treated for that we discovered that he was also diabetic. One of the things that we noticed was the extreme weight loss and drinking of water which we had put down to being ill. When he was diagnosed with diabetes it all made sense. Including his love of shortbread biscuits and lemon cake which he always tries to pinch a bit of.

Charlie seemed to acclimatise to having injections twice a day pretty quickly, we were a bit more tentative with him at first,. We quickly got into a routine where we fed him his thyronorm I hour before his injection, which we did for the best part of 3 years.

We changed that last late last year and started giving him food with his other medicine in just after his injection. Sometimes this may be a treat so he’ll always get something and I think he now knows he’ll have something delicious to eat after his insulin has been given.

He is a brave boy who has never cowered from us nor lash out. He does flinch from time to time but I put that down to the poor injecting skills of his owner.

We watch for signs - excess drinking, going to the loo but we appear to have the amount of insulin he receives just about right, Its been a long journey to get to that point. We use to leave him at the vets for the day so that they could take regular readings but that became a bit stressful for him. We now have a fructosamine test completed every 3 months or so just to make sure his diabetes is under control.
Apparently it’s unusual for a diabetic cat with a thyroid issue to put on weight but our old boy has!! Finally we think the number of units are correct!

Charlie has always been one to stay close to home - even before his diabetes diagnosis. Nowadays he’ll wander the empire of his garden making sure there are no intruders but he much prefers the comfort of the snuggle chair or sofa, especially if the green blanket is down. He has some arthritis which means his grooming isn’t what it was, his fur a little more matted nowadays.

For us, it’s been a bit harder,. There is a routine of 7am and 7pm injections. 7am is fine during the week as we’re up for work, it becomes a strain when you don’t always get an opportunity to lie in at the weekend, I get up on Saturday and Jen (Mrs W) will be the one to get up on a Sunday,
7pm can be restrictive if you want to go out in the evening or have an early dinner. Whilst we know we can flex slightly either way we try to maintain the discipline of every twelve hours. Charlie always comes first.
We do go away, but we do fret that Jen’s mum, who does the injections in our absence is doing it the correctly. A lot of our friends live far in places like Cannock and Wast Brom so it’s not practical for them to help us out though they have offered.

Charlie’s diabetes also impacted on all of us being able to attend my wife’s aunts wedding in April 2023. We rang 3 catteries and they were all reluctant to take Charlie due to the timing of his injectors, so whilst they would accept our other two cats they weren’t prepared to take in Charlie for 2 nights.
It meant that I had to stay back and look after all 3 and miss the wedding celebrations.

Both of us work in a hybrid pattern with time in the office and time at home. We plan it so that at least one of us working from home each day so we can keep an eye on Charlie (and Frankie!), that way we’ll notice if anything doesn’t seem quite right.

✨ Why is nail care so important for your pets?

1️⃣ Comfort and Mobility: Overgrown nails can make it uncomfortable for your pets to walk, run, or even stand. Clipping their nails ensures they can move freely and comfortably.

2️⃣ Preventing Injury: Long nails can easily get caught in carpet, furniture, or even on their own paws, leading to painful injuries. Regular trimming helps reduce these risks.

3️⃣ Healthy Paws: Proper nail care also supports healthy paw structure. Avoiding overly long nails can prevent issues like splayed toes and deformed paw pads.

4️⃣ Protect Your Floors: Shorter nails are less likely to scratch and damage your floors, furniture, and other surfaces.

So, how can you keep those claws in check? 🤔

👉 Regular trimming: Clip your pet's nails as needed, depending on their breed and activity level. If you're unsure, consult your vet.

👉 Positive Experience: Make it a positive experience for your pet. Use treats, gentle praise, and patience to help them feel at ease during the process.

👉 Safety First: Be cautious not to cut too close to the quick (the pink part of the nail), as it can be painful and cause bleeding.

Nail clipping is included in all of our Wellness Subscriptions so if you feel that your pet may need to have this done on a regular basis a subscription may be the most suitable option for you ✂️🐶🐱

Arthritis is a long-lasting, inflammatory disease which affects the animal’s joint health. It is caused when the cartilage between joints becomes less smooth and damaged, causing the surface of the bone to rub together and your dog/cats joints to stiffen, swell and become painful.

These symptoms can restrict your pets mobility, as it becomes uncomfortable for them to get up and walk around. Although more prevalent in senior cats & dogs, young pets can also suffer from arthritis if they become injured, such as tearing their cruciate ligament, or if they have weak muscles and muscle loss.

Although your pet may seem fine in themselves, eating normally and interested in going out for walks; there are several symptoms of arthritis to be aware of. It’s important to take note of any changes, even if they don’t seem to be linked to having sore legs.

* Limping
* Tiredness and showing an unwillingness to get up or walk around. Your pet may seem a bit stiff in the morning, or they can’t get comfortable when lying down.
* Licking or chewing painful areas
* Signs of pain when standing, walking, or sitting up or down
* Behavioural changes. Your pets behaviour may change and they may seem a bit grumpy if being cuddled or touched too much.
* Slowing down. Your cat or dog may seem to have “got old suddenly” and tired quickly.

If you have any concerns about your pets mobility please contact us to make an appointment.
Arthritis clinics are also included as part of the Silver & Gold Wellness subscriptions 🐾🐈🐕

Here's lovely 3 month old kitten Nala 🐈

Nala came in for her 2nd vaccination, microchip and parasite treatment with nurse JB. She wasn't too keen on the microchip but afterwards got extra cuddles from the 'cat crazy' Louise and now seems to think she is a parrot 😹
