Yesterday Teagan, Finn and respective owners took ourselves up to the woods for some training, we did some retrieving, nothing too complicated today, we were looking for short successful trips out and back, not being tempted by the environment just keeping focused on the task in hand. Then we finished with some hunting in a smallish spot with varied undergrowth. A good session with things to work on, but both dogs working well. We finished of with having a cup of tea on the way home and a chat about what we would all like to achieve in the coming year.
Thanks for an interesting morning.

Little Willow is growing fast and coming along well, she wants to please and you find her at your feet looking earnestly up at you saying what’s next. Lead walking, placeboard, learning to come away from things you want when asked, starting hunting in an enclosed space, recall she just loves it all.

Kali came today for another of her regular visits, it’s keeping on being consistent with her. Today we started the session with her looking for a hunting disc as they are difficult to find, she loved this game and so will be a useful one to take out on her walks. She finds me so exciting so we worked on that disengagement for me, I was even more exciting than food, so I used myself instead of the food bowl, when she disengaged from me, she could come and say hello. She is a lovely young dog but sometimes has strong opinions on life.

Teagan came for a visit and we also did the grid as she is quite focused and prepared for this level or so we thought. Some days dogs don’t work so well , for whatever reasons. So it’s important on these days not to get frustrated. Stop what isn’t working, go back to basics if needed and work out where the weakness is so you can move on again, with more experienced dogs it make take a quick refresh, other times it may be a vital part was missed on their journey. It’s all a learning curve. Again end on a positive for owner and dog learn and move on.

Next up was Finn, they want to work towards Gundog Certificate on dummies, so I put out a grid for our session, we worked on that and some bits were good and some showed weaknesses that needed help, so we shortened distances and then had to isolate certain parts and work in them away from the grid and then come back. Always wanting to finish on a positive note . Good feedback for this session.

The week started with a new client with a lovely young Labrador, who their owners think would enjoy some Gundog training. She was a little timid to start, but we introduced a whistle recall with a good bowl, try out some some retrieves to see where she was, so work to do there, so she has gone home with some homework, Molly became for confident as the session went on. Both her owner and her are keen to come back, which is great, a lovely young dog with great potential.

Of course one must not forget a visit from the pocket rocket, who announced her arrival, she was pretty on point all session, retrieving seens and blinds over a jump and some directions from different angles. She went back for a snooze after her session and the rest of the family had a run around. Good to see Izzie looking so fit. This picture is I imagine how she looked when she went home!

Kali came for another visit too, she has been trying Agility as well, which she seems to be enjoying. We worked on recall away from exciting things, which is quite often me. Her owner is great and puts lots of enthusiasm to get her attention and then keeps here with her until she’s allowed to go again. She also loves toys they were in a box, she wanted them, she had to leave them and we had to wait sometime before she disengaged from then, then she was allowed them, she was pleased then to be able to have a nice play, while we sat on the grass and gave her the time to decompress, she found this a hard session.

Willow has been for a couple of more visits, what a change with this lovely puppy. Bags more confidence, quick to learn and eager to please, who can ask for more, this week we worked on recall and teaching her gate manners and the settle mat, so she can take that forward to the coffee shops. She was so sweet and comes and sits in front of you asking whats next

Dottie came at the weekend as our evening slot is starting to become darker, possibly a couple more times are possible!! She is quite hormonal at the moment, so we kept things simple and worked on her steadiness in different areas of the field and finished with a little hunting. Homework was working on recall between her owners in spaces that are safe and not too exciting.

Finn came for a visit, he hasn’t been for a while as he has been busy doing other things. He had decided to revisit his Gundog life and work towards the Working Gundog Certificate. So we talked about what the criteria was , went through a few things to test his memory, just a few little tweaks are needed here and there to tidy up delivery. We will need to go out and about to find ground to practice hunting and retrieving in, so we made a plan for the foreseeable with involves some lessons here and then testing them out in better ground and then working on details back here.
So something different to do which is great and challenging.

Lovely little Willow came this week too, her confidence is growing, we are using this time while she is keen to be around you without leads or harness, praising her every time she gives eye contact rewarding her, then letting her go again, she is staying close and enjoying this time, building up her confidence. We then went into the small pen, practiced on and off lead work, how she is wearing her harness for walks and how important it is as she grows which type of harness is the best shape going forward. We are working on using toys and voice commands in an encouraging way to sound positive and praising her for the behaviours we want. We talked about dealing with her jumping up and how to manage her when she is tired and bitey. She is learning to be left for short amounts of time which is essential to start when they are young, getting your timings right and short sessions are the key. A super little dog, who is going to be lots of fun.
