After a case of bluetongue serotype 3 was confirmed in Kent, a hotline has been launched to support affected farmers.

The case was confirmed near Canterbury on the 11th November and is the first case of the emerging strain BTV-3 in England.

The new bluetongue hotline will be available for all farmers and animal keepers from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday on 024 7771 0386.

NFU members can also access the CallFirst hotline: 0370 845 8458.

Bluetongue has been confirmed in a single animal near Canterbury in Kent and due to this a 10km control zone has been put in place to minimise spread whilst further surveillance is carried out.

Bluetongue is spread by the Culicoides midge which can be spread / blown up to 200km. With the recent reports of Bluetongue in Belgium and Netherlands it’s likely that this has been spread across the channel. Vigilance remains the priority to keep spread under control.

What should you look for?
• In general, sheep tend to show more signs than cattle
• Ulcers and swelling in the mouth
• Nasal and mouth discharge
• Swelling of the coronary band in sheep
• Swollen teats in cattle
• Red skin and eyes in cattle
• Depressed

If you have any concerns, please contact your vet as soon as possible so they can hopefully rule Bluetongue out or carry out the appropriate sampling and assessments.

Please remember, Bluetongue does not affect people or food safety.

Maintaining impeccable hygiene when preparing to dry off your spring block herd is crucial for health and milk quality. Some quick reminders to help you prepare for a smooth dry off period:
• Cleaning and sterilisation of the teats is crucial. Check out our Teat Care department for wipes, teat dip cups and more https://tinyurl.com/6be3u8hx
• Many hands make light work – when trying to keep things as sterile as possible, plan for sufficient help and take your time. It’s best to have one person trained and responsible for tubing.
• Mark cows BEFORE treatment to avoid any error. You’ll find Tail Tape https://tinyurl.com/ye2axnaz or Reusable Indentification Leg Bands https://tinyurl.com/ye288n8p to help with this.
• Don’t leave cows standing in the parlour too long – the longer they stand, the more muck they will create. Keep back manageable groups after milking to avoid this.
