Ahhh, who doesn't love a golden oldie? ❤️🐈
Older kitties are so very special, but they do require a little bit of extra TLC sometimes.

A cat's body changes as it gets older, making it more prone to age related changes including :

▪️Osteoarthritis
▪️Dental disease
▪️Poor coat
▪️Long claws
▪️Reduced lean muscle mass (contributes towards weakness and weight loss)
▪️Organ and endocrine disease e.g. kidney problems, hyperthyroidism
▪️Certain cancers
▪️CDS (cognitive dysfunction syndrome) ie senility
▪️Reduced function of special senses ie vision, hearing, smell and taste
▪️Behavioural changes associated with pain or illness such as house soiling or aggression may occur too 😿

🤔Does this mean that out senior and super senior kitties can't have a good quality of life?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!😸

🐈Many of these age related issues can be manged by making environmental modifications or through simple medical or dietary management.

🐈Older cats may need a little help from us, but many still love to play and can live great lives if we learn how to help them and look after their needs

If you suspect your cat may be showing age related changes speak to your veterinary team, who will be more than happy to help.😊💚

🐈Ideally older kitties should receive a health check from a vet at least 2-4 times a year

Veterinary nurses are also there to provide support and help owners manage cats with chronic illness 💚

Elderly kitties are rarely 'just getting old' They just need our understanding and help to live the best life they can ❤️🐈

🔥Repost because its hot again!

❄️Here are some tips for keeping your cat cool :

💧Make sure there is plenty of fresh water available both inside and outside of the house. Try offering water in different types of containers to see what your cat's preference is

🌳Make sure there are plenty of shaded areas outside. Garden furniture, large plant pots, trees and bushes all provide good shade.

📦Cardboard boxes also provide shade and can be left upturned with an extrance and exit cut out for your cat to use

❄️Place cooling mats in beds and areas where your cat might like to sleep, these are available in most pet shops, online and some bigger hardware stores

💧Make some tuna water (not brine) or chicken broth (no added salt) ice lollies for your cat to lick or place some ice cubes made the same way in your cats water to keep it cool and encourage him or her to drink

🌞Keep your cat out of conservatories and out of the midday sun where possible

🐾 Be especially careful with the older cats who may be less able to move easily to cooler areas of the house or garden

🐈Long haired cats are particularly susceptible to overheating , so should be monitored for heat exaughstion and given access to cool areas to rest out of the sun

🐈Make sure white cats or those with pink skin on their ears or nose are kept out of the sun or use pet friendly sun block as they are more prone to sun burn

🐈Reduce playtime, especially with kittens as they will be more likely to overheat

⚠️If your cats live in a a multi-cat household make sure they all have easy access to their own water and shaded areas, ideally one per cat plus a spare
