Happy new year to all of our supporters

It's been a productive year here at Wirral Fox Rescue, we've seen unprecedented numbers through our doors and 2025 is set to be even busier

We end the year much the same as we started, in full swing with every single one of our traps out. We'll be spending the evening on call, and looking after the foxes already in our care at the centre and enclosure sites

Thank you for following us this year, and allowing us to provide a unique insight into foxes and their journey in rehab with us. We couldnt have achieved everything we have without your support, and that's a lot of lives saved..

We hope everyone enjoys seeing the individual journeys here as much as we've enjoyed catching and rehabilitating, and we hope that the publicizing of some of our patients this year has gone some way to show them for the beautiful and sensitive animals that they truly are

More updates to follow on 5 foxes released this month and other foxes in our care

As our new years present to ourselves, and with thanks to the homeowner for spotting him, Freddy (Pictured below) was caught in one of our traps today just as the weather was begining to turn. He will go into 2025 with us safe and warm at the centre

Stay safe everyone, and see you out there

Introducing Millie

We caught her after reports from concerned residents explaining that Millie was out in the day and refusing to move. It's not uncommon to see foxes out in the day, and provided they look well and are reacting appropriately to their surroundings it's usually not cause for concern

Millie however was reluctant, moving only a couple of meters to take shelter under a hedge. If it was just the mange at this severity then we could treat and release her on the spot, but Millie didn't react to us as we'd expect a healthy fox to react, and we noticed that she had a minor injury to her leg. We caught her with a pole from under the hedge to her surprise

She's settled in now and enjoying a warm bed and nutritious meals. We've given a mange treatment and started her on antibiotics. She's made it known to us that she's not happy with her new temporary accommodation, and judging by her overall health it shouldn't be long before she's back home

Good morning from Frodo

He's just about healed up, we'll do a farewell post when it's time for him to go. He's come an awful long way after we found him with a plastic ring stuck around his body wich had rubbed away at his flesh as he grew, creating a deep wound

It's taken some time to heal such a horrific injury, but he's 95% there and home is in sight. He is healthy and feisty and eager to go

Keep it up Frodo, not long now 🧡

Flo is doing well

Here she is during clean this morning

She's putting weight on steadily and moving much more freely. She's finished treatment for suspected toxoplasmosis, and this has corrected her behaviour wich is now much less concerning

X-rays showed that she had been in a confrontation before coming to us, and given her age it's likley this was relating to the trials of dispersal. Exactly what lead her to the busy bridge is unclear, but with the infection it's possible that she's wandered up there weak and hungry, and It all became a bit much for her

She's a little more to go with us, but she's on the up, things are looking good and it won't be long before she's back home with a clean bill and ready for life in the wild

Here's Daphne

Daphne wondered into a small sheltered box before we were due to put a trap out for her. Thanks to the homeowners quick thinking, she was quickly blocked in while they waited for us to arrive

We set the hospital transfer up at the entrance and she walked inside without a fuss. Given the state of her, she certainly wouldn't have survived much longer

She's covered in mange and has been suffering, but she has a great appetite, she's now curled up in a warm bed, and now we have her we can begin to turn her life around

We've cut 11 foxes out of nets in various locations across Wirral in the last 2 months alone

If nets are kept up permanently then it is inevitable that a fox will end up tangled. It isn't a seasonal issue, foxes are getting stuck year round, mainly on school grounds. Needless to say something has to change

Constriction injuries can take some time to appear, so where possible we admit the fox for short term observations. This fox also has mange starting on his rump, so it's a positive that we can treat him for the mites while we have him. This not only helps him avoid a long and slow decline, it also prevents the mites infecting other foxes in the area. Having said that, things could have ended very differently for him had the school been closed

Thankfully it wasn't and they called for help immediately

Aside from the trauma of the ordeal, He's lucky in that he has no permanent injuries from being stuck in the netting, and his stay with us should be a short one

This is Florence

She was found on the central reservation on a busy bridge. Traffic was whizzing past in both directions, but flo was lay down and wouldn't move. Originaly, a member of the public spotted flo and put a box over her and wrote a message "Injured fox" before they had to leave

It wasn't long before another member of the public spotted the box and went for a closer look. After realising there was a live fox in the box who was not well, flo was picked up and swiftly delivered to us at the centre

She is seriously underweight and it looks like she has been struggling for some time. Her obs are fine, but we've some investigation to do to figure out whats going on with Flo. Her appetite is okay, and she's enjoying a comfy bed and warm room far away from the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic

Here's Bear

Transferd to us from Daleside Veterinary Clinic who's swift actions undoubtedly saved his life after a kind member of the public found him

He's now resting at the centre with us

Bear has a severe wound at the base of his tail. It's a large 300° hole that started out as a bite. This quickly became infected, and it was downhill from there until he was found collapsed

He is being good about all of the fuss here, we are draining the site and keeping it clean, and this can be very stressful for a fox. Pain relief, along with a firm and yet gentle approach means minimal stress is caused to him, foxes being incredibly sensitive animals, the importance of this can not be overstated

He is underweight and his appetite isnt great, but we expect as much after such an ordeal. We've methods to tempt him to eat however, and he's managed some bits of nutritious food wich is a promising start 🧡

We've had lots of messages about the fox we caught with a ring stuck around his body

Here he is today, it's Frodo

He's doing very well and healing up nicely. It'll be some time yet, but it's looking good for young Frodo, and we hope to release him in 2 - 3 weeks time, at wich point he will be fully healed

Mimi is going home

When we caught her she was suffering with a severe mange infection and covered in fly eggs. She had several open wounds that had become infected, and fly larvae were eating her alive. She was a shell of a fox and after weeks of suffering, she had given up, and was at the end of her life

You wouldn't know that now though. She's all better, and she feels like a brand new fox. She spent her last couple of weeks grumbing at us and destroying her kennel. She's ready and eager to get home, and we are confident that she will thrive

Good luck Mimi 🧡

** Distressing Images ****

(Before you look, please be aware that the fox in these pictures is safe and well)

Its not just nets that pose a risk

Here's a fox we've been trying to trap for some time. The poor lad has had this plastic ring stuck on him for a number of months. As you can see in the pictures, this has caused serious damage to his body, as well as immeasurable suffering. Despite all of this, he has survived

It's commonly accepted that football nets can be dangerous for foxes due to the risk of the fox becoming tangled. We've freed our fair share of foxes from nets, but the same can be said for other outdoor sport and game related objects

Really, it's just common sense. If folk were in the habit of putting these items away after use, then this poor fox and many like him would be spared from a traumatic ordeal, sometimes with fatal outcome

Thankfully, this fox wondered into a shed where we were able to catch him, but many others aren't so lucky

He'll be with us for some time yet. We've removed the object and cleaned the wound. he's currently at our vet for stitches and then his recovery with us at the centre will begin

We've included a link in the comments for anyone who kindly wishes to donate towards the cost of his care

Please share this post and help us raise awareness. Tidy up after games folks, and don't leave nets up!

Here's Shadow

We caught her a week ago after she was spotted suffering with a mange infection. Along with the open sores, It wouldnt have been long before this progressed into something life threatening, and it's unlikley she would have lived to see December if she hadn't wondered into our trap

As is evident here, she's doing really well with us and it won't be too long before she can go home to live her new life as a new fox, free from suffering

Keep going Shadow, almost there! 🧡

Last night was Freya's turn to go home

Freya was with us for a short course of anti biotics after being spotted looking quite poorly in the garden. The homeowner managed to shut Freya in the shed and waited for us to arrive

On examination at the centre, we could see that she was suffering with a low grade infection, but she was healthy otherwise

She's in good health now and protected from parasites, here you can see freya when she was reported to us and on the day of release. Thanks to the homeowner who spotted her and reached out to us, this enabled us to deal with the infection before it had chance to become life threatening, and now freya is ready to continue on her way

Good luck 🧡

Here's Sebastian

Found caught in a fence in the middle of the countryside, the poor boy had been there for some time before anyone noticed him

After recieving the call from a member of the public outside of our catchment area, we had to reach out to see if we could get someone there quickly. Without a moments hesitation our friends North Wales Hunt Saboteurs were on the case and at the location within half an hour. It was straight to our vet and after examination it became apparent that due to the damage sustained after twisting and turning all night, Seb would need to lose the leg if he was to survive this ordeal.
He's done really well with us and he's now all healed up, so it's time for us to look at his options going forward, non of wich include pts

A big thank you to North Wales Hunt Sabs and Cheshire Monitors who's help in this rescue undoubtedly saved Sebs life

We've included a link in the comments for anyone who wishes to contribute towards the cost of his operation and inhouse care with us at the centre

Well done Seb 👏
