Do you have a puppy? 🤔

If so, we are so happy for you! Having a puppy is a wonderful experience. 🥰 However, you might wonder, “When will my puppy stop growing?”

Time flies by when you have a puppy, but maturity will come usually between 6 and 24 months of age, depending on their breed size. Small breeds might reach their adult size at 6 months, while larger breeds will normally take a little longer.

If you have a puppy, we’d love to see them in the comments below! 👇📷

In order to have a great party without any issues, be sure to:

🥂 Keep curious paws from any human treats like chocolate, bones or fatty table scraps

🥂 Store any alcohol well away from pets

🥂 Provide a cosy space for them, away from the guests and noise

Don't hesitate to give us a call if any issue comes up! We are here to support you every day of the year!

Have you ever seen your cat breathing through their mouth? Unlike dogs, this is not normal behaviour, so please contact us if you see this. 📲

While dogs will often pant as a way to lose heat, cats regulate their body temperature differently. If your cat is using their mouth to breathe, this could mean they are either very stressed or experiencing breathing difficulties.

As there are a lot of severe health issues that might cause open mouth breathing in cats, such as heart problems, respiratory illness or even some types of cancer, veterinary assessment is vital, so don’t hesitate to book an appointment.

The Christmas countdown has already started, and although this is a wonderful time of the year, it can also bring some concerns for pet owners!

Remember to keep these away from your furry friends:

🍫 Food that contains chocolate, sweeteners (like xylitol), raisins or grapes and high fat content

💐 Plants like lilies, holly, ivy and any essential oils

🎄 Unprotected Christmas decorations

🕯️ Lit candles

We hope you have a happy and safe Christmas season! If something unexpected happens, we are always on the other end of a call or message, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help during the holidays.

“My pet ate all the boxes of chocolates under the tree, what do I do?” 🍫💝🎁

Most pet parents know chocolate is toxic to pets, but what should you do if it happens? ⬇️

Christmas time can mean lots of chocolate around the house, or even under the tree. From advent calendars to decorations and wrapped presents. We would all love to enjoy celebrations without disasters.

This is why it is so important to keep all chocolates well away from our pets and be cautious of where we store chocolate - such as under the tree where they can get to it easily!.

What to do if your pet has eaten chocolate:

The best thing to do it to contact us, or you can contact VidiVet when we are closed, with a picture of the chocolate, or treat packaging and also let us know the weight of your pet and how much they ate. 🩺 VidiVet will then use this information to calculate whether your pet needs to go in for an emergency vet visit.

Most domestic pets are soft furry animals, but have you ever thought about your pet’s hair beyond aesthetic purposes?

The truth is that their hair serves a number of protective functions, from blocking UV light to regulating body temperature. 🌡️ This is why a good home grooming routine is so important, especially for breeds with long, thick or curly hair

However, if you struggle to care for your pet’s coat and skin at home, we are happy to help!

Today, we're talking about Christmas outfits for pets! 🐶🐱🧣

Although we do advise against dressing your pet in tighter clothes and certain fabrics as they can irritate your pets and limit their movement…

…if you do decide to dress your pets up this Christmas, it is important to be aware of common indicators of discomfort to ensure they aren't feeling any kind of distress.

At Christmas, it can be tempting to dress your pet up in a funky festive jumper to get into the Christmas spirit. We recommend that if you do wish to dress up your pet, minimal pieces such as a festive-themed collar, harness or lead are considered.

This is because pet costumes can cause some pets to become uncomfortable and even restrict the movement of your pet.

If you do decide to dress up your pet for Christmas, it is important to never leave your pet unattended and keep an eye out for any signs of discomfort.

Common indicators that the costume should be removed include:
Ears folded down
Eyes rolling
Tail tucked
Hunching over

The joy of finding a new pet underneath the Christmas tree is almost a movie cliché at this point, but we would like to remind our community that pets are not good gifts, especially for children who are expected to care for them!

A companion animal is a full-fledged family member and their care requires time, preparation and resources for truly responsible ownership. As such, we urge prospective owners to really take the time to consider if it is the right time for a new pet.

Time to talk about silica gel!

Silica Gel - what is it? The mysterious paper bag of beads commonly found in gifts....it's not toxic to pets, HOWEVER, make sure to always check inside gifts before letting your pet go sniffing about.

If bags are ingested, you might see some vomiting or diarrhoea, and in very small pets there is the possibility that they cause an obstruction in the intestinal tract.

My pet has swallowed silica gel, what do I do?

As a general rule, if your pet ingests any foreign objects, ask VidiVet as soon as possible. Make sure to tell the vets: what was ingested, how much and any symptoms that your pet is experiencing.

If your pet isn't passing stools as expected, if they vomit up any food, or if their abdomen appears bloated, it is best to contact VidiVet (or your local vet) and we can help you to decide whether a vet visit is needed.

If you’ve got any Christmas-related questions, if you’re not sure if you need an appointment or anything else at all, don’t forget you can ask VidiVet any questions you may have, even when our practice is closed as a Client of Hoylake Vets.
