Where do you leave your pets when you need to go away? 🤔

While some pets (especially cats and small furries) are usually better off staying in their home with regular visits, more social pets can thrive in a good kennel.

If you’re choosing a pet sitter:

🏠 Ensure you and your pet meet them in advance

🏠 Read online reviews before making a decision

🏠 Ask if they have any training in pet behaviour and first aid

If you’re choosing a kennel:

🐾 Always visit the kennel before booking

🐾 Look for places that ask for appropriate vaccinations and have good hygiene protocols

🐾 It’s a good idea to try a short stay for just a few days before leaving your pets for longer periods so you can decide if it is a good fit

Finding an injured bird can be worrisome, but you can make a difference by following these steps:

1) Assess the situation:

Birds often fall out of the nest on the first flight attempt, but they are doing well and continue to be fed by their parents. In this case, check if the parents are in the area and if the bird is really injured (look for blood or see if they seem very weak).

2) Handle with care:

If you need to intervene, use a towel or blanket to cover the bird and carefully place them in a cardboard box. If you have gardening gloves, wear them during the process.

3) Contact experts:

Call a local wildlife rescue centre for guidance on the next steps.

Important: Never attempt to feed or give water to an injured bird, as this may cause further damage. Always seek professional help before acting.

Ticks can transmit harmful diseases like Lyme disease, so it’s important to remove them as soon as possible.

👉️Use a tick-removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers, sliding the tool under the tick as close to your pet’s skin as you can.

👉 Twist gently in one direction until the tick releases itself. Avoid pulling upwards, squeezing, or crushing the tick, as this can leave parts of it behind.

👉️Once removed, drop the tick in alcohol and clean the bite area with antiseptic. Make a note of the date and keep an eye on your pet for any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, lethargy, or a lack of appetite.

If you’re unsure about removing a tick or notice unusual symptoms, get in touch with us for advice!

Have you ever heard of canine brucellosis? 🤔

This infectious disease is caused by a bacteria called Brucella canis and mainly affects the reproductive system, leading to infertility and pregnancy loss.

It’s also a zoonosis, meaning it can occasionally be transmitted to humans, but this is very rare.

Recently, there has been an increase in cases in the UK, mainly due to pets imported from other countries.

To protect our furry friends, it’s recommended to test any dogs entering the UK for this disease. Diagnosis can be done with a simple blood test, but since brucellosis can take up to 3 months to show up on a blood test, your dog might need to be re-tested after 3 months to ensure they’re free from infection.

Taking your dog on a walk is a joyful part of the day, but it’s important to stay alert and take precautions to prevent theft.

Breeds such as english, american or french bulldogs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Dachshunds or Shih Tzus are known to be targeted more often, so keep them close on your walks.

Here are some important tips:

✔ Always keep your dog on a lead in busy or unfamiliar areas

✔ Avoid walking in poorly lit or isolated places, especially at night

✔ Vary your walking routes and routines to avoid being predictable

✔ Be cautious when strangers show unusual interest in your dog

Keeping your dog safe starts with awareness. Let’s work together to reduce the risk of dog theft.

Blood tests can provide us with a wide range of information about our patients' health at that particular moment in time.

There are many situations where we might need to take a blood sample of your pet, such as:

🩸 Before your pet is under anaesthesia for a surgical procedure, to ensure the kidney and liver are working well

🩸As part of a routine check-up to get a good baseline of information

🩸 During senior health checks, so we can identify any health problems that might show up with ageing

🩸 Screening for health problems when your pet is feeling unwell

🩸 Monitoring long-term treatments to make sure medicines are working as intended

Rest assured that our team of vets and vet nurses is highly trained in taking blood samples and will ensure a stress-free procedure!

Chameleons have incredibly strong and powerful tongues. Their tongue can reach up to two times the length of their body, allowing them to catch their prey from afar.

A chameleon's tongue has a bone inside (the entoglossal process), surrounded by elastic tissue and special muscles which allow the tongue to fire at lightning speeds, grabbing insects on the sticky tip with total precision.

We’d love to see photos of your chameleons in the comments below! 📷

Keeping our pets safe starts with awareness.

Many common household items, foods, and even garden plants can be dangerous to our furry friends. Chocolate, cleaning products, and some human medications are toxic to pets and should always be kept out of reach.

Here are our top tips:

💊 Store cleaning products and medicines securely in locked cupboards.

🍫 Avoid leaving food or drinks unattended, especially if they contain chocolate, xylitol, grapes, alcohol or caffeine.

🪴 Check the plants in your home and garden to ensure they are non-toxic to pets.

If your pet shows signs of poisoning, such as vomiting, drooling, or sudden lethargy, please get in touch with us straight away. Acting quickly could save their life.

Separation anxiety is a common behavioural problem in dogs. 🐶

The best way to tackle it is to seek veterinary help early to avoid serious complications.

Trying to make your dog associate being alone with good things, such as new toys or delicious treats can be part of the strategy to fight separation anxiety. These should be removed as soon as you get home, though, so your dog understands they only get them when they’re home alone.

Have you had to deal with separation anxiety before? Let us know about your experience in the comments.

A**l glands are part of the exit portion of your dog’s digestive system, and they produce an important secretion that helps them communicate. 🐕

However, at times, these glands can get blocked due to overfilling or digestive issues like persistent diarrhoea. When this happens, the glands can get irritated and might even become prone to infections if not treated in time.

While setting up your bunnies’ enclosure, you may wonder whether to do it indoors or outdoors. The truth is there is no right answer to this question, as it’s important to find an arrangement that works for you and your bunnies! 🐰🐰

Here are some of the pros and cons of each option:

🏠 Indoors – protection from the elements and potential predators, closer proximity to the family vs smaller cages, contact with other pets.

🌳 Outdoors – A more natural environment, larger enclosures; vs difficulties controlling temperature and humidity conditions, exposure to parasites, diseases and possible predators.

What does your bunny enclosure look like? Show us in the comments!

We get it. No one loves picking up after their dog, but did you know that you’re preventing diseases if you do it?

Dog poo can carry parasites like Toxocara, which can harm other animals, and even people.

Here are some helpful tips:

🛍️ Always carry poo bags with you and keep extras in your pocket, bag, or coat. You’ll thank yourself later!

🗑️ Make sure to bin it afterwards. Don’t leave it bagged and abandoned.

Helping to keep our green spaces clean is a small step that makes a big difference for our community! No one wants to dodge landmines on their morning walk. 💩

Cats are very thorough about their hygiene and keeping their fur clean, so it’s not likely that they’ll need help with bathing! 😺

Exceptions would be if, for example, your cat gets their fur muddy while out and about, or if they have difficulties reaching certain areas of their body, which is common if they are overweight or into their golden years.

Excessive bathing can also lead to the loss of the skin and coat’s natural barrier functions and even cause local irritation, so don’t hesitate to talk to us if you don’t know whether to bathe your cat or not!
