🐾 Happy Golden Retriever Day! 🐾

Time to celebrate the golden goofballs of the dog world! 🌟 While currently we only have one full Golden Retriever who trails with us - Noodle - we also have our very own Golden Retriever x Labrador, Freida! She may not have the classic golden coat (being black, she often gets mistaken for a Labrador), but she’s all heart and just as lovable. 💛🖤

Mantrailing is a fantastic way to give Golden Retrievers a job they’ll love! With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and natural scenting abilities, they take to the game brilliantly. It’s also a great confidence booster - just ask Noodle! She’s only done two sessions, but she’s already showing how much she loves the game, and we can see a real improvement in her confidence. 🎉

On Saturday we were joined by Apollo the ‘Goberian’ (Golden Retriever x Husky) for his introduction to Mantrailing - proving that Goldens and their mixes can thrive with their noses too! 🐶💨

This little Jack Russell x Pug has just completed his Introduction to Scent Work with us! 👃✨ He gave it his all and made some great progress learning how to use his nose in a more structured way.

Next up? Mantrailing! 🎉 Theo will be joining us soon for his Mantrailing Introduction to help build up his focus outside and put those sniffing skills to work in a new environment. We can't wait to see how he gets on! 🐶💪

🥜🐾 Happy National Peanut Butter Day! 🐾🥜

Two peanut butter fiends - Archie, the Border Terrier, and Peanut, our very own German Shepherd! These two are united by their love for peanut butter—and they agree it’s the ultimate reward after a hard day of sniffing and trailing. 🐶🍯

But did you know that licking peanut butter (or any safe, dog-friendly spread) has benefits beyond just being delicious?

✅ It helps release feel-good endorphins, helping dogs like Archie and Peanut relax after the excitement of a trail.

✅ Licking is also a calming activity, perfect for bringing arousal levels down and helping them wind down after using their brains and noses to the max.

✅ Plus, it’s a fun and rewarding way to keep dogs engaged, reinforcing the bond between dog and handler.

When used in moderation and as part of a balanced diet, plain peanut butter (with no added sugar, xylitol, or salt) can be a great protein-packed treat. Just be sure to check the label before sharing! 🥜✨

We're having a snow day! ❄️ While it’s tempting to let your dogs frolic freely, it’s essential to keep their safety and comfort in mind. Here are some winter tips, especially for dogs with arthritis, injuries, or joint concerns:

1️⃣ Protect Their Paws

Snow and ice can irritate paw pads, causing cracking or cuts. Rinse paws after walks and apply a dog-friendly paw balm to soothe and protect. Check for snowballs forming between pads, which can be uncomfortable and cause slipping. Consider dog boots for extra protection, particularly for dogs with arthritis or recovering from injuries.

2️⃣ Stay Hydrated

Dogs can get just as dehydrated in winter as in summer, so ensure they always have access to fresh water. Eating snow can lower body temperature and upset stomachs, so offer clean water instead.

3️⃣ Keep Them Warm

Small breeds, short-haired dogs, puppies, seniors, and dogs with arthritis or injuries benefit from wearing well-fitted, insulated coats to retain body heat. Always dry your dog thoroughly after snowy walks to prevent chills or worsening arthritis symptoms.

4️⃣ Arthritis and Joint Care

Cold weather can stiffen joints and worsen arthritis. Limit time outside and opt for low-impact indoor activities like hydrotherapy or physiotherapy exercises. Ice and snow can increase the risk of slips and injuries, especially for dogs with mobility issues. Hydrotherapy can relieve joint pain and stiffness while keeping your dog fit during the winter months.

5️⃣ Visibility is Key

Use reflective leads, collars, and coats, or LED lights to keep your dog visible to cars and other walkers. Bright coats also help you spot your dog in snowy environments if they are off-lead.

6️⃣ Avoid Overexertion

Icy ground can strain muscles and tendons. Be mindful of how much exercise your dog is getting. For senior dogs or those with medical conditions, shorter, more frequent walks are safer than long outings.

7️⃣ Mental Stimulation Matters

The cold weather shouldn’t stop enrichment! Scent work is a fantastic way to keep your dog mentally stimulated while limiting physical strain!
