Dogmann

Dogmann Our goal is to provide you with the skills to understand and communicate with your dog. Dogs do spea Why choose me?
(13)

We have developed our training methods around this philosophy using a positive reward based training leading to fun games for both you and your dog. More fun means more learning which will help you continually develop the lifelong bond between you and your dog. I have helped hundreds of people that needed behavioural modification programmes for their dogs because they have not addressed problems t

hat many dogs have, just because they are young and giddy. The use of incorrect training methods or complete lack of any training at all can also lead to great stress which ultimately leads to the dog being put into rescue. This has all been achieved using positive reward based training methods that are now scientifically proven to help our dogs learn and interact with us and create a bond like no other. So many dogs just simply don’t ‘GROW OUT OF IT!’ so don’t rely on that happening, be proactive and enjoy your dogs from the outset. "Prevention is better than cure!"

A good trainer will teach you how to avoid problems that ALL dogs have or might have in the future, not just teach them how to ‘SIT’, ‘LAY DOWN’, ‘GIVE PAW’. They will also help you build a bond between you and your dog that you wouldn’t believe was possible. One-to-one sessions when and where you need them

This woman in Wetherby moved her GSD away from the dogs I had out; my Dobermann, GSD and a Kangal.

The dog seen running here had already been allowed to run up to this lady causing her greyhound to react.

The lady struggled to call her GSD back but it did eventually come back to her and she took it back to her car. Obviously the GSD decided it hadn’t had enough and bolted back from the car park to tackle the greyhound flipping it in the air.

The owner of the GSD didn’t even apologise or see if the other dog had been hurt and simply drove off.

Some excellent advice regarding insurance which all dog owners should have especially as Dogs Trust do it for £25 for a year!!!

AMERICAN BULLY XL OWNERS INSURANCE/NEUTERING PLEASE READ THIS POST

INSURANCE
It has come to our attention that owners of American Bully XL are trying to find insurers for their dogs in order to comply with the terms of the upcoming inclusion of the type on the list of prohibited breeds. It seems many are under the understanding that
this is health and liability insurance, However for the purposes of Section 1 dogs it is PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE which is a requirement in order to comply. Dogs Trust have an excellent membership scheme that we would recommend owners of all breeds to be part of in any event, it costs 25 pounds per year to become a member and the owner is covered by 3rd party liability insurance as a member benefit which meets the standard required to register the four breeds currently covered by the legislation. This is for ALL dogs owned by that member regardless of breed up to a limit so if you have more than one prohibited type to be registered to you then only one membership is required. To owners of a dog already registered as one of the four prohibited types and who are already dogs trust members and also own an American Bully XL your membership should already cover you. If you already have Dogs Trust membership, or once you join then you do not need to have a copy of your policy, you are not taking out insurance you are becoming a member and the insurance is a benefit of that membership. Once the government opens registration email Dogs Trust with your dogs microchip number and ask them to confirm to you by return email that you are insured and that the dog concerned identified by its microchip number is covered by your liabilty cover as a member then forward this to DEFRA along with your registration application and proof of neutering. The link to become a member is in the comments below

NEUTERING
If you have already, or are planning to get your dog neutered prioer to any announcement of the transition period by the government please ensure that your dogs microchip is registered on your dogs record at the vets undertaking the operation as you will need to provide PROOF of compliance to DEFRA

If you require any further advice please contact us and we will do our best to help.

XL BULLY BAN: WHAT WE CURRENTLY KNOW

On 10th September 2023 the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, posted on her Twitter page:-

“The American XL Bully is a clear and lethal danger to our communities, particularly children. We can’t go on like this. I have commissioned urgent advice on banning them”

This was followed on 15th September 2023 by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, who said he would ban the breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 “by the end of the year”. DEFRA subsequently issued a statement that evening saying that the Environment Secretary will:-

1. Convene experts to define the American XL Bully ‘in the next week’
2. The Government will then lay a Statutory Instrument to ‘add it to the list of dogs banned under the Act. This will make it an offence to own, breed, gift or sell an XL Bully’ by the end of the year

DEFRA went on to say that there will be a transition period requiring owners to ‘come forward’ and that details of this will be provided ‘in due course’.

The UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Christine Middlemiss, is quoted on the BBC as saying on 16th September 2023 that the transition (which she called an “amnesty”) will require owners to register their dogs and take action including requiring the dog to be neutered, on a lead and muzzled in public, as well a requirement for the dog to be insured.

It's hard to be too precise about the next steps but the following is our ‘best guess’, pending further Government announcements:-

Q) Do owners of XL Bullies have to do anything now?
A) No, but it would be advisable to get your dog used to wearing a muzzle, as well as to get it trained, neutered, and insured.
N.B. When your dog is neutered, please ask the vet to make a record of your dog’s microchip number. For insurance it is likely to be third-party liability insurance required, not healthcare.

Q) How do I know if my dog is going to be on the banned list?
A) We shall have to wait to see the definition that is adopted.

Q) How can I get my dog exempted?
A) We’re not sure yet, but it seems as though it’ll be by an owner-led registration scheme which will probably require you to complete an application form, provide evidence of compliance with the conditions and pay for the details to be on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

Q) What if someone misses the deadline to have the dog exempted?
A) The owner (+ if different the person in charge of the dog) will be committing an offence punishable by a prison sentence of up to 6 months and/or an unlimited fine. The dog will be seized by the Police and there is likely to be a presumption that it shall be put down unless you can prove that it is not a danger to public safety. You may also be required to prove that there was good reason why you failed to comply with the amnesty.

Q) What will be the conditions.
A) If it follows the current position for an exempted dog, the requirements will be:-

• The dog is neutered
• The dog is microchipped
• Third party insurance is obtained (+ continues to be in force)
• A certificate of exemption is issued
• Keep the dog at the same address as the registered keeper except for up to 30 days in 12 months
• Notify the Agency of any change of address
• Notify the Agency of the death or export of the dog
• Keep the dog muzzled and on a lead when in a public place
• Keep the dog in sufficiently secure conditions to prevent its escape

Breach of any of these conditions will mean that the dog is no longer exempted.

Q) What are the offences likely to be?
A)
• Having possession or custody of the dog if it has not been exempted within the amnesty period
• To breed (or breed from) the dog
• To sell or exchange the dog
• To make or offer to make a gift of the dog
• Allow the dog to be in a public place without being muzzled and kept on a lead
• Abandon the dog or allow it to stray

Q) Will a rescue be able to rehome an XL Bully?
A) When the ban comes into force, unless the existing rules are changed, a rescue won’t be able to rehome an XL Bully unless it is going to someone who already has or has had responsibility for the dog, and in any event this would have to be approved by a Court.

This summary was produced on 16th September 2023 but this is a fast changing situation so you must not rely on it as legal advice.

For those of you stating that it’s not the dogs fault, ultimately yes you are right because we breed these dogs, but you do get wrong uns and as much as you can improve dogs with training and love, ultimately genetics can have a MASSIVE impact on a dogs behaviour.

You can look at what the dogs were bred for historically and then look at training techniques used but ultimately if you breed an unstable dog with another unstable dog, the likely hood of getting a good litter is pretty much zero. You can only polish a turd so much.

You can also get a great mating on paper but the pups just don’t match what is expected. That’s life.

The problem here is breeders have just line bred awful lines for temperament and just gone for size and looks etc. The frightening thing with the XL Bully, and I’ve trained a fair few, is the prevalence of poor breeding.

If you follow this link you will see the ticking time bomb that the poor XL Bully has become , through no fault of its own and unless the Government start to come down hard on breeders and owners then they will just move onto the next dog to weaponise.

I really do feel for owners of XL bullies and it’s a scary time knowing that your dogs can be seized at any time.

Do not bury your head in the sand and do something about it now. If your dog is overly friendly and jumps up to say hello or at the other end of the scale is nervous then start now with training.

Muzzle train them as they will have to wear one whenever they are out of the house. Plus neuter or castrate otherwise they will not be able to be exempt.

With Cerberus on its way please read this thoroughly and share as it could save somebody a lot of heartache and a dog a horrible death.

Since it was launched in 2015, our webinar Rethinking Heat Injury in Working Dogs has been viewed 3329 times! It was based on our study that was published in thr Journal of Special Operations Medicine in January 2012, and since its launch we’ve updated it three times (2016, 2019, and 2021) whenever significant new information became available from research. We’re currently working on the next update to be released later this year, but in the meantime, you can view it at our website for free! www.vettacgroup.com, training and support, web-based training.
