Are you ridding your horse more?

Are you planning competitions or longer hacks?
If the answer is yes to the above you should start the season with a muscle skeletal check for your horse. Horse can develop muscle tension for many reason but winter can be the worse. Due to longer time stable, eating from hay nets, walking through mood, and less regular exercise. This may have coursed, altered movement pattern, muscle atrophy and tension.

Muscle skeletal check and treatment can help spot any miner issue and help prevent bigger soft tissue injury, make your horse happier in there work and improve the chances of a successful summer season without any down time due to injury.

You also need to look at your horse as a hole. Change in diet and work load will affect your horse saddle fit book an appointment with a qualified master saddler is also really important. You should have a saddle fitter every 6 to 12 months your saddle fitter can advise better on this. Also dentistry when was the last time your horse had their teeth checked? This should be done at least every 12 months more if recommended by your dentist or vet.

There will also be lots of dietary changes happening its important to introduce them slowly to allow your horse digestive system to cope with the changes.

I have spent the winter getting the wait of my cob Jazz through diet and using less rugs and I am now upping her exercise to help keep her summer wait controlled. She is a good due and will be muzzled through out the summer. Whereas my old girl lulu I use the summer to help her put wait on to get through the next winter. Each horse is different make sure you do what is right for them and you for the summer ahead.

My girls loved there snow day and the sun this afternoon so much so they decided they would rather be out all day. So they got a high fibre feed at lunch time and went back out for a few more hours. It's important to make sure horse don't go with out food for more than 4 hours at a time.

My little guinea pig where not so keen on the snow and prefer running round on my kitchen floor.

*** WHEN AN APPARENTLY SUBTLE COLIC IS OFTEN THE WORST TYPE ***

This is a hard hitting post, for which I make no apologies. This afternoon/evening, I have put to sleep the worst case of colic I have seen in my 13 years in practice. Was the horse rolling around on the floor? No. Doesn’t that mean it’s not colic then?! NO!!!!!!

This is something ALL HORSE OWNERS MUST KNOW. A horse does not have to be thrashing around and getting up and down to show it has colic! Why not? Firstly, you may have not seen that stage. You turn up to your horse in the morning. He is standing very quietly and doesn’t want his breakfast. He has trashed his bed and looks tired. Call the vet!!!!! He has colic.

Why can a horse suddenly stop rolling/thrashing about and look slightly better? Worst case scenario is that the intestine or stomach have now ruptured. The immense pain caused by the intestine being strangulated will subside when the intestine rupture. The pain will gradually increase again as the horse becomes septic.

A horse may not ever have rolled/gone down with colic. All horses have different pain thresholds. Some will just stand still, and hope that by not moving the pain will go away. It may be too painful for the horse to move at all, if the intestine is close to rupture.

This evening, the horse’s re**um was full of blood and ruptured colon. The horse’s mouth was ice cold and her mucous membranes were purple. She was reluctant to walk, but could walk, and wasn’t going down. I very quickly euthanised her.

Whatever the cause or reason, the incredibly important take home message, is that a horse does not necessarily have to be rolling or going down, or even pawing at the ground, for him to have severe intestinal or gastric issues causing colic. Every horse owner should know that if their horse is abnormally quiet/dull, and very definitely if he doesn’t want to eat, or is picking at bits of food with no enthusiasm, they must CALL THE VET.

Please share, and make sure everyone at your yard, or all of your friends with horses know. Do not leave a horse to rupture his or her intestine because the horse is simply quiet and you think he/she hasn’t got colic.

Only just finished my calls and got back to my yard, to be greeted by the most beautiful sunset to brighten up a tough afternoon/evening.

Now we are able to get out and about with our horses more, it’s important to make sure they’re in tip top condition. My ponies have had a month of being pampered; seeing the dentist, saddle fitter and of course a session from me. It’s so important to have every thing checked.
There are a number of benefits to having your horse’s muscular skeletal health checked regularly throughout the competition season. It will allow any potential problems to be spotted early on, reducing the risk of injury and lameness. Allowing you to ride and compete through the season.

Emma’s Animal Therapy

Emma has had a passion for animals from a young age, taking on her first horse at the age of 17. This lead her to want to learn more about horses, studying for a BSc (Hons) in Equine Therapy & Rehabilitation alongside training with the Equine Massage Academy to gain a level 5 Equine Massage Therapy for Health and Performance qualification. Following this, Emma has gone on to study a level 5 Canine massage therapy with the Academy of Integrative Animal Therapy.

Lulu was the reason i decided to become a massage therapist. As i wanted to help her, she has had many injuries and problems and has developed arthritis in her later years. As she aged i found the physio was not right for her and this sent me in search of an alternative therapy this is where i came a cross massage and its many benefits.
