Top tips for keeping your hens cool in this heat?

These are some basics, but I am sure you have lots of idea, so please share them with us.

1. SHADE - ensure your hens have access to plenty of shade throughout the day.
2. WATER - Change the drinking water through the day to get rid of the warm and stale and bring in the new and cool.
3. ICE - adding a washing up bowl of cold water with some ice cubes floating is both entertaining and cooling. Add some frozen peas for extra fun. I have a few who enjoy a paddle.
4. FREEZE some empty pop bottles of water and lay them on their side around the run. Hens can lay against them to cool down.
5. SPRAY the floor of the run, or some grass in the shade to cool it down even further.
6. RED MITE are LOVING this weather. Use every trick you know to keep them at bay. They are difficult to completely eradicate, so don't despair when you see them after you have treated, just know that you are reducing numbers, and that can only be a good thing.

AVIAN INFLUENZA
There have been a number of confirmed cases of Avian Influenza in Englandin the past few weeks and a new Avian Influenza Protection Zone (APIZ) has been declared throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?
You need to increase biosecurity in your own flock, but at the moment, there is no housing order, (AKA, Flockdown) so your birds may continue to free range if you choose to do so, although reduced access to wild birds WILL help protect your flock. Please visit the government website for full details of other measures you will need to take https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu

WHATS DOES THIS MEAN FOR REHOMING?
We take this current situation very seriously and always act responsibly, keeping up to date with any developments. As we are not operating within any of the Prevention Zones (those within a 3km radius of any of the areas of disease outbreak) and as all birds are coming from a single premises on each of our dates, we can continue rehoming.

The farmers need us and the hens need YOU!

As an organisation, we already practice strict biosecurity, from spraying the wheels of our vehicles prior to going onto the farms, turning up with perfectly clean crates, using supplied boot dips and wearing clean clothing.

In addition:
* We will be providing DEFRA approved disinfectant boot dips at all our collection points.
* We will be sanitising the ground we put the birds on both before and after the rehoming
* The flocks we are rehoming will be checked for health and wellness prior to us collecting them.
* All rehomers will be emailed with additional biosecurity advice.

We are confident about continuing, and we hope you are too :)

Reservations are still open for our upcoming dates, so please visit the website to reserve https://freshstartforhens.co.uk
