After 20 years in general dog training, I’m thrilled to announce my new specialisation in behaviour training for agility dogs 💜

Officially introducing Beyond Agility – a venture that still welcomes pet dogs! Agility dogs need a solid foundation, so I continue to offer all the basics: puppy training, basic obedience, recall, loose lead walking, and solutions for common behaviour challenges such as reactivity.

While I’m not taking new clients for Dogmanchester, everyone is invited to join the Beyond Agility membership! 🌟 The membership offers one to one coaching, in which we will work through your personalised training plan one step at a time via daily check-ins on WhatsApp. With the use of videos I will be able to hear what you are saying, see how your dog is responding and pinpoint any areas that require adjustments to achieve your goals, as if I’m there with you in-person. As a member you will also receive access to an information library containing training notes and demo videos, a friendly and supportive community on Facebook, and the opportunity to earn back the cost of training by referring others to the membership via the affiliate programme.

What my dogs have taught me about agility

💚 Hershey (Dalmatian cross) - the one who taught me to never give up.
My first dog, who preferred to say hello to the judge and leave the ring to explore the show grounds. However, we persisted and towards the end of his career we achieved multiple clean and qualifying runs!

❤️ Penn (Coonhound cross) - the one who taught me the benefits of agility for confidence building.
Adopted from the shelter as a challenging teenager with fear-aggressive behaviours, we started agility as a fun activity without realising how much it would help to boost his confidence. We went from grade 1 to grade 4 within a few months and he has since became my “easy” dog that I can take anywhere without issues.

🩷 Ellie (Border Collie cross) - the one who taught me not all dogs enjoy agility and that’s okay.
Easy to train with a natural ability, I had high hopes for Ellie’s agility career. As a nervous dog due to a lack of socialisation during her first 8 weeks, I expected agility to have the same effect on her as it did with Penn. But she had other plans, as she made it clear she HATED agility by running back to the van as soon as we finished a sequence without even accepting her reward. I quickly retired her and she has since enjoyed life as an active pet.

🩵 Eric (Border Collie) - the one who taught me all about the importance of behaviours and skills “Beyond Agility”.
As a third dog and with challenging behaviour issues such as reactivity to people, dogs and sounds, I didn’t bond with him until we started agility training at 2 years old. Becky Sinclair introduced us to a new style of handling, foundation training, canine conditioning and the importance of regularly visiting the physio. Throughout his agility career, my skills, knowledge and realisation of everything that is required for an agility dog behind the scenes grew to where I am today. Plus, we now share an incredible bond, which would not have developed without agility.

Beyond Agility provides specialised behavioural training in an agility environment to improve performance in the ring.

Run by behaviourist Erica van Manen, sessions are run alongside agility classes and workshops to provide a real-life setting for training behaviour around agility. You will learn how to manage and reduce behaviours caused by overexcitement or anxiety, as well as improving essential skills such as toy play, focus, self control, restraint, settling, startlines and queueing.

There are currently weekly sessions available at Turvey MK43 8DH.
