Today was week 3 on my Puppy Foundation Course. All progressing well. Lead walking is one of the hardest things to perfect. This takes time and effort.

We have now finished for Christmas. I have given my class ideas to keep pups out of mischief over the holiday period. I’m looking forward to seeing them all in 2 weeks time. Sorry no photos today. 🥶

I had my third home visit to Arlo this week. I did a pre- puppy coming home visit, one a couple of days after Arlo arrived and one now he can go out and about.

With all of the above I also offer support over WhatsApp between lessons or 1-2-1’s.

Sorry for the lack of Facebook posts this week.

Matt has been really unwell with a winter bug! He’s is feeling much better and is back to work today.

Sadly his right hand man Storm has been very poorly this week too.

On Thursday Storm went to the vets with a blackthorn injury to his paw which he was prescribed antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. Thursday evening it turned very nasty and ended up having an overnight stay at Rutland Veterinary Centre Uppingham.

It was such a worry incase it had turned to Sepsis but thankfully it hadn’t.

Storm is now on rest, a cocktail of medication, a cone of shame and lots of TLC.

Hopefully he will be back with Matt for lessons in a few a weeks.

Black lab puppy Harris came for his third one-to-one session today.

He is just over five months old and is making excellent progress. His heeling both on and off lead is great. He works well on sits, stays and the stop & recall whistle.

Harris is also a keen and reliable retriever, so he is in a very good position for his working training to step up in the new year.

Yesterday was the start of my new Puppy Foundation Course.

A lovely group with gorgeous dogs. All did very well considering it was the first lesson! I am looking forward to seeing how they progress.

This afternoon I did my second home visit with Arlo. He will be going ‘out out’ soon so we discussed how to deal with this, things to do and things to avoid!

Arlo’s owners have followed my advice on crate training and toilet training. He is very happy to go in his crate when given the command, he even takes himself off there as they have taught this all very positively. A cosy snuggly safe space!

Yesterday after a busy day of gundog lessons I finished the day with a one to one lesson with border terrier Mabel and her owner.

Mabel can be very reactive around dogs. A quick few minutes with Storm showed me that she is just super friendly and just can’t contain her excitement and frustration.

By the end of the session she was able to walk quietly and sensibly along the ‘Labrador slalom’ of some of our dogs.

We also worked on a few ball games to help her with patience. She is a very sweet little dog and great to see her make good progress.

It has been a weekend of puppies!

After my pre puppy visit last week to Arlo’s owners, I did a home visit yesterday to see how they were getting on.

It was good to hear they have listened and he is crate trained and he is more or less toilet trained! 👏

Today was the last of my 6 week Puppy Foundation Course for this group.

I’ve had so much fun with this group! I was really sad it was the last session. All have made fantastic progress. We have worked through problems that have arisen with good results. Always remember the lead in the pocket exercise 🤣👌(Just missing Ozzy today who couldn’t attend today.)

It’s good to see that most of the group are progressing to our obedience with an introduction to gundog training.

Those not following that path can attend our obedience training workshops next year. Dates and time to be confirmed.

On Friday evening I did a home visit for a family to get them ready for their new Labrador puppy arriving this Wednesday and I will be going back this Friday to see how they are getting on.

This evening I did a home visit to Murphy the Cocker Spaniel and his family. We chatted about puppy behaviours. Great session, such a responsive pup!
I look forward to seeing how this little chap gets on.

5 month old Georgie (and her owners Alex & Lisa) are regular 1 to 1 clients. Georgie is a daughter of our dog Sharpe, so it’s always great to see her.

One of the things we worked on today was remaining calm on the lead around another dog. So she got the chance to work with her Dad!

I also had Brooke (Sharpe’s mum) in the truck so we had three generations at the field.

I was really proud today, as a labrador we bred had her first day on a shoot, and I was able to see how she got on.

Pepper (Spinnakeu Raven) handled the day very well. She was steady and obedient, not chasing pheasants, a hare and a deer! She also handled her first ‘real’ retrieve like a pro!

Sam (& his partner Jade) have trained with us through puppy classes, one-to-one sessions and group gundog sessions. As a trainer it’s so rewarding to see all the hard work come to fruition.

They have come so far from the first time they came to Rachel’s puppy class with Eva (their older dog) in a pink harness!😉😂

I know that Pepper’s brother (Storm) is already working, and I’m looking forward to seeing another brother, Clay (who also trains with us) soon.

An enjoyable combination of individual training sessions today. Springer spaniels Benji and Rocco and Spanish water dog Sofia all did sessions focussing on training and engagement through ball work. Little Ava, the labrador puppy came along for a puppy training session.

Just for a change the weather was just about perfect for a training session!

Roll call time! As you can see, Storm thinks this is completely beneath him!🙄😂

Storm & Sharpe. Away from their day job, helping me with lessons. Out doing what they love in the shooting field.

With a new puppy the training process starts all over again. Sully is now 10 and half weeks old. I’ve taken him to my training field a few times now. This was his first time exploring the rougher grass. He has got used to travelling in a small crate in the truck, and will even have a sleep in there while I do a lesson. As you can see I’m already letting him off lead in the field - in fact he hasn’t even seen a lead yet. I’m able to develop his recall without the distraction of other people and dogs. He is already getting more confident in going further from me, he is so young I’m still assessing his developing character. In the next week or so I’ll be introducing him to a lead and starting to teach him how to walk with me. He will also gradually start the process of being taken out onto the streets to learn about traffic and passing people and dogs.

New Monday class starts soon! Details later tonight.
