Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”

Understanding Drive in Dogs: Why It Matters 🐾
Ever wondered why your dog seems laser-focused on chasing squirrels or can’t resist a game of tug? It all comes down to drive—a dog's natural, instinctual motivation that influences how they engage with the world.

What Are Drives?
Dogs are hardwired with certain drives that guide their behaviour. Here are some of the most common ones:

🐕 Prey Drive: The urge to chase moving objects—think squirrels, toys, or even shadows.

🍖 Food Drive: A love for food that makes treat-based training so effective.

🎾 Play Drive: The joy of playful activities like fetch or tug.

🐑 Herding Drive: The instinct to control movement, often seen in herding breeds.

👃 Hunt Drive: A passion for searching and finding, perfect for scent work or tracking.

💪 Defence Drive: The natural urge to protect themselves or their "pack."

💞 Pack Drive: A desire for social connection and working cooperatively with their humans or other dogs.

Why Does Drive Matter?
Understanding your dog's drives is the key to unlocking their potential! Whether you’re training for better behaviour or engaging in fun activities, tapping into their natural instincts helps make the process more effective and rewarding for both of you.

For example:
➡️ High prey drive? Channel it into activities like lure coursing or structured fetch games.
➡️ Food-motivated? Use tasty treats to teach new skills.
➡️ Love to play? Turn tug or fetch into a training reward.

Our Training Approach
At ELA Dog Dynamics and Training, we tailor every training plan to your dog’s unique drives and personality. By working with your dog’s instincts instead of against them, we help you build a strong, lasting bond.

Some of us were helping dogs and owners today - not these two though 😡

And the back drop is basically an advert for every organisation that fails dogs on the daily too!

As Christmas approaches I know the urge to slow down and relax will be taking over some of you. You may get the urge to be abit lazy with the typical “but it’s Christmas” trust me I have done it😅.

However when it comes to your dogs they don’t know it’s Christmas and their needs still to be met. Make sure you keep training and stimulating your dogs over the festive period to avoid any issues in the new year.

It’s always a good time to train your dog, it can be done while you have your coffee in the morning or having spare 15 minutes anywhere. A trained and stimulated dog is a dog that is happy and well behaved.

Something I want to talk about today is ethics when it comes to a dog having a serious health condition. It’s something that I’ve had to start thinking about unfortunately recently.

It comes down to the question is it right to keep a dog for our own reasons when they cannot no longer do what they have been shown they can could do. It’s something that I have been thinking about, and to be honest I don’t think it’s right. If your dog has been shown it can play fetch and then despite it being a central part of its enjoyment then no longer being able do this as its job due to a serious debilitating health condition, is it right for us to keep the dog alive and medicated sat on a bed for the rest of the time that remains to our pet?

It’s difficult question and ethically I struggle to answer it from an emotive perspective despite my own thoughts as a trainer. It’s something that I don’t think anyone has an easy answer for. It comes down to quality of life and what sort of life will a dog that’s trained to work or do a task have when it can no longer be stimulated with that or anything similar? Will the dog be happy? Will it be fulfilled? Or are we prolonging their lives for our own selfish, emotive and human reasons?

Food for thought guys.

Please give this a read everyone if it’s the only one of my posts you ever pay attention too.

A truly tragic and horrific case to read.
A seven month old baby girl killed by the family pet in a hideous incident in their home.
The little one leant on to the dog as she was toddling and was bitten on the neck and very sadly died. A stark reminder of how fast dogs can turn, How quickly something can escalate and how fatal one bite can be.

A dog will correct other dog’s behaviour with a snap or bite and in an agitated state of mind will lash out before investigating the situation. The Malinois was fixated on a bag when the baby touched him, both parents were in the vicinity and present when the dog bit.

Owners who have asked for advice with young babies around dogs know I am incredibly strict and have a 0 tolerance for babies/toddlers/young children being next to, touching, climbing on, leaning on, sitting with or “petting” a dog and this is the worst case example of exactly why I am so adamant about it!
Dogs shouldn’t have any access to young children who are crawling for exactly this reason! It’s so fast!! And in this case the dog had been seen by behaviourists for “dominating” behaviour in the months before the incident.
I would have absolutely tied the owner down to ensuring the dog and baby were never in the room together whether or not the parents were present for exactly this reason so maybe some owners out there who think I’ve been too harsh with rules around babies will understand why now!!
“Oh we never leave them alone together” is absolutely NOT good enough!!!! The parents were right next to the dog and baby!! Please remember this!!

Everyone thinks being a dog behaviourist is a dream job working with dogs but I have to deal with child bites and injuries every week and it’s always upsetting and highly emotional!! The only way to deal with this is to PREVENT!
And if you need to hear it here’s your reminder!
Dogs are NOT a furbaby
Dogs are NOT thrilled for the arrival of your baby
Dogs are NOT protecting your baby
Dogs are NOT “kissing” your child
Dogs are an ANIMAL
Dogs are an apex predator in your home!

Please no hate or comments about the parents in this case they have suffered enough and I hope this post may just save another child from injury!
