Our last post for Safe at Christmas week is about the weather! Winter is upon us, out come the big jumpers, coats and boots. The ground can be slippy, it's raining or damp, and we may have snow and ice, plus rising fuel costs in our homes.

We are keeping ourselves warm and safe as best we can, but what about our animals?

🐇 Outdoor animals - rabbits, Guinea pigs, hens - make sure their runs, pens and beds are kept free of damp and drafts. If you use hay, check each day that it doesn't get wet or damp. It won't dry, it will just stay wet and cold, so if it gets damp it must be changed immediately.

Where possible provide a cover or insulation for their homes.

Make sure water is always clear and accessible, and if the weather gets very cold, bring them inside.

🐈 Cats - some cats stay home and don't go out, so make sure their beds have extra cosy blankets away from damp and drafts. Those who do go out, keep them in on very cold or wet days, and dry them down when they come home. Wrap them in a nice warm towel or blanket.

Keep antifreeze well out of their way. If they ingest it, it will poison them. Check your car for cats, they may be hiding in the engine for warmth.

If you have an outdoor cat, check their shelter regularly and ensure they are free of damp and wet.

🐕 Dogs - despite what people may say, dogs do not have to go out each day, especially if the weather is bad. It's okay for them to remain safe and cosy in the house during nasty winter days.

In the home, provide them with extra blankets and a cosy bed. If your dog is happy to wear one, provide them with a jumper especially if they have short fur.

When out, put them in a waterproof coat, especially if you have a young pup, a short-haired dog or an ill or elderly dog.

You can get paw balm too to soothe their paws. If the road has been gritted, make sure to wash their paws off when you get home. Dry them all over when they get home, or invest in a cosy drying coat to put them in.

🐦And please don't forget to provide food and water for wild birds.

⭐☃ What have been the most useful tips from our Safe at Christmas week so far?
☃⭐

Today we are looking at stockings for our pets. It can be so tempting to grab one from a local pet store, but unfortunately many of them contain products we don't want our pets to have.

🚫 Rawhide is full of glue and dye, it is cowskin treated and dried out. Large pieces can break off and cause a choking hazard. It takes a long time to digest and can even be poisonous in some cases.

🚫 Dentastix are full of nasty ingredients and they don't help their teeth. They are more likely to make them sick!

🚫 Check how different products have been made and how far they've travelled.

🚫 Treats that have a high (or any) dye content are not great.

🚫 The toys in some of these stockings are often cheaply made, break easily and can cause choking or a blockage.

So what to do instead?

🎁 Buy natural
🎁 Or make your own - there are lots of lovely safe recipes available

If you make up your own stocking for you pet you can choose what to put in it. Which is also a lot more fun!

We've talked about what our pets cannot have at Christmas, but what can they enjoy alongside us?

You can give them some of these as treats, or you can make them up their own little Christmas dinner. Remember though that new foods should be introduced slowly and in small amounts, not all of a sudden on Christmas Day:

🐾 Green beans
🥕 Carrots
🐾 Parsnips
🥕 Swede
🐾 Peas
🥕 Brussel sprouts

🥔 Potatoes - new or mashed without butter
🥔 Sweet potatoes

🐟 Salmon
🍖 Lamb
🍗 Turkey
🍗 Chicken
(all of the above should be boneless and without gravy)

What will your pets be eating on Christmas Day?

Whilst it is exciting for us at Christmas time, it can be very stressful for our pets. Lots of new items and bright lights, huge excitement and giddiness. New visitors in their space, loud music, loud people, or our pets might actually be left alone more than usual. Lots of different foods, maybe loud noises outside – there is so much going on.

Recognise when your pet is stressed – this may be revealed through the animal either hiding away or displaying very excited behaviour. They may be unusually fearful and aggressive, pant a lot or go off their food.

Provide your pet with a safe space to go to, and make sure their bed is kept out of the way if there are festivities. Ideally you could make them a cosy den in a safe corner. Somewhere they know they can go to and not be harassed. So that your pet can decompress if they need to.

Try your best to stick to the animal’s feeding, walking and sleeping routine to help them to cope with the changes. If you have an already anxious pet companion, try to resist the urge to dress them up. I know it’s tempting, and they look adorable, but this isn’t the time for them to be forced into a crazy cute outfit for a photo.

🎁⭐ All this week I am talking about keeping our pets Safe at Christmas. ⭐🎁

Festive plants – be aware of the holly and the ivy, but also poinsettia, mistletoe and potpourri – things that might not normally be in your house. Not only are they toxic, but they are new and exciting, so pets will be keen to explore them. Best to keep these plants up high and out of reach.

⭐☃ Today's Safe at Christmas tips are all about Christmas food and drink ☃⭐

Let’s start with chocolate. It’s easily found on a Christmas tree, in a box or in a calendar. As we know, human chocolate is toxic for pets so please be careful with it.

Festive alcoholic drinks are easily forgotten on a low surface. As most are sweet they will be tempting for our pets to take a taste – especially if you have pets who are counter surfers.

Other foods that are no good for our pets include Christmas pudding and mince pies, onions, garlic and nuts. Please don’t be tempted to give them a festive treat. A treat that is made for them is much kinder!

☃️🎁 Welcome to Safe at Christmas week at the Dog Lodge! 🎁☃️

All this week I am going to be talking about ways to keep your pets safe and happy this festive season. Starting today with the Christmas tree!

Real trees are toxic to animals - and watch for those pine needles being eaten or getting stuck in their paws!

The decorations can also be very tempting for both cats and dogs, to play with or to eat. And of course we don't want gifts being opened early by our pets, or being eaten by them!

We found out the hard way that it's easy for dogs to bite through the cables of Christmas lights. So it might be an idea to put up a little makeshift fence around the tree.

Here is the lovely Rocket graduating from puppy class with the rest of his new dog buddies at Dogwarts Dog Training on Monday night. (He’s in picture number 4)
