This week marks 'Professional Pet Sitters Week', so a big shout out to all those pet walkers, minders, boarders, and sitters that do such a fabulous job to ensure the health and happiness of our pets when their owners may be sick, on holiday or working, and for bringing them to hydrotherapy. I know there are many of you - give yourselves a shout out on this page if you'd like.

Many of the dogs we see have short or long term mobility issues and struggle to go for a nice walk.
Dogs with arthritis especially need exercise modifications and it is important they keep to a consistent duration. Even a change in terrain can create a ‘flare’ due to different muscles being utilised and the joints being stressed in a different way.

It's also really helpful to remember that the temperature of lakes, ponds and streams will not warm up until the end of the Summer. It's best not to encourage dogs into cold bodies of water as the blood vessels in their limbs will constrict leaving the tissues with less heat, pliability, and oxygen and leave them more susceptible to injury and increased pressure within the joints.
Cold water also holds more resistance than warm water making it harder to travel through.

Aqua is a sweet 7 month old whippet, she is coming to hydrotherapy to strengthen and balance her hindlimb gait, she is hoping to be a show dog when she grows up.

We haven't posted updates of Buddy for a long time, our last video was May 2nd 2022, look how far he has come
He has developed some inevitable postural changes but his mobility continues to improve even some years later 🩶

Lola is an 11yr old SBT 🩶, another devil for the sausages and a live wire which makes get photographs of her near impossible!
Lola suffered a Fibro-cartilagenous Embolism (FCE) back in 2020, this is termed a spinal stroke where a piece of disc material breaks away blocking blood supply to a region of the spinal cord. It resulted in Lola not being able to use any of her legs well. She recovered very well but more recently her back legs are becoming weak and uncoordinated again so she is in the water treadmill to improve her gait, stimulate the nerve pathways and strengthen the muscles.
Lola just comes coz she gets sausages! 🌭

This sweetie is Bella who is coming for hydrotherapy following TPLO surgery following a cranial cruciate ligament rupture in November. She is doing very well but does have a muscle deficit of 5cm so is a little weak. She is using the treadmill to ensure the muscles strengthen with the limb in correct alignment. She brings her little bucket of dinner with her, this week she dropped a few so went snorkelling to get them! 🤎

Its World Goldie Day!
So we would like to pay tribute to our lovely Poppy, Poppy is a vibrant 12yr old retriever; full of love, life and character.
Poppy comes to hydrotherapy for spinal degeneration which affects the strength and mobility in her back legs. Poppy thinks she comes for snacks, to play with all the toys and have a splash around in the water 💛
We love you Poppy 🐾

Today is 'World Greyhound Day' so we would like to introduce you to Moss. She is a very gentle lady, becomes possessed at the sight of a harness (despite not really liking to go out for walks) and loves to snuggle down on the mattress here at Forest Edge. Moss comes to hydrotherapy as she has a potential nerve issue affecting her back legs, she has increased her range of motion and we are maintaining the strength in her limbs.

Another win for the primula cheese!
Smudge is a beautiful gentle big dog and my photography does him no justice. Smudge has unfortunately been recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both hips due to hip dysplasia, he has lost a lot of muscle and has a compromised gait which is being helped in the water treadmill alongside physiotherapy from Rochelle at Vault Physiotherapy
At only 4 years old a reminder that osteoarthritis is not an old dogs ailment

New in... We've had some home care leaflets printed giving you tips on the extra things you can do to make your dogs life easier and more comfortable (and in turn yours). Although aimed at elderly dogs, dogs with arthritis and mobility issues they are also helpful for post operative care for post operative cases such as TPLO's. Ive printed a handy list on the back with websites, pages and contact details of companies and people offering services, products and support. This way you dont have to remember everything I say to you on your visits 💦
